Sony Has CG-Animated/Live-Action SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Film In The Works

We're already getting a Power Rangers film and now another childhood hero is set to be resurrected on the big screen. It has been announced that Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog is in the early stages of development over at Sony Pictures. Come check it out!

Sony Pictures and Neal H. Moritz, producer of the Fast & Furious franchise, are set to bring another high speed franchise to life: Sonic the Hedgehog! The studio will team up with the CG animation film-production company Marza Animation Planet and a division of the Sega Sammy Group to develop a hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature film featuring the speedy hedgehog. Evan Susser & Van Robichaux have been tapped to write the script which will follow the escapades of Sonic & his friends and is also expected to feature the notorious Dr. Eggman.

The billion dollar video game franchise has been one of the world's biggest gaming phenomena for over two decades with over 140 million games sold. The franchise has also expanded over to comics, a television series, merchandise, and more.

Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella had this to say about the announcement: "There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base, along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."

Marza CEO added: "Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we're thrilled that he's now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we're confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."

Invictor - 6/10/2014, 4:31 PM
Hmmmm, I don't know. This better not end up like Dragonball: Evolution.
DarthCMPunk - 6/10/2014, 4:31 PM

I really hope that they do the story from Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2 and not some corny story like the ones that followed after
LeonardTheWise - 6/10/2014, 4:33 PM
This would wrok if it was only Cgi, but a mix mash of live action? Uhhh :L I'll give it a shot...
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 6/10/2014, 4:34 PM
Live action? Oh God. I smell a stink bomb
SuperDude001 - 6/10/2014, 4:34 PM
yonny616 @ but whatever happened to those Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper movies? I haven't seen anything from them since announcement...

This could be great, but it's Sony so will suck. Tbh...I think Marvel Studios would be best at it. If they made it their first non-marvel/MCU film, it could be great. Other companies...they don't have the right magic...
LeonardTheWise - 6/10/2014, 4:34 PM
work* Also, we better have the ''Rolling around at the speed of sound'' song in there!
GenerationX - 6/10/2014, 4:34 PM
limitless stories means they will make a trilogy and stop

Wait a minute "Cgi/live-action" So what is Eggman going to be played by an actor?. Please just make this movie entirely cg because we don't want another smurfs
AgentZero - 6/10/2014, 4:37 PM
Oh yeahhhhhhhhh
SuperDude001 - 6/10/2014, 4:39 PM
I imagine they'll get some desperate only-in-it-for-the-money actor for Eggman like Bruce Willis, Paul Giamatti, or Ben Kingsley...
Invictor - 6/10/2014, 4:39 PM
Could you all stop comparing live action/cgi to the damn Smurfs? Hey, newsflash, did you know that The Avengers, Transformers, Avatar, and Ted used CGI for their films? Mind blown, right?!

Well if it's anything like the current generation of games then it's gonna suck hard.

pesmerga44 - 6/10/2014, 4:47 PM

Oh ya if they made an all CG-animation movie of that show I would definitely see it because that show was awesome.
MrChuff - 6/10/2014, 4:49 PM

maninfinesuit - 6/10/2014, 4:49 PM

GhostRider1991 - 6/10/2014, 5:05 PM
Sound cool, Sonic was a part of my childhood, I grew up with video games and the cartoons. Finally we get a Sonic movie, if this going to work they need to use motion capture to make him more realistic.
Mrcool210 - 6/10/2014, 5:06 PM
it out to be better then this trash.

micvalpro - 6/10/2014, 5:06 PM
It's sony though... Smurfs, spiderman... Ugh
pesmerga44 - 6/10/2014, 5:08 PM

And it didn't work for the majority of other movies that tried this. For ever Who Framed Roger Rabbit you have Smurfs, Yogi Bear, Alvin and the Chipmunks, etc... kid movies where CGI characters deal with real people for the most park SUCK. Also as some people have said they want Dr. Eggman to be a real person I ask why his body is in no way natural and would look weird if you made it a real person. Whoever plays the part will look out of place as Dr. Eggman being to skinny or will look far to silly in a fat suit.

pesmerga Didn't work based off of what exactly? I don't think they were trying to win Academy Awards with those films so I'd only expect so much as far acting. Considering the target audience, I think they would be the best judge as to whether or not they "sucked" or not. I've never seen them but my 7yo loved most of those movies. Considering the fact that Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and, Scooby Doo all spawned sequels, I'm assuming they were financially successful. So, what are we judging by: an adult's opinion of a children's movie or Rotten Tomatoes scores?
