Does A Late Trailer Date For THE WOLVERINE Signal Trouble?

Does A Late Trailer Date For THE WOLVERINE Signal Trouble?

There's been growing concern over James Mangold's latest directorial effort, The Wolverine since the first trailer is premiering approximately 4 months before the films release. Is that a sign that the film is in trouble?

The Wolverine | First Trailer: March 2013; Release Date: Jul 26th, 2013 [4 month gap]

X-Men: First Class | First Trailer:February 2011; Release Date: June 3, 2011 [4 month gap]

Rise of The Planet of the Apes | First Trailer: April 2011; Release Date: August 5, 2011 [4 month gap]

X-Men Origins: Wolverine | First Trailer: December 2008; Release Date: May 1, 2009 [5 month gap]

And for comparison:

Iron Man 3 | First Trailer: October 2012; Release Date: May 3, 2013 [7 month gap]

The Avengers | First Trailer: October 2011; Release Date: May 4, 2012 [7 month gap]

The Dark Knight Rises | First Trailer: July 2011; Release Date: July 20, 2012 [12 month gap]

The Amazing Spider-Man | First Trailer: July 2011; Release Date: July 3, 2012 [12 month gap]

Dredd | First Trailer: June 2012; Release Date: September 12, 2012 [3 month gap]

Short answer is no. As you can see above, Fox regularly reveals the first trailer for their summer blockbuster films a scant few months before their release. This practice says nothing about the actual quality of the film as they've released both good films (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and terrible films (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and regardless of their quality, none have been a clear-cut flop. However, Fox has yet to achieve the gargantuan box-office success with their superhero franchises that Marvel (The Avengers $1.5B), Warner Bros. (The Dark Knight Rises $1.1B) or even Sony (The Amazing Spider-Man $752M) have achieved. Perhaps, it's because they wait so late to start their marketing campaign to the general movie going populace that's not checking for superhero movie news on a daily basis.

The Wolverine

Spinning out of the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan (Hugh Jackman) travels to Japan where he falls for the beautiful Mariko Yashida (Tao Okamoto) to the grave displeasure of her father Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi) and her half-brother, the fearsome Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee). But this isn't Logan's first trip to the Land of the Rising Sun or his first encounter with the Yashida clan. Based on a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) and Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall )and the comic book by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont.

Running Time: Unknown
Release Date: July 26, 2013
MPAA Rating: R (rumored)
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Brian Tee, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto
Directed by: James Mangold
Written by: Mark Bomback (screenplay) Christopher McQuarrie (screenplay) Frank Miller (comic book) Chris Claremont (comic book)

I dont think it signals trouble. I think it just means the director is trying to make sure everything is fine tuned.

No, this movie is going to own.
RaleighAntrobus - 2/13/2013, 6:59 PM
Anyone with high hopes for this is kidding themselves, so, yeah, I'm not surprised.
NovaCorpsFan - 2/13/2013, 6:59 PM
I want this to be good so here's hoping poor marketting don't effect it.
deanwilkins - 2/13/2013, 6:59 PM
Easy answer. People know who Wolverine is. There is no need to promote the film too early.

From what I've heard, this film will be amazing. They learned from Origins and Mangold likes to keep it quiet.
nach1wan - 2/13/2013, 7:00 PM
it could mean anything... i think this movie might actually be good
then again, i thought colonial marines wouldnt be the abomination that it actually is
TheSuperguy - 2/13/2013, 7:01 PM
I hope that the ninja aspect lets him finally get his classic suit.
RedeyeJedi - 2/13/2013, 7:01 PM
I'm excited for this and all, but honestly? I kind of agree with KamenRiderJ22 to an extent. Aronofsky leaving took away a large part of my hopes and interest.
marvel72 - 2/13/2013, 7:01 PM
i don't think so,if the trailer sells it people will go & see it.

even though i'd rather see a trailer about six months before the release.

numbers don't lie. Fox should definitely reconsider their approach to trailers. but that aside, i have complete and utter faith in this movie. it has a better team behind it then most CBM's to date have had.

as far as the box office goes though; i definitely dont see it doing Avengers numbers.
JorL5150 - 2/13/2013, 7:04 PM
Can't be as ridiculous as xmen origins or x3.

95 - 2/13/2013, 7:04 PM
Looking at your examples and comparisons: no. I don't see why anyone thinks this will fail at the box office, anyway.
ahhmynuts - 2/13/2013, 7:05 PM
i hope youre not lying...dont mess with my emotions!
NeoBaggins - 2/13/2013, 7:05 PM
Not really excited or expecting much, so this is fine. When they have something show, i'll check it out.
Inhuman - 2/13/2013, 7:05 PM
the x-men franchise will always be in trouble unless it goes back to marvel studios or they reboot it completely and start from scratch
bazinga85 - 2/13/2013, 7:06 PM
I see short gaps for both Dredd and First Class, and those movies were amazing. The late promoting may affect the earnings, but won't change the quality of the film. And why do we even care if late promoting affects the number of millions these rich basterds make off this movie?
Nick56 - 2/13/2013, 7:06 PM
No trouble to me as those dates show, even XFC had a late trailer and that was the best Marvel film in years.

Wolverine should be bad ass
Greengo - 2/13/2013, 7:06 PM
We'll see!

I'm [frick]in nervous though!

RedeyeJedi - 2/13/2013, 7:07 PM
@WOTAN- How does EVERYTHING about this movie suggest it will suck? Do you not like wolverine? Cause he's in it and he doesn't suck.
soberchimera - 2/13/2013, 7:12 PM
X-Men Origins: Wolverine had one of the best trailers I've ever seen, but the quality of the film itself was terrible, so who knows?
cartman87 - 2/13/2013, 7:16 PM
X-men first class was an awful movie . I couldn't watch more than 40 minutes . I am looking forward to wolverine though . However I am not excited to see Days Of Future Past
Tainted87 - 2/13/2013, 7:17 PM
I'm still on a Hugh Jackman high from Les Miserables.

I'm gonna leave you guys this gem :)
MitchConner - 2/13/2013, 7:19 PM
Dude, why is it decided that Origins Wolverine was terrible? I thought it was good, wtf is everyone's problem? I especially thought his origin, the first 15 minutes was cool...I thought the whole movie was cool....some people want too much
CharlesLord - 2/13/2013, 7:20 PM
still not gonna see it
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/13/2013, 7:20 PM
I think they know it well sell and either they dont want to show too much of any scene or they just havent finalized what they should show.
TheSuperguy - 2/13/2013, 7:21 PM
Like the fact that this is just called THE WOLVERINE, with no X in the title. Also, Mangold said that this takes place after THE LAST STAND, as a stand-alone film. It seems like they're trying to start the official WOLVERINE franchise, not a Wolverine film with a ton of X cameos or an X film all about Wolverine.
marvel72 - 2/13/2013, 7:24 PM
two best bits of x-men origins wolverine the opening credits & adamantium scene.

the rest of the movie sucked balls.
bonesmcgee - 2/13/2013, 7:24 PM

I like your lack of self-awareness. Your naivety. Your ignorant bliss.

It's like saying "I don't get why people don't like 'Batman & Robin. It was cool. It had Batman. What? Aren't you guys Batman fans?"
buzzman - 2/13/2013, 7:25 PM
I think it'll be fine - it's most likely a marketing strategy - Marvel's got three major movies coming out this summer and they're probably staggering their marketing so that they're not under-marketing any of them.
95 - 2/13/2013, 7:30 PM
@MitchConner It's watchable. I didn't like that a "Wolverine origin story" had that much mutants in it (which why I'm glad The Wolverine will be Logan-centric). And I didn't like how the climax had Professor X and I didn't like the introduction of Scott and Emma Frost... but I don't think it was awful. General audiences in my theater liked it. But of course, it wasn't adequate for fans, and I agree that it wasn't.
RaleighAntrobus - 2/13/2013, 7:31 PM
X-Men: First Class was amazing!? Jesus Christ, how can some of you call yourselves X-Men/comic book fans...

That movie was the antithesis of what the First Class should have been.
sameoldthing - 2/13/2013, 7:31 PM
The topic of this article is kinda stupid..but i took the bait & i say..Hell No!
Trailer release is irrelavant.

As for those talking about Wolverine:Origins..that movie had 2 major flaws,Deadpool was ruined & Sabertooth as Logan's brother sucked.
ATrueHero1987 - 2/13/2013, 7:35 PM
I don't think it's in trouble. Especially if the handle the some of tv spots for The Wolverine like they did X-Men: FC....drop the FOX logo & include only the Marvel

Seriously, I know y'all remember some of those TV spots where it didn't show FOX studio logo. Tried to pass it off as Marvel Studios movie.

TheSuperguy - 2/13/2013, 7:37 PM
It's hilarious how Fox tries to fake like they have a ton of superhero franchises to build their universe. They're all like "oh yeah, we've got the X-Men series, The Fantastic Four, the First Class series, the Wolverine series, and the Deadpool series." No, you've got X-Men and FF, and there's no way you can create a shared film universe out of those. It's like saying that you're going to make a universe using Wonder Woman and Aquaman only. This is gonna suck worse than the DC film universe. (There isn't any)
DumbledoreCalrissian - 2/13/2013, 7:42 PM
besides first class their hasn't been a good movie at fox for like a decade so im def holding my breath on this one.....
OrgasmicPotatoe - 2/13/2013, 7:42 PM
The late trailers might not make a bad movie, but it sure makes me mad ! Can't wait to see something from this, we got what, three of four images from the movie ?

I want my trailer !
ATrueHero1987 - 2/13/2013, 7:43 PM
@MARVELPSYCHO79 I think he got Un-banned. There's no red 'X' over his profile pic =/
