Joss Whedon Discusses WONDER WOMAN; & Will ITEM 47 Stars Be In His S.H.I.E.L.D. Show?

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Joss Whedon was promoting his new Shakespearean take on Much Ado About Nothing and he chatted with Crave Online about Wonder Woman and his upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

In 2003 Joss Whedon had signed on to write and direct a live-action film for Wonder Woman. Warner Bros. of course didn't see eye-to-eye with Whedon's vision, which centered around the Amazonian Princess learning about humanity from an outsider's perspective. I'm assuming after The Avengers smashed box office records left and right that WB is kicking themselves for letting Whedon's talents go elsewhere. Since then WB teamed-up with David E. Kelley for an ill-fated Wonder Woman television series, and even more recently CW has expressed interest in making their own television series for Diana Prince.
They’re still trying to do Wonder Woman. Even David E. Kelley couldn’t get it aired on TV. Why don’t they know how to do that character?

I don’t think that was a match. I just don’t. I don’t think that he needs to write about superheroes. You need to need to write about superheroes to write about superheroes. If that’s not in your vernacular, you may bring something new and interesting to it, but at the end of the day, if you don’t have that burning desire to talk about these people who have these insane powers, then some other agenda is going to come forward and you might accidentally turn off the dark.

As for the new S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, Whedon has promised a new cast of characters, but some have been curious if Lizzy Kaplan and Jesse Bradford might find their way onto the show. The two star in the Marvel short film, Item 47, which accompanies the September 25 Blu-ray release of The Avengers.
We’re excited you’re doing another television series, let alone “S.H.I.E.L.D.” Will there be room for Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford on “S.H.I.E.L.D.” after they were in Item 47?

I honestly do not think they are available because I think she is on another show. We’re building it with a new group of people. They were great and that had a lot to do with why we are making the show, but we are starting fresh.

Good work as usual Nails!

Look...just because Avengers was a success doesn't necessary mean he would have rocked WW. Do any of us know what his plan was? For all we know the movie could have bomb and he might have never gotten Avengers so let's relax on dissing WB/DC.
Angelus - 9/13/2012, 12:46 PM
What WB needs to do:
Marqy - 9/13/2012, 12:46 PM
Loki : " its rapin time"
blueorangeny - 9/13/2012, 12:47 PM
@ Levitikiz - You comment doesn't make sense. How did you translate what the article says with that lol.

Don't you realize that WB/DC did have a JL planned way before Avengers but shit never went through due to business reasons. Shit happens. WB/DC isn't stupid, they know what they have and will get it out there.
NOID - 9/13/2012, 12:50 PM
I'll say this over and over until i'm dead.... WB has no idea what the F*ck to do with DC's superheros.... no clue...
jimpinto24 - 9/13/2012, 12:51 PM
I agree with Joss Whedon. I think a lot of screen writers or directors don't want to take the time to dig in deep to the WW character. I believe that's he reason why the WW movie can't get off the ground. Any director that wants to work on a WW movie must take the time to gig deep into her origins. And I agree wit Froggy, WB needs to let DC handle the comic book movies.
SupLezz - 9/13/2012, 12:53 PM
"...but at the end of the day, if you don’t have that burning desire to talk about these people..." + then you should probably stay the [frick] away from the subject. so true
GirlyGeek - 9/13/2012, 1:04 PM
That Loki gif kills me.
ATrueHero1987 - 9/13/2012, 1:08 PM
lol @ the Loki gif!
ATrueHero1987 - 9/13/2012, 1:10 PM
I wonder woman, are you my Wonder Woman?!

billytwohats - 9/13/2012, 1:17 PM
Wonder Woman is just far too cheesy a character, she belongs in that 70's TV series. She needs redesigning from the ground up. Get rid of that ridiculous truth lasso for starters.
Keldor - 9/13/2012, 1:22 PM
That is a giant ass ^^^
Keldor - 9/13/2012, 1:23 PM
WW is one of the best and most iconic characters DC has.
Mego - 9/13/2012, 1:24 PM
Whedon is correct that Kelley shouldn't be doing superheroes but that point extends to others like TIM BURTON and JOEL SCHUMACHER.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/13/2012, 1:27 PM
Creepiest Loki gif
AnditsOn1 - 9/13/2012, 1:35 PM
"Why don’t they know how to do that character? "
OMG, just because marvel is successful on doing this sort of thing, it doesn't mean DC has COMPLETELY no idea how to do it. And Joss, please stop pretending that you are an absolute authority on this kind of thing now. I still don't like your avengers whatsoever, and yes, I'm a DC fan, but with a GOOD reason.

ATrueHero1987 - 9/13/2012, 1:41 PM
If DC truly knew what they were doing, then they would try much harder with their other DC characters.
UrbanKnight - 9/13/2012, 1:41 PM
Don't completely agree with him.
Not all fanboy directors make great cbm. I.e... Daredevil.

Not all non fan directors make bad cbm. I.e... Nolan.

It just depends.

If you are new to comics, you can still become a fan.
lokibane2012 - 9/13/2012, 1:47 PM

No, getting rid of the lasso is a stupid idea. That's like saying batman should get rid of the cowl.

They should not approach it not as "a superhero project" which leads to a pandering, bland product, with a lack of unique identity like Green Lantern, or the shelved 90s Superman film.

They should also not approach it as "a female superhero project" which always leads to either piggish, sexist objectification or obnoxious, man-hating, pseudo-feminism, like most female superhero films have been so far.

They should simply approach it as "a Wonder Woman film". Get into HER character, try to show the way SHE thinks, HER personality, where SHE is coming from, HER mythology.

This is why I lose hope for Man of Steel every time a see a new tidbit about it. They seem way too focused on trying to make Superman appealing to the masses, making him more "relatable", self doubting, angsty, whiny etc. Like trying to make him like a mix of Batman & Spidey but failing miserably. Bats is Bats. Spidey is Spidey. Supes is Supes.

Again, focus on THE CHARACTER. Deal with Superman issues. Bring depth to the character by digging deep into Superman rather than borrowing from Batman or Spidey. Show why Superman is a nice guy. Show why he has chosen to protect. Show his heroism. Show his naivety. Show how his naivety can sometimes cost him things dear to him.
DioFoRio - 9/13/2012, 1:58 PM
Joss Dubya woulda' killed it.
AlanWarlock - 9/13/2012, 2:11 PM
The WB shouldn't be kicking themselves TOO hard over rejecting Whedon's take on "Wonder Woman." After all, prior to "The Avengers," his cache was a cult audience for three mildly popular television shows. He had virtually no successful feature film experience.
UrbanKnight - 9/13/2012, 2:17 PM
@ nailbiter111 true but I was talking about comics.
SCURVYDOG619 - 9/13/2012, 2:20 PM
Liked the subtle jab at U2- "turn off the dark,"
Gromblidor - 9/13/2012, 2:31 PM
Wuh! Bruce Timm! Why didn't I think of that? It's the only logical answer. Get everyone who worked on the Justice League animated series to make the movies. The stories were great. Even the animated Wonder Woman and Green Lantern movies were great! They should have used those stories for the movies. Do it WB!
AutobotCommander84 - 9/13/2012, 2:31 PM
Yeah, and people bitch and whine about how Fox and Sony [frick]ed up. We haven't had a good superman movie in almost 30 years and the only reason Batman's been doing good recently is because Christopher Nolan won't be Warner Bros. least most of the time if you don't count the extra hour of deleted footage.
McGribble - 9/13/2012, 2:42 PM
That's the first clip i've seen of wonder woman and I have to say, it is a damn good thing it never saw the light of day. That was CRAP! and I normally can find good in all things. That, wow it left the taste of vomit in my mouth.
Tevii - 9/13/2012, 2:50 PM
Joss is absolutely right. Im hands down a DC over marvel, but its painfully obvious which is doing it better. You have to care about the characters, you have to have filmmakers that care, and you have to have the studio execs leave their non-informed opinions out of it.
The closest thing WB has ever done to stay true to their characters is Batman Begins (The other two are crap that is nothing like the batman from comics, you know since Batman actually defeats his foes in the comics)or the original Superman.
I have no doubt his wonder woman wouldve been amazing. Not only is he a real comic book fan, he is also known for writing strong women.
WB is the root of all of DCs problems. Its the crappiest of corporate environments.
Thats why i wrote my WB editorial:
chuckg313 - 9/13/2012, 2:56 PM
wonder woman would be great if they did it in a similar style to the Spartacus series!
beane2099 - 9/13/2012, 3:02 PM
WB/DC DOESN'T know what to do with it's heroes. The only franchises they have that have gotten any traction are the two that have been firmly entrenched in the public eye for over 70 years: Batman and Superman. I'll say it again, I'll be more surprised if they make a Batman movie and it DOESN"T do well (which is not to sat Nolan's films weren't good). Marvel studios took character like Iron Man and Thor that had zero public awareness and crafted one of the most successful franchises of all time around them. That's how YOU know that THEY know what's up.

IMO WB/DC has a much cooler stable of characters to work with; characters that could really be spectacular on screen. But they've done next to nothing with them. That's the real shame of it. No way Marvel should have beat them to the punch on this, and yet, here we are, $3 billion and millions of new cinematic Marveliltes later. That's all I can say on that.

Tainted87 - 9/13/2012, 3:25 PM
Kind of relieved... I don't like Lizzy Caplan... at all.
Timerider84 - 9/13/2012, 5:31 PM
WB are waiting to see how Man of Steel does, before going ahead with the other characters like Wonder Woman and The Flash. Since Green Lantern did so poorly at the Box Office, they don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. It's a business, and if they can't make a profit, they aren't going to make it.

Only big name directors, actors, and writers get the green light right away without even looking at the script, it's that easy. People like Steven Speilberg, Tom Hanks, David Goyer, Chris Nolan, etc. You get the idea. They need a great script first, then they need a great director (for instance, they can get McG now, but if they wait another 6-9 months, they can get this director or that director)

You see, waiting is very much worth it in this business. It's not about how fast they get it to us, but, how great the product really is. If the outside of it looks cool, but the inside of it (story) is crap, then all you have is crap.
WinterSoldier24 - 9/13/2012, 5:58 PM

wonder woman = lesbian
brucemix - 9/13/2012, 6:51 PM
As much as I wanna see WW on the big screen, I think WB should just leave WW alone. Realistically, it would be a high risk venture and it would take a real visionary to place her on the big screen without making her look campy or awkward. In the 70's, wearing tights and being campy or corny was actually "in", but everything has changed nowadays.
Last thing you want is a repeat of something like Catwoman.
Casting would be tough as well. She's gotta be pretty smoking hot, but more importantly, know how to act! Think that's a major problem nowadays..
Yes, Whedon has a good track record of heroine shows, and he would have done a better job than Kelley, but we'll just never know...
Like everybody is saying, DC is rushing the JLA movie in response to Marvel's Avengers. Actually, if they did a single character well and can make just as much as the box office, why do they need to do JLA?
Do Flash - PLEASE!! WW - only if they can really figure it out... And just focus on doing them well individually!
iuhgluiblbjjkhkjhkljh - 9/13/2012, 8:59 PM
This is why I hate Warner Bros. They've destroyed most chances of a DCCU, because they want things done their way. They refuse to hire someone like Bruce Timm, who knows the content backwards and forwards, and instead go with some big hollywood director who knows nothing about superheros.
nikgrid - 9/14/2012, 1:17 AM
Whedons take on Wonder Woman would have been awful, check this out.
jaewest215 - 9/14/2012, 5:11 AM
Look...Marvel puts out ALOT of films. Some of which are not good. People mistake quantity over quality. The reason why Steve Jobs was successful because he focused on a handful of things and made great products. Sometimes less is more. Lets slow down on the "Marvel has it right" conversation. Not all the Marvel movies were good. People forget about Iron Man 2. When that movie didn't do as good people turned there head as if it doesn't exist.

I like what Whedon did with The Avengers. ALOT! He started something but he wasn't too good at anything. Let's remember that Marvel gave him guidelines and told him he can do anything he wants WITHIN these guidelines. Just because The Avengers was successful doesn't mean that all the other Marvel movies made before that were great. Some of these movies were made JUST to have an Avengers movie. It seemed rushed and not thought out.

I rather have less movies made with great quality than more movies that are average. Does DC need to push the envelope on making live action movies? Possibly but don't if you don't need to.

Fans are crazy. Nolan and Whedon are not CBM gods. They are just men. Lol. Each has limitations. I'm sick of this "Whedon/Marvel has it right. DC/Nolan is terrible." Or vice versa. Get out of your moms basement, date a girl, get some fresh air. Be rational.
nikgrid - 9/14/2012, 6:02 AM
@jaewest215 - Haha You got it exactly right man! People do forget that Iron Man 2 was balls, frankly Avengers was just ok IMO, but I thought Iron Man was a better put together film. Damn I wish this board had more people who thought like you and didn't do the the whole Marvel vs DC thing, then we could have some interesting discussions about CBMs rather than "Joss Whedon/Nolan is a god nyaahh"
huexolotl - 9/14/2012, 6:47 AM
@nikgrid and jaewest You're both idiots. You're on a cbm message board crying to imaginary nerds about how they need to get some pussy.

I like how you both put in your passive aggressive bullshit criticisms of Whedon and Marvel, but end your little crying jazz by stating how much you hate it when a fan does exactly what you did.

Please just stfu. Honestly, I would rather read a fan laying out a well thought criticism or praise, than to read your little backhanded bitching.
