UPDATE: Eric Singer To Pen Ubisoft's Big Screen Adaptation Of SPLINTER CELL; Tom Hardy To Star

UPDATE: Eric Singer To Pen Ubisoft's Big Screen Adaptation Of SPLINTER CELL; Tom Hardy To Star

As well as Assassin's Creed (which already has X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender attached to star), Ubisoft are bringing another of their most popular franchises to the big screen with Splinter Cell. Well, a writer has now been tracked down! Hit the jump for more.

Collider reports that Eric Singer has been hired by Ubisoft to write the screenplay for their planned big screen adaptation of Splinter Cell. This is the first solid bit of news we've heard about the film since it was revealed that Paramount and Warner Bros. were both battling it out for the movie rights to the popular video game spy franchise (based on the Tom Clancy novels). That's all we know right now, although this is a good indication that work will begin moving on the film at a much quicker pace. Singer is best known for penning The International; a thriller which was directed by Tom Tykwer and starred Clive Owen. Be sure to stay tuned for further updates!

UPDATE: Variety has now confirmed that The Dark Knight Rises' Tom Hardy has signed up to play 'Sam Fisher' in the movie. Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, released the following statement: "Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell' movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and ... we're confident he'll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story ... while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans." With Michael Fassbender in Assassin's Creed and Tom Hardy in Splinter Cell, Ubisoft are clearly taking their adaptations VERY seriously.

Oh, okay..
justified1 - 11/14/2012, 11:49 AM
Hope they do it justice.

I love the games.
BRUHHHHHHHHHH - 11/14/2012, 12:00 PM
The first games, were cool. Reminded me of Syphon Filter.

Conviction blew my mind, Im still addicted to it, Michael Ironside (Who does the voice for Sam in the game) should play some sort of cameo, absolutely anybody BUT Sam Jackson as Lambert, and or Henry Cavill as Sam Fisher.

I think this and Zelda are the two video games that could successfully transfer to the big screen with the most ease.

Eric Singer, the drummer of kiss????? :)
CaptainAmerica31 - 11/14/2012, 12:20 PM
@fesstic lol I know right?
jondoe297 - 11/14/2012, 12:40 PM
This game might be able to make a good movie
toco89 - 11/14/2012, 12:50 PM
I misread and thought Clive Owen was playing the lead. That would be cool though.
fullmoon106 - 11/14/2012, 12:50 PM
Could be interresting. The franchise has potential and The International was a good movie.
TheFox - 11/14/2012, 12:57 PM

I remember getting excited back when I first bought Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory because they included a teaser trailer for a movie, and then nothing happened for years. I want to see this movie, dammit!

jimpinto24 - 11/14/2012, 1:10 PM
Great casting! Tom Hardy is a talented actor.
charlie2094 - 11/14/2012, 1:15 PM
Brilliant! Really happy to see Ubisoft really are moving ahead with adaptations to their games. Hear so many times of people planning to do it, but it never happens. Assassin's Creed is one of my favourite game franchises and is off to a great start with Fassbender attached, now Splinter Cell (another great series) has Tom Hardy.

Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out over the next few years!
Kevinwillpeabodyproperties - 11/14/2012, 1:24 PM
Well they r definitely hiring great actors. Solid

Fassbender and hardy r really damn good. Can't decide who I prefer honestly
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/14/2012, 1:26 PM
Tom Hardy?O_O... Well he is great actor and if they are focusing on Fisher´s younger days i could see him doing fine in the role.
toco89 - 11/14/2012, 1:27 PM
Hardy is a good actor. But there were better suited choices. He does have the hot hand I guess. I'm expecting his best as a lead.
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/14/2012, 1:27 PM
Aaron Eckhart would have been cool thou.
mk - 11/14/2012, 1:40 PM
eh.. i know hardy is good but i dont really sam fisher on him
Hellsing - 11/14/2012, 1:47 PM
[frick]ing hell Ubisoft are going all out, Fassbender and Hardy. Let me guess there gonna get JGL for watch dogs or something. Hardy is an amazing actor, despite his silly voice he was awesome actor just watch Bronson. But I can't see him as Fisher but what ever I will totally give the guy benefit of the doubt.
Hellsing - 11/14/2012, 1:47 PM
and I guess that kinda explains why WB went for Skargard for Tarzan instead of Hardy
Nubase - 11/14/2012, 2:09 PM
Video game movies will be the next big thing now, hollywood are not pretending don't know how big the gaming industry is cos its huge, just look at the chaos the new call of duty game black ops 2 is causing and along with creed and everything else.

But for ubisoft to secure the likes of fassbender and hardy who are at the moment 2 of the most sought after actors in hollywood is a big coup no doubt.

And also there a unchartered , metal gear solid and possibly a halo movie.
BlueDemon - 11/14/2012, 2:12 PM
This is some good [frick]ing casting!
Rowsdower - 11/14/2012, 2:13 PM
Hardy seems like a kinda random choice.
polarkyle - 11/14/2012, 2:13 PM
Damn it. We need tom hardy for kratos in God of war not fisher
sexfoodcomics - 11/14/2012, 2:14 PM
Hmmm Ubisoft can be pulling a marvel here. They can be the first to make a video game movie that people take serios with assassins creed and splinter cell. They better be careful, Disney will buy them soon.
IcemanX - 11/14/2012, 2:21 PM
ubisoft will be the marvel of video game movies ;)
VanCityKid - 11/14/2012, 2:29 PM
What in the flying [frick]?!

Seems like Ubisoft is basing Sam Fisher on his younger Blacklist incarnation than his older gruffer Chaos Theory, Pandora Tomorrow incarnation with this casting.

Don't get me wrong Fassbender and Hardy are good actors but I feel like they would be better suited in the others roles, ie. Fassbender as Fisher and Hardy for Desmond/Altair.
Zell9 - 11/14/2012, 2:31 PM
lets me just go ahead and say

"Follow Him"
mctrinket - 11/14/2012, 2:34 PM
I always thought George Clooney would be the perfect Sam Fisher, but this is not a bad alternative.
Spectre94 - 11/14/2012, 2:50 PM
Sorry, can't read this. Too much WIN to comprehend
Asterisk - 11/14/2012, 3:06 PM
VERY interesting! I LOVE Splinter Cell and Tom Hardy!

prototype87 - 11/14/2012, 3:20 PM

ManOfKrypton - 11/14/2012, 3:57 PM
Hmmm not sure about Tom Hardy as Sam Fisher - However I love Hardy, so i'll give this a chance.

Theatricality and deception are powerful agents to the uninitiated... but we are initiated, aren't we Lambert? Members of the League of Fourth Echlon!
Pontius888 - 11/14/2012, 5:28 PM
Hardy as Fisher, Hell Yeah!!!!
SmellofDuty - 11/14/2012, 6:32 PM
This is great! I'm a huge Tom Hardy fan! And Tom Clancy is great, I would prefer a Rainbow Six Vegas movie just because I've played the games.
Shadowelfz - 11/14/2012, 8:35 PM
mgeoff88 - 11/14/2012, 9:02 PM
I'm excited they are moving forward with this! I really hope they also have a Rainbow Six movie in the works.

Tom Hardy is an incredible actor, but I'm not sure I see him as Sam Fisher.
Gulon180 - 11/14/2012, 9:25 PM
whats the name of this site again????
Nighmarewalking117 - 11/14/2012, 10:57 PM
Rainbow Six was cool. I enjoyed them both and that would be a cool idea @Mgeooff88, but I can't see hardy as: Fisher, I'm not even sure about his younger-days earlier? That and Assassin's Creed is cool and i enjoyed all the games, but I can't see who they chose as the actor working-out for: Altair.
Jolt17 - 11/15/2012, 3:54 AM
Hmm, I'd actually love to see him as Kratos in a God of War movie...but it's cool, I guess. Love him as an actor, especially in Warrior. (Although I still think that with the same savagery displayed in that movie, he can nail Kratos easily.)

The thing is there are loads of other actors who can nail Sam Fisher too - Aaron Eckhart is a good one there - but it's not the same for Kratos, and not letting Hardy get that role would be quite a waste. But, well...the God of War movie may not be made at all, and if it does one day, who knows if they can get Hardy too?

OK, back to the topic. I'm glad to hear this - I've always loved Splinter Cell since a few years ago, although I can't catch up with many video games lately. Hardy is, once again, certainly a good thing for the movie, so we'll see how the rest turn out.
