Why I Think A Prequel Would Have Been Better Suited For TRANSFORMERS 4

Ugh...another Transformers movie with a new set of pesky humans to get in the way. Read on to see the reasons why a sans human Transformers movie would have been so much better. Leave your comments in the usual place and enjoy!

I just want to briefly preface this by saying that I only know Transformers from the movies and what I can recollect from the cartoon and toys I owned when I was a kid. Lest any fanboys think I am attempting to pass myself off as one, I am not. This is merely my opinion as a moviegoer.

As we all know, a few days ago we got the official title for the newest Transformers adventure. Transformers: Age of Extinction. Once again directed by Michael Bay and once again promising to incorporate new robots (Dinobots) and bring back fan favorites (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and – and this is only a rumor – Megatron/Galvatron). Surprise, surprise…

I think I am like most people in that I loved the first Transformers, detested the second one, and was satisfied with the third. That being said, I think that they should have taken the franchise in a different direction. Something which they could have done by making a prequel fully set in Cybertron (i.e. no humans). I happen to think (and I may be the only one) that the short sequence in Dark of The Moon detailing the attempted escape of The Arc during the waning days of the war in Cybertron was one that left the idea of a Transformers only prequel as a real possibility. A film (or films) showing what led to the war in Cybertron, how battle lines were drawn, and the rise to power of both Megatron and Optimus would be a million times more interesting than once again going through the motions of humans reacting in amazement to these giant metal spacemen while pursuing their own vapid storylines involving their love interest du jour and their moral conundrums about participating in a conflict that is not theirs. Am I right?

It should go without saying that the Transformers are the stars of these films and the humans are merely interchangeable role players in their battles for whatever macguffin they are vying for (The Allspark, The Matrix of Leadership, or The Space Bridge). Hence, the complete absence of Sam Witwicky in this new film and the ease in which the roles of Mikaela and Carly were swapped in Dark of The Moon.

Seeing as how movies are there to ultimately entertain us, I must say I enjoy watching Transformers movies. I go into the theater fully expecting to shut off my brain for a couple of hours and marvel at (as my ex-girlfriend so eloquently described) “two giant robots beating each other up” and at the end of the day isn’t that what we all want from our Transformers?

I hated 1 & 2, and I didn't even see 3. But I would love a movie about the War and Fall of Cybertron.
anthonyEstark - 9/6/2013, 10:20 AM
And just saying, the cartoons were much better than the movies.
anthonyEstark - 9/6/2013, 10:44 AM
@ManofReal No, send Michael Bay out now and get someone else who knows how to do it.
Tainted87 - 9/6/2013, 11:18 AM
There's a very important reason why a prequel would have been preferable, and surprisingly, it's not in this article.

ALL THE DECEPTICONS ARE DEAD.

Now there's a possibility that there might be some 'cons floating out there, not on Cybertron, not on Earth, but it's not the gang. No Megatron, ok - there's Starcream. No Starscream, well, I guess there's still Soundwave. No Soundwave? GTFO.
OliverKlossof - 9/6/2013, 11:24 AM
@Tainted87 - I can't believe that didn't occur to me! Thanks for bringing it up. You are 100% spot on. Then again, with Michael "Forget canon and any established timeline" Bay at the helm, I'm sure they will figure out some lame way to bring them all back. We need a prequel!!
FOOM - 9/6/2013, 1:53 PM
Transformers since its inception was a piss poor rip off of all the anime mecha that was done in Japan a decade before anyone even thought of Optimus Prime. It is, and always has been, absolute garbage.
KamenRiderJ - 9/6/2013, 2:11 PM
Finally someone else that gets it! It burns me up that they are wasting Kelsy Grammer on shit character that we don't give a shit about, when he could have been a mainstay by voicing Perceptor.

It's like this franchise has forgotten who the star of the show should be. Bringing in talent to voice the robots would be much better then adding humans we don't care about. For god sake bring back Judd Nelson to voice Hot Rod (an epic move that would be right). Shoot, I could have seen Mark Wahlberg voicing an Autobot or Decepticon.

I know we are a long way off from it happening, but I truly hope someone could come and snatch this franchise from Bay's slimy fingers. That way we could get the war on Cybertron that we should have gotten long ago.

They all ready made a prequel to the movies with graphic novels.
WYLEEJAY - 9/6/2013, 6:57 PM
Yeah but the graphic novels didn't do the three movies any justice. They just introduced characters to kill them off before the next movie. My son loves these factors films. I'm a huge Transformers fan myself, but the movies were a little annoying with too much human drama. I thoight it was supposed to be humans getting caught up in the Cybertronians war. Not Cybertronians getting caught up in high school drama.

I was writing my own prequel for my son. I figured out a clever way to tell the story from Megatrons and Optimus perspective. The story would of started off with them as partners. On a mission. They would both be the same rank, under Sentinel primes command. Megatron would always feel a little jealousy over the fact that Optimus was named a Prime when he emerged from the well of Allsparks, destined to take Sentinels place. While Megatron had to fight for his position, sometimes making decisions that other bots wouldn't make to achieve his goals. On this mission Megatron would get separated from Optimus, and find something that would forever alter his relationship with not just Optimus, but all of Cybertron. Optimus Prime will have to step up, take command of his allies and show Sentinel that he's ready to lead the Cybertronians as a true Prime. The war between the Autobots and Decepticons begins with deception and betrayal.

K, so from there the story would go on to introduce everyone's favorite key players from all three films. One thing I managed to do was take elements from all three plots of all three films, and work them together in the prequel. You know how it seems so coincidental that each movie seems to have a plot in place that feels like it was planned out? Like the Transformers had actually been on Earth a while. Well from freeing Megatron and retrieving the Cube from the first film, killing off Prime to free The Fallen to find the Matrix in the second one, to tricking the Autobots into reviving Sentinel and him trying to bring Cybertron near Earth with the Space Bridge. I found a way for it all to fit together nicely. Even the great coincidence of Sentinel Primes ship crash landing on Earth has meaning and is explained. The only problem, I was getting my shit together, and then they announced a fourth film. I'm afraid that film will retcon all the hard work I would put into my story. Basically I thought I came up with a story that would make for an excellent prequel, animated film at least. Or better graphic novel. But part four could ruin it. Or my writing will do that itself cause I'm not that awesome.
WYLEEJAY - 9/6/2013, 7:29 PM
And I'm sorry about those typos, I'm on my phone so don't judge my writing ability based on that please.
TicklerMan - 9/6/2013, 7:30 PM
Blah blah blah...,you all complain yet yah still go see it 20X on 3DIMAX, buy the special edition 3D Box Set, order it on ppv, rent it on Redbox and never return it, order HBO to see it, DVR it on TNT only to say it sucks and how much Micheal Bay raped your childhood.

The f----- up thing is I'm stating FACTS!!!!!
KingNTheKong - 9/6/2013, 7:42 PM
So you're asking for an animated movie. You realized it would just be very high quality 3D animation. The whole movie would be CGI. Might as well do a tv show
KamenRiderJ - 9/6/2013, 8:02 PM
TicklerMan, what you just stated is an opinion. There is no fact that I will pay for this crap. I haven't paid anything to see a Transformers movie since the first one. You make yourself look silly coming to this thread making a statement like that.

He hasn't raped anyone's childhood per say, but he has raped the characters in which I watched and read about for so many years. If you don't have respect for the source that's fine, but there are those of us that do more then just watch television.

If you wanna go see the movies fine, but don't come in here with your off the wall BS.

@RedHood13: You do realize that Pixar movies are all CGI correct? What would be the difference in creating something more hardcore in an all digital style such as those films?
ALF9001 - 9/6/2013, 8:56 PM
@Wyleejay
That sounds interesting, keep going
WYLEEJAY - 9/6/2013, 10:04 PM
Well you see, there needs to be a good reason Megatron would decide to challenge Sentinel Primes leadership. If you take the caste system like they did in the War for Cybertron books, and with the Well of Allsparks naming the Primes as their created. You have a lot of motivation for a character that wasn't special when he was created. Megatron might have been called something else when he emerged from the Well. But that wasn't enough. He had to make himself better. And he did. He changed his name, and rose through the ranks of the military. He had a camaraderie with Optimus. Even though he despised him. Cause no matter how hard Megatron strived to become better, Sentinel would always favor Optimus. Cause he was named Prime by the Allspark. Megatron would continue to challenge the elders on the caste system. But to no avail. Sentinel himself could see the flaws, Megatron was a great warrior, and he was willing to do whatever was necessary to get the job done, but who is he to challenge the will of the Dynasty of Primes through the Allspark. He could see Optimus' weakness, he cared too much for the little things, life in general was too precious to him. In short, Sentinel wasn't all that confident that Optimus could make the decisions he would have to. Sentinel knew he had to do whatever he could to prepare Optimus for the challenges ahead.
WYLEEJAY - 9/6/2013, 10:14 PM
A true hero, needs a true villain. And the best kinds of villains, have the greatest motivations. Jealousy, overconfidence, and an ideal should be enough to turn Megatron into the villain the story needs. We know how their relationship ends. Optimus showing Sentinel that he CAN make those hard decisions. And the end of Optimus' and Megatrons long feud. but where it all began is the story everyone wants. And instead we are getting a part four. With more human drama with bots in the background. Yeah I haven't seen it yet. But a story like this in some other form would please their fans.
Genaro - 9/6/2013, 10:56 PM
Without humans it wouldn't be live action. Unless they were to got to cybertron, but cybertron is gone.
KamenRiderJ - 9/7/2013, 12:08 AM
@Genaro: Play the game bro...it's set's the humans up perfectly if they wanted to go that way.

The first film has to make us care about the Autobots plight. As it is now I don't care why they are on Earth. These films have you as about emotionally invested in the characters as you would be to a stone.

That has been the opposing parties complaint the whole time about Bay's creation, but I guess people can't hear us over the sound of...

Yea...explosions.

=^/
MightyZeus - 9/7/2013, 4:21 AM
Just change the director, then we can get that prequel or that War on Cybertron.

I really hated the second. I swear it was one of the worst sequels i've seen to a film.
TicklerMan - 9/7/2013, 7:10 AM
@Francishates. If you hate it, why watch it. Even if for free. Seriously, why even comment. Take me for example. I loved watching GI JOE cartoons. I was pumped. But After watching the first 15 minutes of the 1st movie, I walked out. Never bothered to finish seeing it (for free) or the sequel and the inevitable 3rd film. I don't even acknowledge the articles posted on here.

But what's sooooo stupid is yah hate this franchise soooo much yet yah still watch these movies, even if you dont pay a dime. It's psychotic.
JediPhilosopher - 9/7/2013, 7:21 AM
Reboot this mess! And then, like I keep saying, get the characters right.
KamenRiderJ - 9/7/2013, 11:34 AM
Why comment? Read the title of this article...I should be asking you that question.

This article was written in order for us to vent...what's wrong, can't stand opposing opinions?

Sad...

Who said we watch them? Again, I think you believe you are Professor X or some shit and you think you can look into the hearts and minds of others (you can't by the way). You will watch this mess...don't try putting us in that sinking ass boat you are in.

You say we shouldn't talk about what we desire from a reboot, but I say it's a free country and we will do as we please.
TicklerMan - 9/7/2013, 1:58 PM
"Who said we watch them?"

Wait...wait....wait, WHAT!?!?!

Soooo......if you haven't watched them, then what the hell are you venting about?????
KamenRiderJ - 9/7/2013, 2:02 PM
TicklerMan, how bout you give it the hell up? I have heard about or seen bits and pieces of the others. I'm a black guy...you think I watched a movie with two robots that are nothing more then racist ass stereotypes?

You are a piece of crap, now stop addressing me...talking to you is going no where.
TicklerMan - 9/7/2013, 2:49 PM
The guy has not even seen the movies he is bashing. Only referencing what others told him. Holy s--- balls!! A fan boy plaugerizing his bashing. Now I've seen it ALL on CBM!! And he wait racial too!!!!!

FYI, you address me at first buddy. But please keep going!!! Don't Stop!!!
