Wonder Woman Original Concept Sketches from 1941

Wonder Woman Original Concept Sketches from 1941

A letter from Harry G. Peter to William Moulton Marston shows the Original Concept sketch for the Wonder Woman Costume.

Harry G. Peter is the illustrator and cartoonist who brought William Moulton Marston's to life. In a letter correspondence, we see the original concept art for the Wonder Woman Costume.

Marston's response to Peter is in red. Below is the transcript of the letter.

Dear Dr. Marston,

I slapped these two out in a hurry. The eagle is tough to handle as when in perspective or in profile he doesn't show up clearly — The shoes look like a stenographer's.

I think the idea might be incorporated as a sort of Roman contraption.

Dear Pete -

I think the gal with hand up is very cute. I like her skirt, legs, hair. Bracelets okay + boots. These probably will work out + see other suggestions enclosed. No on these. See suggestions enclosed for eagle. Braziers I suggest may work better in curved or slanting stripes - red + white. With eagle's wings above or below breasts as per-enclosed? Leave it to you. Don't we have to put a red stripe around her waist as belt? I thought Gaines wanted it — don't remember. Circlet will have to go higher — more like crown — see suggestions enclosed.

See you Wednesday morning — WMM

The Sketch apparently sold for $33,350 on Heritage Auctions.

lol someone paid over $30,000 for those gross sketches.
@Mr Murdock, me too. I would rather have a movie than a tv show. Quite frankly i dont want a Wonder Woman tv show.

While we are on the topic of Wonder Woman-related that kinda don't make sense...I have always wondered why she needs that invisible robot plane when she can fly when in uniform, and don't tell me it's stealth because she can be seen sitting in the damn plane!
Shaman - 11/15/2010, 12:27 PM
ManhuntersBastardChild- She couldn't fly at first. And her uniform is not what makes her fly. Unless... that's what it is in the new JMS run which i'll never read.

hmm...Shaman, that makes sense that her initial abilities did not include flight and so she needed a mode of transport. As per the uniform, I remember reading a JLA comic sometime in the late nineties when Artemis was in her costume, and if I remember correctly in her black temporary costume she was unable to fly. Hmm...could someone shed more light?
JYCowboy - 11/15/2010, 12:39 PM

Looks like they were going to give her a tube-top allowing an open mid-drift. I guess that was just way too sexy for the '40s.
HavocT - 11/15/2010, 12:48 PM
She looks like she should... get back in the kitchen.

@ManhuntersBastardChild: When Artemis was WW, Diana could still fly. She has been able to fly like Superman since the 80's Potter/Perez reboot. And in the silver age, she could glide on air currents...which sounds absurd really...Also, only the audience sees her when she's sitting in the plane. Otherwise, it is completely invisible, WW included. Unless you are Superman I guess....
Pokeysteve - 11/15/2010, 3:29 PM
Volume 3 after Infinite Crisis her powers were stripped unless she was in her costume. That was weird.

Great find Selina. You either found this with the letter part written out or you're a Pharmacist haha that guys handwriting is terrible.
LEEE777 - 11/15/2010, 4:18 PM
I'm kinda glad we're getting a WW anything, I hope it don't end up like the AQUAMAN pilot though!

Yeah agreed, it does need to be made on the epic size like THOR though... on the big screen!
selinakyle - 11/15/2010, 6:48 PM
yes she does look like snow white.
Blutf13isch - 11/15/2010, 10:54 PM
Taking into consideration that these where drawn in 1941 these look AMAZING for a concept work. I would have payed that price in auction for that. To think that this is one of the early art concepts of Wonder Woman I greatly appreciate it!! Also I do agree with T2 the face is Snow White-ish looking lol.
ManhuntersBastardChild - 11/16/2010, 6:21 AM
davidcub, pokeysteve thanks for filling in the blanks in my memory! It's good to know that she is completely invincible in the plane!
Betty - 11/16/2010, 9:35 AM
Harry Peter? Wow what a name! That's as bad as Dick Hyman.lol
Pokeysteve - 11/16/2010, 3:03 PM
Haha imagine if she wasn't invisible!! The bad guys would just point and laugh. No problem though. I noticed there aren't too many WW fans here =/
