UPDATE: THOR Sequel Slated For 2013; Kenneth Branagh NOT Returning To Direct!

UPDATE: THOR Sequel Slated For 2013; Kenneth Branagh NOT Returning To Direct!

Recent reports reveal that Marvel and Disney are not only moving forward with a sequel to their praised-THOR film, but doing so without it's original director, Kenneth Branagh!

It's been almost two months since Marvel & Kenneth Branagh's praised-THOR movie hit theaters, grossing $437 million worldwide. And with the Marvel Studios' president of production, Kevin Fiege, revealing last month that a sequel had only been discussed, Deadline has surprisingly revealed it's intended release, but that's not all they've revealed. It seems Iron Man 3 won't be the only 2013 sequel with a new director.

Marvel Studios is making a full commitment to Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title hero. Marvel will need to hire a director for that film because, I've learned, Kenneth Branagh won't be returning as helmer. His exit was "mutual and amicable," I'm told. That means a big job is out there that a lot of directors and their agents will be chasing over the upcoming holiday. Disney will today finalize a release date for Thor 2, which will be released sometime in the summer, 2013. Variety reports it'll release July 26!

The site further states that Branagh will most likely be involved in some "producing capacity." Regarding who the God Of Thunder will face off with this time around, there were more rumors last month suggesting that The Enchantress and The Executioner were in contention. What do you think?

Anyhow, with Iron Man 3 slated for May 3, The Avengers releases May 4, next year!

Too bad Branagh's leaving, he did a great job with the first film.

Checkmate - 6/30/2011, 2:01 PM
Iron Man & Thor in the same summer, awesome!
Can't wait to see what happens, and I hope it turns out good without Branagh, maybe we can get a little Beta Ray Bill cameo going on.

StrangerX - 6/30/2011, 2:16 PM
Kinda disappointed that Kens not coming back, but def glad a sequel is in the works. Hope they keep the same cast Loved idris Elba we do need to see Hela and Amora tho
ISleepNow - 6/30/2011, 2:19 PM
MARVEL sure knows how to keep their directors..
Too bad Peter Jackson's busy right now. Maybe they can hit him up for Thor 3 in a few years..
If Darren Aronofsky is smart he'll hold out until 2012 so that he can take over the Batman franchise when Nolan departs.
kevberg - 6/30/2011, 2:19 PM
Aww man....Branaugh balanced the Humor and seriousness really well...It was great movie. I guess they weren't happy with the bank but i personally, and surprisingly loved this film more than I thought I would.
cashsteele - 6/30/2011, 2:20 PM
This is good news(except for Branaugh) but probably isn't set in stone if, what if Cap is critically acclaimed and does better at the boxoffice than Thor, they might switch it up and put Cap with IM3 and move Thor back to May 2014, similar to when they pushed Thor and Cap back a year...
jazzman - 6/30/2011, 2:21 PM

Frick Aronofsky. Danny Boyle for Thor 2

gambgel - 6/30/2011, 2:26 PM
Jon Favreau left.
Kenneth left...

what's happening with Marvel??
Rivehn - 6/30/2011, 2:27 PM
Good to hear maybe i wont fall asleep this time.
revloveR - 6/30/2011, 2:29 PM
not all that worried. not saying thor sucked, but i was expecting a little more action.
WellDrawn - 6/30/2011, 2:29 PM
Branah should stay, just fire the cinematographer. That movie had more Dutch angles than a Terry Gilliam flick.
marvel72 - 6/30/2011, 2:29 PM
shame branagh is not returning they should try & get jj abrams to direct.

thor 2 & iron man 3 in 2013 bring it on.
Ryguy88 - 6/30/2011, 2:30 PM
Now lets just hope that the sequel has more at stake in the finale than 5 immortals and a desserted town in the middle of nowhere.
GodzillaKart - 6/30/2011, 2:31 PM
Kinda expected Branagh to leave. Not his style to get tied to a franchise. Hope they find someone good. Outside of the truly stupid portrayal of the warriors three, Thor was awesome.
Wildaniel - 6/30/2011, 2:35 PM
Amora The Enchantress!!!
SCOURGE - 6/30/2011, 2:35 PM
This is great news! Now, recast Jane Foster and some of the major problems with the first one will be solved!
write33 - 6/30/2011, 2:36 PM
hate to say it but i am pleased by this news.

i enjoyed Thor, but the action and the depth of scope weren't what they needed to be. plus the characters (hi Warriors 3) weren't introduced and given nearly enough valuable time. After seeing Xmen First Class it's clear that you CAN balance character and story in an ensemble superhero film.

nice job on Part One but bring on change for Part Two!...Peter Jackson!........ok won't happen.
Nitrogenb - 6/30/2011, 2:37 PM
I might be alone in this, but Thor was ok. It wasn't great and it was a little better than average. I'd give it a 7/10, maybe 7.5/10. It seemed like it wanted to go further and harder than it did, but it almost felt like it was holding itself back. I think another director is a good decision, depending on who it is.
marvel72 - 6/30/2011, 2:38 PM
@ blacklanternfroggy

thor has a great cast of villains.

-ullik the troll
-seth the serpent god
-high evolutionary
-the absorbing man
-the wrecking crew

heroes to introduce

-balder the brave
-beta ray bill
cashsteele - 6/30/2011, 2:38 PM
They'll probably release it at end of July like the 19th or 26th 2013...
Ryguy88 - 6/30/2011, 2:40 PM
I think that if Boyle or Aronofsky were to direct a CBM it would be about a character with a little more depth and groundedness. Thor is cool but both those guys' talents would not be put to full use in a Thor movie. No offence to Branagh but he isn't Aronofsky or Boyle.
80sFace - 6/30/2011, 2:40 PM
Mixed feelings. KB did a decent job - too many dutch angles and forced at times, but a solid B+. New blood could be good - Duncan Jones, Mark Romanek, even (gulp) ben Affleck..?

As for the "foe" - maybe the Enchantress. But Beta Ray Bill should be in there...
AUTISTICSPIDER - 6/30/2011, 2:40 PM
Christopher Nolan!!! Oh and for Iron Man 3 how about Christopher Nolan!!! [frick] it, lets just fire all the other directors and hire... wait for it... Christopher Nolan!!! Cause it seems like everything he shits out turns to gold...
nuclearpriest - 6/30/2011, 2:44 PM
whoever they get to replace Kenneth Branagh, let's just hope it's not Martin Campbell.
DEFENDER - 6/30/2011, 2:44 PM
i hope he keeps his helmet on for the entire movie and especially for all the battle scenes in the sequel.
BIGBMH - 6/30/2011, 2:44 PM
Before you all jump to the conclusion that the movie will suck, let me remind you that we don't know who will replace Branagh. It's a shame that he's leaving but that doesn't mean the movie is doomed without him. He layed a solid foundation.
jazzman - 6/30/2011, 2:45 PM

nah man, Aronofsky is only good for picking up dog crap LOL
95 - 6/30/2011, 2:48 PM
Is Marvel/Disney tight with spending money on their talent {i.e. Directors}?

I don't really care if Kenneth left, I didn't like his work in Thor. The slow motion and cheesy angles, tsk tsk. Got high hopes for the sequel though, one reason: they have less pressure to set up The Avengers.

Peter Jackson for Thor 2! {I wish}

Cerebro - 6/30/2011, 2:48 PM
I know i will get shit for this but Deltoro.
RobJigga - 6/30/2011, 2:49 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO come on disney/marvel dont do this. With john leavuing iron man 3 im worried about that series, and now no kenneth on thor?? This isnt good news.Someone save thor.
95 - 6/30/2011, 2:56 PM

Actually, he'd be a good choice.
