THOR Movie Script Review: Part 1

<i>THOR</i> Movie Script Review: Part 1

SPOILER WARNING! A brief overview of the second draft of the THOR movie script I was fortunate enough to browse through a short while ago.

After being inundated with emails this morning requesting details about the THOR movie script I read, I've decided to put it here for all to see. DISCLAIMER: Keep in mind that scripts change daily, and this was not the final draft used for the film.

That being said, let's get to the good stuff...

Thor: Opening Scene

The film opens up in the best possible way; the introduction of the Nine Realms by a 'booming voice' against a black screen. Embossed words describing each of the worlds begin to appear as the camera opens on the first.

The three Norse spirits Verðandi (present), Urðr (fate) and Skuld (future) narrate the creation of the realms and how the different manner of creatures in them came to be. First, the camera flies over Muspelheim followed by Hel and Niffleheim. The first character introduced Ymir, the first of the Frost Giants and his family in the realm of Jotunheim. You then pass over the realm of the dwarves, Svartalfheim, and the elves, Nidavellir. The camera flows through Midgard (Earth) and we see man exulting Odin in his temple. Finally, the camera pans through Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge, to the the Hall of Asgard, which is filled with the Aesir. You see a glimpse of the Einherjar guard and winged Valkyries overhead, in what could only be Valhalla. Odin and Gaea are introduced while they are

. . . umm, conceiving a child. That child turns out to be Thor. Movie title appears.

The scene darkens and ends, when it opens again we are in 'present day' (centuries after the last scene). We find ourselves on the Asgardian border, where Thor (now an adult), his adoptive brother Loki, Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg and Balder (who is actually an older character, as apposed to the comics) are riding thunderously on their horses. They have been tasked on a mission to find Ivaldi, the Dwarf king of Svartalfheim. As they ride to the passageway between realms, we see a giant forge and three blacksmiths at work. They are creating the mighty Mjolnir, to present to Thor upon his arrival...

Let me tell you, the first thing that came to mind after reading these first few pages was: Lord of the Rings on steroids and meade. I literally got chills when I read the part of Ymir, in all his grotesque, Frost Giant glory, feasting on a gigantic cow. It made this movie feel REAL. In a little more than a year, this film will ACTUALLY hit theaters! As for the tone and scale of the script (if you're an avid reader of Thor comics you'll know what I mean), think of the Ages of Thunder storyline. The perfect choice, in my opinion.

If you're waiting to read what Thor does to become banished from Asgard, stay tuned for Part II.

Many thanks to Colin for showing me the goods... Wait, that didn't come out right

WolvieCBM - 4/28/2010, 12:48 PM
This is awesome! Thanks for putting this up @Multi! Can't wait to see Frost Giants on the big screen...
Growler - 4/28/2010, 12:49 PM
If this actually reaches the screen in the way described, there are going to be a lot of very happy fanboys and -girls out there.

Personally, I like the spoilers as they allow me to pre-imagine what the end product will be, and a lot of the time my limited vision is rewarded with something fantastic.

More of this, and soon, please.

And now we've seen Mjolnir we know they've at least got THAT right!
jazzman - 4/28/2010, 12:50 PM
great MultiPurposePoni cant wait for part 2
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 4/28/2010, 12:53 PM
does he stick Mjolnir up the blacksmiths ass? The dwarves could take that as an insult and so Odin must keep peace and banish Thor to make an example of him.
Thekevin - 4/28/2010, 12:57 PM
To Hell with the script man! lets see Hemsworth as the Thundergod already!
StephenStrange - 4/28/2010, 1:00 PM
OH MY GOD ... This great! better than I even suspected!

Amazing! perfect! Except for Balder being old this is pretty much exactly what I would have done. TOO AWESOME!
SalC - 4/28/2010, 1:08 PM
Sooo can't wait for this, awesome find!

@Tea you and your glow sticks, well at least you put the gerbal way ;-p
NERO - 4/28/2010, 1:13 PM
I never read Thor as a kid (or an adult for that matter) but for some reason I am excited as hell for this movie. It sounds like it will be truly epic in scale. I have to see this thing.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/28/2010, 1:15 PM
Thor's hammer is actually a piece of Chuck Norris' fossilized sh!t after he ate over ten million dinosaurs. ;)
Superheromoviefan - 4/28/2010, 1:18 PM
I think it is too supernatural.
I hope to change.
OdinsBeard - 4/28/2010, 1:20 PM

i hope this 'nine realms' thing really takes off and makes way for Thanos (if he's not wrapped up in silver surfer rights) and Beta Ray Bill. that first BRB arc would make a great movie if fleshed out more!
sagekilz - 4/28/2010, 1:23 PM
cool cool cool
THEMRTERRIFIC - 4/28/2010, 1:30 PM
Sounds Epic!

A7 - 4/28/2010, 1:38 PM
I want to roll this spoiler into a little ball and shove it into my vagina...that way everytime i feel it tickle i know we are getting closer to THOR!!!!! I think i'm most excited about this o see how they tie in the fantasy aspect into the iron man world i've become familiar with.
zippiesdrainage - 4/28/2010, 1:39 PM
I want it be relatable to the realism of Iron Man and Hulk, I don't want to see any elves dwarves or hobbits in the creation of the world intro.
HelaGood - 4/28/2010, 1:42 PM
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks, MPP!!! you rock!!!
ASSASSIN666 - 4/28/2010, 1:46 PM
Multi- Just who's payroll are you on brother? I'm going to suggest you for Mission Impossible 4.
ASSASSIN666 - 4/28/2010, 1:48 PM
A7- A spoiler ball in your vagina may just require a video for teabag to inspect.
SalC - 4/28/2010, 1:59 PM
@Kevin It's Tea, do I have to say anymore?

If you are here and haven't realized it's rampant with this type of humor, my friend, where the F&ck have you been? It's all in fun, so don't sweat it.
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/28/2010, 2:03 PM
Best Comic Book Movie... EVER!!!:)
JoshWilding - 4/28/2010, 2:06 PM
Interesting but without a better source than "Colin" I'm not buying it. I mean no offence bud and I'm not implying you've made this up, but why would you of all people get to see something that I imagine Marvel are keeping a closely guarded secret and how the hell can you remember stuff like 'Ivaldi, the Dwarf king of Svartalfheim' so well, lol? :P
goldilocks - 4/28/2010, 2:39 PM
Precursor Warning: Truly, no offense MPP but I'm skeptical as well. Marvel would shut this site down if you were leaking parts of the screenplay online. Obviously, I like the site because I'm here everyday lately and it's a great resource. I really appreciate what you guys do. But anyone who's been on here enough will tell you that not everything on here is to be taken at face value. This just falls into the if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is category. All the same, I'm interested to hear your part II. lol
Peace bro. Serious, I mean no offense. Don't take it personal.
BigbyBadWolf - 4/28/2010, 2:48 PM
I'm not a big fan of Thor, never have been. But I must admit that, if the film is handled in the same vain as LOTR, it will rock your collective socks. I have the utmost faith in Branagh to do this justice. From the description above, it sounds very, very cool.
DCMarvelFreshman - 4/28/2010, 2:53 PM
WOW, I'm so late. Awesome stuff Multi. This is a little different from the first draft. I'm glad they stuck with the beginning of show how these worlds were created.
JoshWilding - 4/28/2010, 2:54 PM
MULTI: Whoa, back up there a minute - I am in no way saying that you're a liar! (which is exactly why I started off by saying, "I mean no offence"!) I dont doubt that you saw something, I just doubt the authenticity of what you saw! If I thought you had just sat down and made all this up I'd have the balls to say so - I was simply saying that without a better source I'm not buying it! For example, just look at how "sources" revealed that Olivia Munn was to play the Wasp! I honestly hope that this is true because it sounds [frick]ing awesome but sorry if I dont just take Colin's word for it regardless of how much I know that I can trust you! :P And I forgot that you were into the Norse mythology stuff - I was just interested how you remembered it all so well!
GoGoGadgetsBruh - 4/28/2010, 2:59 PM
Multi I officially love you..........In a non gay way though xD

that's probably weird to say but hey whatever xP

loganoneil - 4/28/2010, 3:33 PM
PLEASE (pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease) don't be screwing with us! Let this be in the film!!!!!
RorMachine - 4/28/2010, 3:50 PM
Guys early drafts show up online for lots of movies, they don't tend to be too heavily guarded by the studios because they are nearly always drastically altered for the final draft. BUT, since this one wasn't readily available online I really hope that this opening scene is not changes at all because I think it sounds class. I'm not worried about this film while its in Fantasy mode, its the shift into our world that will need the most attention and care to pull off I think.
KiddSoul - 4/28/2010, 4:14 PM
@ Ror: I sure hope that shift into our world won't be watered down and will not come across like...and yes I dare say this the "Masters of the Universe" film. Please anyone don't take offense just kidding lol.! ;)

But I do have faith in Marvel's and Branagh's vision so its all good.
Joker1zero - 4/28/2010, 4:39 PM
First we get the hammer and now this?! [frick]in A man!
RedDevil - 4/28/2010, 4:46 PM

flames809 - 4/28/2010, 5:20 PM

Heimdall10 - 4/28/2010, 5:45 PM
This sounds utterly amazing. 'Just had a geekgasm.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/28/2010, 6:56 PM
The real reason why Loki and Thor hate each other. :)
