Chris Hemsworth Teases "Viking Element" Of THOR: THE DARK WORLD And SWATH Sequel

Named Empire Magazine's "Man of the Year", Chris Hemsworth talks in detail here about his role in Thor: The Dark World, the pressures of starring in a box office juggernaut like Marvel's The Avengers and the possibility of returning for a Snow White and the Huntsman sequel.

It's been a VERY busy year for Chris Hemsworth as The Avengers, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Cabin in the Woods and Red Dawn have all been hit the big screen (although the latter two were actually filmed BEFORE he did Thor way back in 2010). Regardless, Empire has now named him their "Man of the Year", and in a lengthy chat with the magazine in their latest issue, the actor talked in detail about all things Asgard and even touched upon his time as as the Huntsman.

On Returning To Asgard For Thor: The Dark World:

We've known since Thor 1 that we were gonna do a Thor 2, so we've been talking about possibilities, and then once The Avengers worked, there were things where we'd go, "Cool, we can continue this and this is where we go from them with the story." It's been a long time. But you always need this period, the rehearsal prep, and we've got some good stuff down. I just saw some of the sets in the last few days and it looks incredible. There's a lot more of an organic kind of feel to Asgard now. And that Viking element of the Asgardian people, of Thor's history, is much more present.

On What Director Alan Taylor Brings To The Sequel:

It's less science fiction. I mean, if you look at Game Of Thrones, what I love about it is that it has that mythical element but you're always grounded in such an organic world. I think that's the goal scored second time round.

On How The Box Office Success Of Marvel's The Avengers Has Affected His Outlook:

You almost forget that this just doesn't happen that often. I was talking to Matt Damon and he goes to me, "So Snow White did pretty good?" and I said, "Yeah, I think it'll probably hit $400 million, but it's not Avengers numbers." And he goes, "Man!" and he shook his head. "You're fucking ruined - 400's huge!" It's like my brain thinks, "That's the norm now, that's the benchmark." Which, Jesus, I don't think anything will ever come close...Probably Avengers 2. But it will be pretty hard to hit that again. It's almost as if I've been ruined for the rest of my career regarding box office expectations.

On How To Successfully Continue Thor's Story In A Third Big Screen Outing:

In a way, it becomes more difficult at this point. Thor 1 was the origin story and he starts off as a brash child and ends as the hero; the danger then is, where does he go from here? If he doesn't change, he's gonna become boring. How do you break him down again to rebuild him and have some sort of arc, some sort of journey? Avengers was different, it was the arc of the team. So now, on [Thor 2], we've been really throwing around, "Okay, so what's Thor's big conflict here?" Because it can't just be that bad tempter again, or that he's too cocky. We've done that. And now, where does the humour lie? Because it can't be the fish-out-of-water, Crocodile Dundee kind of thing that we had in the first one. He's been to Earth now. There may be elements of that...

On What He Has Heard About A Snow White and the Huntsman Sequel:

No one had heard anything official. I haven't actually spoken to anyone from Universal about it. I guess it all depends on whether people want to see another one! I love the character. It changed a lot, and there were a lot of things we lost in the final cut. There was a bit more backstory that didn't fit in and a bit more of a relationship between them. There was just more to the character I wish we'd hung on to.

Marvel’s "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s "Thor" and "Marvel’s The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

So... why was Chris Hemsworth talking to Matt Damon exactly??
jjk2814 - 11/26/2012, 1:12 PM
Does anyone else get annoyed by excessive abbreviations? Or am I dumb and should have known what SWATH was? SWATH just sounds like it might be cool, then I find out its...Snow White...

No disrespect meant towards the use to abbreviations, they are necessary, sure...

I think if Cap was in Thor 2 it would be AWESOME. I want to see Cap and Thor in Asgard or somewhere fighting against Malekith
Bread - 11/26/2012, 1:17 PM
@batz11 sorry, but what is that?
Funsize - 11/26/2012, 1:19 PM
I hope they dont lose the science fiction element too much but the set photos are looking really good. This is still my most anticipated cbm of 2013.

batz11 cool pic but my pack will beat your vikes.
Giznad - 11/26/2012, 1:47 PM
I think Thor 2 will be more organic in the sense that the Asgardians just seemed to crap rainbows in the first one. Now, if someone craps their pants, it'll smell like real poo. Am I not a wise man? Thank you thank you. No, really, little things like the sound of the wind, real waterfalls, etc. will be the backbone here.
FirstAvenger - 11/26/2012, 1:49 PM
FirstAvenger - 11/26/2012, 1:50 PM
HalloweenJack that makes sense.
Seejay - 11/26/2012, 1:51 PM
It's less science fiction. I mean, if you look at Game Of Thrones, what I love about it is that it has that mythical element but you're always grounded in such an organic world.

Sounds truly great.
GammaVerve - 11/26/2012, 1:52 PM
Chris is Thor! It's great to know there'll be more of a Viking element to this movie!
Seejay - 11/26/2012, 1:53 PM
And that Viking element of the Asgardian people, of Thor's history, is much more present.

Also great. :)

SmellofDuty - 11/26/2012, 2:13 PM
@HalloweenJack - Never thought of Damon playing Pym… that doesn't sound bad at all.
BlackFlash - 11/26/2012, 2:20 PM
@KamenRiderJ22 - That's exactly how I feel I love GoT but don't make Thor:TDW that much like it.
calciferboheme - 11/26/2012, 2:28 PM
Thor always has to walk that fine line between SciFi and Fantasy. I have confidence that they won't stray too far either direction.

I can't wait for this movie.
neopunch - 11/26/2012, 2:40 PM
When Chris speaks of an organic feel.. he really means something like this:
