Chris Hemsworth On The Difference Between A Solo THOR Film And An AVENGERS Ensemble

Actor Chris Hemsworth was at TIFF to promote his upcoming film Rush but fielded some Marvel Studios questions in the process. In terms of the difference between a solo Thor film and an Avengers film, Hemsworth says there's no difference..except there is.

Thor The dark World Chris Hemsworth Avengers Age of Ultron

One would think the acting demands placed on Chris Hemsworth's shoulders in his solo Thor films would be different from the load he carries on the ensemble, Avengers feature films...right? "No, it's pretty similar," counters Hemsworth. He continued, "Each time, you make the attempt - 'okay, where do we take it from here? How do we make it better? How do we not repeat what we've done? How does the character not fall into 'the hero' now and become predictable?' That's the challenge. You apply the same motivation and commitment to it each time."

Upon further thought, Hemsworth did admit it is a little different, making a solo Thor film in comparison to an Avengers movie. "The standalone Thor film is always sort of different [from] The Avengers, I think - having done a couple of them, obviously, you're not carrying it on your shoulders as the one superhero, you're with a group. Which is kind of more fun in a lot of ways because you share the responsibility but the dynamic of all those guys is vastly different from the characters on their own."

Thor: The Dark World arrives in theaters on November 8, 2013. Avengers: Age of Ultron drops May 1, 2015.

Ceejay - 9/11/2013, 11:30 AM
The difference is Iron Man, C.America, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye are not in this one?
TheFlyingGarcia - 9/11/2013, 11:32 AM
The difference that The avengers had more superheroes. No DUH you're gonna have to make it better -_-
StormLoganSummers - 9/11/2013, 11:32 AM
He's so hot!

NovaCorpsFan - 9/11/2013, 11:33 AM
This movie does look better than the last one, though.
ThePowerCosmic - 9/11/2013, 11:37 AM
Shut up Grif, Thor was great.
jerryblake - 9/11/2013, 11:37 AM
here's hope Thor 2 gonna be good. Most of the summer fantasy/sf movies didn't do it for me, this one can be a real gamechanger. Alan Taylor, more Loki ... The only thing that's bothering right now is how the fantasy/mythology aspects will be delivered in this movie. This can go from genius to stupid in no time.
TheWolverine08 - 9/11/2013, 11:38 AM
Thor 2 looks like it will be awesome!
SimyJo - 9/11/2013, 11:38 AM
Same amount of Thor't goes into a great Thor movie be it Avengers or standalone Thor movie.

Loki'n forward to both.
AFRICANNERD - 9/11/2013, 11:39 AM
Thanos is all but confirmed to make an appearance in this one
CharlesLord - 9/11/2013, 11:41 AM
wait so if his hair is short and he wearing a wig for AoU?
jerryblake - 9/11/2013, 11:41 AM
by the way, why is Malekith not white & blue ?
Is it because the tone of this movie is really dark ?
TelaVizion - 9/11/2013, 11:51 AM
I hope does lose the hand which will force them to give him a different look in Thor 3
Amazing512 - 9/11/2013, 11:52 AM
CBM of the year!
Liderc - 9/11/2013, 11:55 AM
Thor wasn't good, its comedy was waaay over the top and it made Chris and the other actors look awful. Especially his male sidekicks.

Now with Alan Taylor directing Thor 2, I think it could be much better. He's a talented director and if he can tweak Thor a bit and let the story be a bit more serious, then it could be a good film.

Comedy can be in Marvel films, clearly people enjoy it, but the first Thor was more like Dumb and Dumber with a hot Natalie Portman than anything else.
McNyagano - 9/11/2013, 11:55 AM

Because he would look really goofy in a movie -_-
You only think this would work in live action??

better than this??

Yeah I watched thor again lately and it's a solid movie. Probly 3rd or 4th best cbm from marvel IMO. Iron man, avengers, captain America = Thor, ironman 3 is probly how I rank them 1 though 5. Cap & thor i find to be very even. Thor has a really solid story and the visuals/cinematography is breathtaking... Could be best cinematography in any marvel film.

Scarlett Witch

Captain America
Iron Man
Black Widow

Does anyone think that's a fair fight? I know what Ultron and Scarlet Witch can do in the comics, but the movies never make them that powerful. Based only on what we've seen in Avengers the movie, shouldn't the A team wipe the floor with these guys. I think another villain will be announced.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 12:01 PM

Thor was fairly good, and would've been pretty great minus Darcy and with a good final battle. I think Alan will deliver on must account, we'll see.
jerryblake - 9/11/2013, 12:04 PM

you probably right ... still (i'm not familiar with Malekith character) his character seems to be very excentric. Here's hope the tone is not too dark, because it could end up being a little ... boring ?
Geotheleo - 9/11/2013, 12:09 PM
What if ultron actually was a fusion with super adaptoid? That would be almost unfair..
sanyaya - 9/11/2013, 12:14 PM
the only problem i had with thor was no alot of god figths other than that its awesome thor the dark world better be good so far PACIFIC RIM IS KILLING IT AS BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR.
JoJo1982 - 9/11/2013, 12:27 PM
Hopefully the trailers are just holding back alot of the money shots but Thor trailers look decent and doesnt bring too much excitment to me.

But this movie has a chance of being A Epic Movie(plz leave the focus away from Earth and more focus on Asgard)
thunderforce - 9/11/2013, 12:28 PM
The only thing wrong with Thor #1 was that there wasen't enough Thor since he was a mortal for most of the movie .
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 12:40 PM

what's-his-name-who-thinks-he's-so-above-cbm's, has stated that he doesn't care about returning as Red Skull. So I don't want to see him either. Cap has a good gallery of rogues that they can use in other movies.

Despite my initial skepticism, everything I've heard from the Russo brothers has been absolutely great.
tacobender - 9/11/2013, 1:00 PM
I didn't watch Thor for a long time because I thought it was gonna suck (I did the same with Green Lantern too, turned out to be right) but I was very surprised at how good it was. To me it was slightly better than Cap but for the part twos I think the new Cap movie is gonna be incredible while Dark World will be pretty good. Either way I'm gonna go see both movies and can't wait!
Ragnaroknroll - 9/11/2013, 1:00 PM
I love the first Thor and it's my second favorite MCU film thus far (after Avengers) - although Cap is a very very close 3rd.

I'm of the opinion that they made the best Thor movie they could for Phase 1. It had to:

A) introduce a potentially ridiculous premise into the same universe as Iron Man
B) introduce a lesser known and slightly bizarre character to the GA
C) do it on a budget that didn't cripple them if it did not succeed
D) not suck and ruin the momentum building up to the Avengers

It achieved all of those things and the movie was well received by critics and general moviegoers and made decent BO. It also launched the careers of two great male leads.

Would I have loved a longer film with a bigger budget? Absolutely. But I'm just glad I got a friggin' Thor movie. Marvel didn't know how audiences would respond and they took the less is more approach. They clearly have opened the purse strings on TDW so I think we're in for a treat the second go around.

As far as the comedy in Tho, I felt it was perfect and helped balance the potential absurdity of it all. Thor as a comic has always had comedy especially when the Warriors Three are involved or when Thor is the fish out of water here on Midgard.

@omega - Thanks dude! I'm glad I'm making some kind of sense.
AgentBobofHydra - 9/11/2013, 1:44 PM
I couldn't of said it better myself.
Thor, Cap, The Avengers and IH are my personal favourites (not in that order). Don't get me wrong I like the Ironman films but I do think that he is slightly overated.
Cannot wait for Thor:TDW be released next month.

You Sr. are a fool
Ragnaroknroll - 9/12/2013, 10:00 AM
@AgentBob kindred spirits brah. I like Iron Man but all of his films rank at the very bottom of the MCU list for me.
ACMilan - 9/12/2013, 12:51 PM
RnR, like you (presumably due to the Simonson allusion), I have been a lifelong Thor fan. I loved the first film, but I recognize some of the issues in it. The biggest offender was the editing and the way the film was shot. I absolutely despised the constant sideways shots of the camera. It took away from the set, the shot, and the feel of the movie.

As others have said, some of the comedy was extremely forced. What baffled me though is that the funniest and most organically funny scene was cut from the movie.

I'm really looking forward to Thor 2, that's for sure!
