Bryan Singer Talks Marvel vs Fox Battle; Says 'It's Not Healthy'

Continuing on with his interview from SciFiNow, Singer addressed the Marvel [Studios] vs Fox debate that exists among the fans. He had some pretty interesting things to say about both the Avengers and Marvel Studio's flagship character, Iron Man. Hit the jump for more..

The Marvel Studios/Fox debate has gone on for a while, with fans arguing over which studio puts out the better films. Much like Kevin Feige who commented on the DC vs Marvel battle, director Bryan Singer has a few words to say., “It’s not healthy for us,” says Singer. “I’ll tell you why: they’re both comic-books and at some point you can expand the universes, that’s where the comparison ends. He continued, “The Marvel universes – particularly Avengers and Iron Man – are… and it sounds defensive, and it is defensive, but only because people make comparisons between [X-Men: Days Of Future Past] and The Avengers, which is ludicrous. Is it though? Both franchises are juggling a large ensembe of characters, and fans have been very criticial of Wolverine's involvement in the X-Men franchise, feeling that he's the centre of attention, hogging the spotlight from the other X-Men characters.

Singer thinks this is the case with the MCU, implying that Iron Man is the centre piece of the that universe.“The Avengers is a mash-up of massive single character franchises of incredibly familiar characters and Iron Man. And did I mention Iron Man? Oh, and by the way – Iron Man.  What's interesting here is that  Iron Man  didn't even have the most screen time in that movie. Singer added, “They are huge, colossal franchises that are peppered with all these other characters that are, again, extremely famous and so yes, Fox will at some point synergise [the X-Men] characters and that process is slowly beginning, but it’s very different than taking movies that gross close to a billion dollars and then pushing them together into these giant broad movies. “If you want to give me Robert Downey Jr in a metal suit and have him join the X-Men, then yes, let’s go head-to-head [with Marvel Studios].” Would you guys love to see Iron Man in Fox's X-Men universe? Hugh Jackman has been expressing interest in an X-Men and Avengers cross over. It's unlikely to happen but a fan can dream right?

“It’s very different universes,” said the director. “The appeal is different and to try and do the same thing… this in an ‘inbetweequel’, OK, of two ensemble filmsAvengers and the Marvel movies are individual franchises based on major characters that’s why there are some Marvel characters in Avengers that don’t have their own movie, because I don’t know if they had their own movie anyone would be that interested. Singer continued to talk about how the average joe will not recognise the other X-Men characters outside of Wolverine, “We’re the bastard stepchild of the comic-book universe, you can go to my mom and she knows who Captain America is but you try and explain to her who Deadpool is? She doesn’t even know the Hulk – ‘You know, the Hulk! Green! Big guy!’ – so Gambit?

Do you think he has a point? Sound off below.

It's about as healthy as Gusto's obsession with young Vietnamese girls....
AstonishingArachnid - 5/21/2014, 8:23 AM
This is why I hate Bryan Singer. Not because I think hes a bad director. Just because he always comes of as a colossal douchenozzle. I mean seriously he sounds like the biggest prick in the world in this interview.
JoeMomma29 - 5/21/2014, 8:25 AM

I don't care for Singer but he's right.
JordanKing - 5/21/2014, 8:25 AM
Funny how he takes shots at Iron Man for hogging the limelight when Wolverine is known for taking center stage in the majority of X-movies.
SageMode - 5/21/2014, 8:26 AM
"The Avengers is a mash-up of massive single character franchises of incredibly familiar characters and Iron Man. And did I mention Iron Man? Oh, and by the way – Iron Man."

With the exception of First Class and not counting his own movies, there was always a subplot in each X-Men movie that was Wolverine's-centric, not to mention he had the most screentime in each film. Can you honestly say the same for each installment of the MCU including the Avengers that was Iron Man-centric?
Mrcool210 - 5/21/2014, 8:27 AM
talking about iron man taking the spotlight when its not necessary huh singer? I guess the pot is calling the kettle black.
MexicanSexyman - 5/21/2014, 8:27 AM
@AstonishingArachnid, so he acts like pretty much everyone on this site.
LMB10 - 5/21/2014, 8:29 AM
Captain America had the most screen time in The Avengers...
ruadh - 5/21/2014, 8:30 AM
There are plenty of things about fanboy behavior that are unhealthy.
Bucky - 5/21/2014, 8:31 AM
"Captain America had the most screen time in The Avengers..."

... and Iron Man still stole the limelight.
AstonishingArachnid - 5/21/2014, 8:31 AM
FYI Singer, incredible familiar characters? Sure now they are but before that the Avengers were second string superheroes compared to Superman, Batman, Wolverine and Spiderman. With the exception of the Hulk people only vaguely knew who Iron Man, Thor and Cap were and had no idea who Hawkeye and Black Widow were. Also the Avengers was the first Marvel movie to gross and none of them before that came close to a billion.
MercwithMouth - 5/21/2014, 8:32 AM
I don't like this article... too much editorializing...

But, to weigh in... Yes, the focus of the MCU was Iron Man, screen time be damned, RDJ is the biggest focus of Avengers. To deny it, is ridiculous. Also, it's not a bad thing. The most bankable character and actor always shines through.

Singer is right and wrong. The XFilms have too much of a Wolverine focus, and don't show enough team-dynamic. But according to reviews, DOFP begins the process of taking the focus off of Wolvie, and that's a good thing.

To compare the two films is ludacris though. As DOFP has a very complicated, engaging story, where as the Avengers is just a team up film.

I'm done now.
QuestiontheAnswer - 5/21/2014, 8:33 AM
Singer's not insulting Avengers lol.
Doopie - 5/21/2014, 8:33 AM

Yeah.. so.. apparently I REALLY like animals. And I'm a conspiracy theorist. I wonder who's wife I shagged in a past life to deserve this shit.

Us Pisces are good people.
MrCBM56 - 5/21/2014, 8:35 AM
People will be so defensive but in no way is he dissing or insulting the MCU.
Bucky - 5/21/2014, 8:35 AM
I've got to be honest McNyagano, this article is very editorialized. Your personal opinion is all over the place.
ATrueHero1987 - 5/21/2014, 8:35 AM
No, Banner/Hulk stole the limelight.
RichardBoldly - 5/21/2014, 8:36 AM
How about you just post the [frick]ing interview without expressing your own opinions towards the movie?
silverdog - 5/21/2014, 8:36 AM
brave words coming from the director of "x-men: days of wolverine in the future and wolverine in the past"....
MrCBM56 - 5/21/2014, 8:38 AM
@MrMartinMarvel Did you read everything or just the quotes?
MexicanSexyman - 5/21/2014, 8:38 AM
@SageMode, well Ironman gets mentioned more than any other hero in films that he is part of, not sure about Capitan America TWS and Thor TDW (I've seen twice but don't remember any reference). He is the main focus of MCU, which isn't a bad thing but I rather Capitan America be the main focus. He is the first hero to get a triolgy, has a cameo in TIH (just like Wolverine in First Class), gets mentioned in Thor, his dad is featured in Capitan America TFA, and he is the main focus of Avengers. Don't get me wrong, I like Ironman especially in Ironman 3. I am guessing Ironman will be the main focus of AoU.
MrCBM56 - 5/21/2014, 8:41 AM
Cap had the most screen time by what? A minute? Lmao gtfo.
DaVinci31 - 5/21/2014, 8:42 AM
This man just wants me to dislike him . . .
TheYoungMan - 5/21/2014, 8:42 AM
This is another "artitorial". Half of this is an interview and half is you putting your opinion after each thing he says.
SpiderParker - 5/21/2014, 8:44 AM
LOL, the Avengers being more popular than the X-Men? Sure Singer. Maybe Avengers are more popular now but no way you could have said the same thing 5 years back. MCU made those characters popular.

Marvel movies are individual franchises based on major characters that’s why there are some Marvel characters in Avengers that don’t have their own movie.

Based on major characters?? You must be kidding me. And BTW, only Black Widow and Hawkeye don't have their own movie... YET!

Singer must be truly desperate to stoop so low to make comparisons with Avengers. Well, coming from the guy who put Quicksilver in the DOFP just to [frick] with Marvel, its no surprise.
SuperCat - 5/21/2014, 8:44 AM
TheRationalNerd - 5/21/2014, 8:44 AM
Personally even though Downey didn't have the most screen time his presence was more solid than any of the cast. I guess that's just the power of acting but I did feel that he was a center piece within the film. I mean come on the guy had the first solo film before any of the other characters, it may not be true and it's not a problem but he's the "Wolverine" of the MCU.
MexicanSexyman - 5/21/2014, 8:45 AM
@cipher, I am not bisexual or some incest freak. Now Gusto and McGee on the other hand...
DaVinci31 - 5/21/2014, 8:46 AM
So much ignorance in such few sentences . . .
DefcoN - 5/21/2014, 8:46 AM
Iron man DID have more attention during Phase 1. Perfectly understandable, he's MS golden boy, the kick start to this whole Cinematic Universe, but IMO the rest of the Avengers are starting to to catch up on popularity levels, especially Cap. Can't say the same about Wolverine and the rest of the 2000's X-men, he was ALWAYS the face of the team in those movies and he got not just one but two spin-offs.
GA15 - 5/21/2014, 8:47 AM
Singer go find yourselves some twinks and take several sits.
marvel72 - 5/21/2014, 8:48 AM

MexicanSexyman - 5/21/2014, 8:48 AM
@TheBlackNerd, have you seen XMDOFP? I have to wait until Sunday.
@Snooper, oh ok, now I remember.
McNyagano - 5/21/2014, 8:48 AM
Wait how did I editorialize this? I'm reporting facts here, I don't think anything in this article has my opinion in. I simply made comparisons just like Singer was doing.
TheRationalNerd - 5/21/2014, 8:48 AM
Cap is most certainly growing to become a popular character as Iron Man in the MCU and I'm honestly glad to see it all happen.
