More From Idris Elba On <i>Thor</i> And His Desire To Play Blade!?

In a recent interview, the actor goes into a little more detail about working on Kenneth Branagh's Thor and according to the site also expressed his interest in playing Blade or Nick Fury...

In an interview with The Detroit News promoting his latest movie, the actor (who plays Heimdall in Thor) was asked about being a part of the movies large ensemble cast and apparently expressed his desire to play a leading character in future! Below is an excerpt from the report:

"I would like to be in the lead position, with characters around me," says Elba, mentioning Nick Fury or Blade as potential roles for him to sink his teeth into. "If that's what I'm going to do, it's better to be the kick than the sidekick."

I've thought that Elba would be a good choice to play Blade for a while now, but Nick Fury? I cant imagine that he's be eyeing up Samuel L. Jackson's role so blatantly, and although the report doesnt make it clear, it's far more likely he was probably just using that character as an example. "It's a big, big, big film," he added. "I saw the trailer and I was like, 'Damn, I'm in that movie?'"

its too bad he probably wont be able to play Blade because I am pretty sure Marvel has the rights to it seeing as there hasn't been a Blade film in production for like 6 years. If Marvel has Punisher they probably have Blade too!

I could see him as a young Nick Fury,maybe.

I could definitely see him as blade though.

i dont see him as blade. wesley snipes did a good job with played. its just too bad the 3rd one sucked but mostly cause i think jessica biel had a lot to do with it. wasnt there talk about wesley returning for blade 4 anyways? i thought i saw an interview about it

Here's my ranking for most suitable to least suitable.
Bishop, Blade, Black Panther, Falcon, Luke Cage. Obviously, since he's already a character in the Marvel cinematic universe, if he were to play another character, that character couldn't be.

@LaffaTaffa snipes bought this fun to the character, like cracking jokes n still being a badass at the same time. with Elba I cant see Blade, hes a big dude, seeing him flip around doing atrobacts n martial arts is weird, see in Thor its alright cause asgardians are brutes.

ain't got no problem him playing blade,black panther,bishop or luke cage.

black actors play black charactors.

but he shouldn't be playing heimdall,his white in the comics he should be white in the film.

white actors for white charactors.

Oh good, an article where my comments arent deleted for no reason. :P

Elba is an amazing actor and I'd be more than happy to see him play big name characters like Blade, Bishop or even Black Panther! The problem is, with him already in a Marvel Studios movie as Heimdall, would another one be a bit too much? Another studio sure, but I'm not sure about it working otherwise...

Nah it wouldn't be too much for Elba to play another hero. From the looks of the Thor trailer, his role looks minor. Plus he's becoming a big name now in hollywood, so I think he'd be perfect for movie of his own.

Also I really think Boris Kodjoe should play Luke Cage. He looks the part.

Unmasked: Long time no see mate! :D Yeah, you make a good point actually. Blade would be ideal IMO...I'd love to see Marvel Studios start work on characters like him, the Punisher and Moon Knight. Just imagine a Marvel Knights movie! Surely after 7 years, they have the rights back to Daredevil as well!? Not familiar with your Cage choice (add him and Iron Fist to movies I'd like to see!) but I'll 'Google' him now!

I wasn't a big fan of Evans as Cap because he was already the Torch. Even if it was produced by a different studio, to me, he was the visual representation of Johnny Storm. I'm sure he'll so well in the part but, it kinda irked me. So to that point, even as good of an actor as he is, now that he's Heimdall, I don't want to see Idris as any other Marvel character. There are enough actors out there to not have to tap the same ones for different roles in these CBM's.

This guy looks good for any of the roles lol. He kinda looks like Blade already, but Blade's been done three times now, move on, there are more characters that need to see the light of day like Black Panther or (I'm actually agreeing with Lee here lol) as Bishop from X-Men (which I guess doesn't make sense cause even if he got the part the movie would still suck lol).

Blade? Hmm...I don't think Marvel has the rights to it, as far as I know. But if whoever has the rights takes too long, the rights will go back to Marvel. I don't know about vampires existing in the same universe as the Avengers.

Perhaps he could be in flashback scenes in the Nick Fury movie?

He would be a great Bishop, but FOX would be making the movie and, well..

As for Cage, Nick Cage will be chasing that one. I mean, who would have imagined him chasing the Superman role? :D

I seriously doubt Marvel would cast Idris for two characters they own. It's different if its say Heimdall and a character FOX owns because they aren't in the same cinematic universe as two Marvel characters would be.

Nick Fury, Old school Blade (You know the Blade from The Tomb of Dracula comics), John Stewart and definitely War-Machine works well for me! Althought i would like to see some one like Gerard Butler or Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Nick Fury if they are going to make his origin story (I know i know thats not going to happen but i can dream of it)!

Bishop, Blade or Cage yes (I would actually watch a cage film with him in it otherwise I probably would pass, not a fan of Cage). I think he has the chops for Panther but he's too muscular. Panther's always struck me as a lithe, ninja type like Batman/ Daredevil

Yeah Boris Kodjoe was in Surrogates with Bruce Willis and he's also in the new Resident Evil Afterlife movie.
