BOX OFFICE: THE WOLVERINE Slashes Its Way To #1 Despite Opening Lower Than Expected

X-Men Origins: Wolverine clearly left moviegoers wary of The 'Ol Canucklehead as James Mangold's The Wolverine currently looks set to finish the weekend with around $25 million less than its predecessor. However, it's far from a box office flop! Hit the jump for further details.

The Wolverine managed to get the coveted 'A-' CinemaScore from moviegoers, after earning $4 million from Thursday late shows and a further $21 million on Friday. While this does fall below studio estimates (the original $65+ million opening has now been reduced to a far more conservative $60 million, despite rival studios claiming that it could fall as low as $53 - 56 million), this still isn't a bad result. With a budget of under $120 million, the film is far from a disappointment for the studio when compared to the likes of After Earth, The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim. It's also expected to do well overseas. "We didn’t expect this either," one Fox exec told Deadline. "But there have been times before when audience fatigue sets in. We’ll see how this weekend ultimately shakes out as Hugh is a very compelling office draw, and international is performing quite well. So we will have an excellent global story to tell tomorrow."

it was GOOD
MrCBM56 - 7/27/2013, 6:41 PM
My favorite of the summer by far with MOS at a close second.
jerryblake - 7/27/2013, 6:45 PM
Wolverine>G.I.JOE 2>Iron Man 3 = MOS>ST:Into Darkness

Yeah, i know. Watched G.I.Joe 2 yesterday. The movie rocks :)
typicalfanboy - 7/27/2013, 6:45 PM
it was pretty good...until the end, which made no sense.
jerryblake - 7/27/2013, 6:49 PM

yeah, the final act was kinda mess but still ...

*******SPOILER ALERT************

love that last scene with Logan and Yukio on the plane ( "where are we going now?").

Syberia for the sequel.

JULEZ13 - 7/27/2013, 6:50 PM
With such a low budget, this movie should easily make its money back since it is Wolverine.
SWelch - 7/27/2013, 6:50 PM
I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was just as good as MOS. Still the best CBM this year for me is Iron Man 3. There was a few minor things I didn't like but overall well done and it made up for the terible Origins.
thewonderer - 7/27/2013, 6:51 PM
Loved the film.

I can see the complaints on the end but it's being overblown way too much.

Best after credits scene in a while.
thebearjew - 7/27/2013, 6:52 PM
it was GOOD not great but not bad
I left the theater in an upbeat mood knowing that fact
thebearjew - 7/27/2013, 6:53 PM
look forward to buying the bloody edition on blu-ray
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/27/2013, 6:54 PM
Best CBM thus far but Thor looks like it could knock this film of the pedestal. I actually liked Thor 1
NovaCorpsFan - 7/27/2013, 6:55 PM
Best CBM so far this year. Made Origins look like Starship Troopers
SimonM7 - 7/27/2013, 6:55 PM
I really, really liked this movie. Thematically strong and committing fully to the character's journey. It doesn't juggle comic booky fanservice *at all* - which will irk some, including myself were this a lighter and more popcorny story - but as a movie of its own it has surprising momentum and some kinda striking imagery, too, for its genre.

The introspective musings on its themes reminded me of Batman Begins, the character focus and sometimes-dreamy imagery reminded me a bit of Drive and Lost In Translation, and when shit hit the fan it evoked Bourne/Bond more than other stylized superhero antics.

And I'm so happy that I actually liked it. You can sorta argue all day and night on forums about the merits of a movie, but the most devastating thing is when you genuinely just don't much care for it. I might go see it a second time -- the BD release is so far off.
jerryblake - 7/27/2013, 6:55 PM

lol. Did you just copy and paste ?
Whiteandgold - 7/27/2013, 6:56 PM
I got my video of the after credits on youtube taken down by fox. Then this other guy took my video and uploaded it without no problem. And now he got like 60k for my vid --"
Swiftsword777 - 7/27/2013, 6:57 PM
Best CBM of the year end the debates! Sorry MoS and IM3 lovers its the damn truth....
Ramiel - 7/27/2013, 7:00 PM
Best CBM this year thus far. And I say that as a person who despises Wolverine.
jerryblake - 7/27/2013, 7:00 PM

i like your Drive comparison. Wolverine really got this dreamy kinda fell attached to it. It almost felt like a some old tale. Or a fairytale if you will.
Swiftsword777 - 7/27/2013, 7:01 PM
@NovaCorpsfan Hey asshole Starship Troopers is a cult classic what rock have you been under turd.
ScottMontgomery - 7/27/2013, 7:02 PM
I'm sorry the ending just ruined what could have been a great movie!
jerryblake - 7/27/2013, 7:03 PM

sneaky bastard :)
pintoman - 7/27/2013, 7:03 PM
Tight film.
Redmest - 7/27/2013, 7:06 PM
Thought it was kinda dumb SPOILER ALERT:

how on earth did the matrix parasite thing get to his heart, and WHY wold that turn off his genetic mutation? that was just stupid. plus, i didnt know Wolverine had all of his memories back, since he was amnesiac in the xmen films, AND he lost his adamantium skelly thus going back to bone claws, give him his adamantium skelly back!
SimonM7 - 7/27/2013, 7:09 PM

Absolutely! Between Kuzuri and the tower/arrows scene (hopefully that's vague enough to not be a spoiler) the fairy tale imagery feels entirely deliberate.

It has some strong imagery throughout, but it might be better to talk about in a more spoilery "thread". Completely new to this place so I dunno where to go for that.
Maximus101 - 7/27/2013, 7:09 PM
Was ok at best, worst cbm this year so far.. Best part of the movie was the scene after the credits.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/27/2013, 7:10 PM
@Swiftsword, you're being sarcastic, right? That movie is cheesy as [frick] and I genuinely wanted all the characters to die. So if you're serious, why would you sling insults at me for my opinion. Oh, funniest thing in the movie:

"They sucked his brains out..."

Such a shit storyline with effects that reminded me of the movie Antz.
TheYoungMan - 7/27/2013, 7:10 PM
Haven't been totally thrilled with any CBM yet this year, but I think Man of Steel was the best so far.

MoS 8/10
The Wolverine 7/10
IM3 6/10
Emjeed - 7/27/2013, 7:13 PM
I saw this earlier today.. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised by was pretty good.. specially the mid credits scene
Darkknight23 - 7/27/2013, 7:14 PM
MOS sucked. This was better
DEATHbyEXILE - 7/27/2013, 7:14 PM
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/27/2013, 7:15 PM
Fox is stepping in the right direction. Despite the continuity issues, the wolverine and first class are proof that fox is serious about CBMs. They realize the pile of gold they're sitting on. It seems they have found a way to fix this problems with the continuity, through X:DOFP. The upcoming Fox/marvel movie has a lot of buzz surrounding. On thing that stands out is the rumor that an alternate timeline is going to be created to fix these continuity problems. Now if you ask me that's actually really impressive considering the fact they could've just rebooted the thing with first class. BravoFox, bravo indeed, if they're able to fix the mess they created in the 2000s than count me in.
prettynucIear - 7/27/2013, 7:15 PM

paul verhoven's movie don't take themselves very seriously like the gun fight up the escalator in Total Recall. they're mainly just fun, satirical, action packed movies.
Mike89 - 7/27/2013, 7:16 PM
I knew this movie would be somewhat of a dark horse for 2013. The after credits scene has me even more exited for DOFP.
NOLANITE - 7/27/2013, 7:16 PM
Ill download this.
If its not WB/DC then its crap!

NovaCorpsFan - 7/27/2013, 7:16 PM
It still sucked.
prettynucIear - 7/27/2013, 7:18 PM
maybe you suck and you're just an infant
TheWolverine08 - 7/27/2013, 7:19 PM
Best CBM of the year so far! I loved the more grounded realistic fighting which bucked the CGI fests we've seen this summer, the portrayal of Japanese culture was praise worthy, a pretty cool and complex story, Wolverine being a straight up animal, Jackman gave his best portrayal of Wolverine yet, and the after credits scene was awesome!

Best CBM of the year so far with MOS at a close second. Let's see if Thor: The Dark World can beat The Wolverine
jerryblake - 7/27/2013, 7:19 PM

1. he was poisoned. The parasite was spreading the poison.
Viper kissed him during the sleep. He thought it was just a nightmare.

2. about memories ... it's kinda tricky. He didn't remember the whole Nagasaki sequence. He remember some fragments of it. Then he went to Nagasaki with Mariko, and started to remember how it all went.
Swiftsword777 - 7/27/2013, 7:19 PM
@NovaCorpsfan LMAO!"They sucked his brains out..."
NovaCorpsFan - 7/27/2013, 7:20 PM
I thought the hand cut off was a dream sequence but then Hemsworth talked about it so it must be legit.
