James Mangold Talks THE WOLVERINE; "Logan Is No Longer A Member Of Some Superhero Team"

Talking more about how The Wolverine ties in with the previous X-Men movies, director James Mangold confirms that the film is set "a period of time after" after The Last Stand and comments on the inspiration taken from the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller run.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director James Mangold has talked more about the setting of The Wolverine and why it was important that it take place AFTER the events of X-Men: The Last Stand. Needless to say, it came as a huge surprise when we learned last year that it wasn't going to be another prequel, but whether or not it will somehow tie-in to the events of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past remains to be seen. Check out some highlights below and be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page to read the interview in full.

On How Much Of A Inspiration The Claremont/Miller Series Inspired The Film:

A lot of that story and a lot of beats from that saga are in there — and a lot of characters. Without being religious about it, I think it’s a very admiring adaptation. Obviously when you’re adapting anything you make some changes. But all the characters are there – Yukio, Viper, Mariko, Shingen, and Logan obviously. The whole cast of characters that exist in that world exists in our film.

On The Decision To Set The Wolverine After X-Men: The Last Stand:

It’s set after X-Men 3, but I wouldn’t call it a sequel to X-Men 3. You have a choice the second you enter a world like this with a huge amount of comic books, backstories, three movies, a Wolverine origins movie … You have decide where you’re going to exist in relation to all these other things, particularly if you’re working with an actor who actually played the character in other films. I felt it was really important to find Logan at a moment where he was stripped clean of his duties to the X-Men, his other allegiances, and even stripped clean of his own sense of purpose. I was fascinated with the idea of portraying Logan as a ronin – the definition of which is a samurai without a master, without a purpose. Kind of a soldier who is cut loose. War is over. What does he do? What does he face? What does he believe anymore? Who are his friends? What is his reason for being here anymore? I think those questions are especially interesting when you’re dealing with a character who is essentially immortal.

On Why It Was Important For Wolverine To Have The "Baggage" From The Previous Films:

It was only to my advantage to set it after the X-Men films because the X-Men had effectively ended at that point. A lot of the key characters had died. There was a sense if I’m locating this film not five minutes after the other movie, but a period of time after that last X-Men movie, I can find a Logan who is living separate from the world. He is no longer a member of some superhero team.

Can't wait I think this could be really good.
Hellsing - 1/8/2013, 11:10 AM
Well I am optimistic about this the buzz on Christopher McQuarrie's script was pretty [frick]ing intense so it will be interesting to see how the re-writes effected it. Mangold has done some good work in the past so I am definitely cautiously optimistic about it.
shamo - 1/8/2013, 11:14 AM
great screenwriter, great director. should be great. only thing i'm worried about is the cast. outside of jackman i only know 2 of them and thats from modeling not acting.
Dax - 1/8/2013, 11:14 AM
This guy sounds like he knows what he's doing. I'm definitely excited for this.
gambgel - 1/8/2013, 11:14 AM
so according to 'His' vision, Wolverine left the X-men.

At the end of the day, x-men franchise Wolverine does whatever the f**** he wants, even if its right or not
ATrueHero1987 - 1/8/2013, 11:15 AM
I'm, still waiting for a trailer. This better be as good as Mark Miller is hyping it up to be. Saying it's FOX Iron Man...we will see. I still think it's funny he praised The Avengers...and then later kinda changed his mind about it.smh
johnblake - 1/8/2013, 11:16 AM
how did first class eliminate x3 and FC?
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 1/8/2013, 11:16 AM
No offense but the entire handling of one of, if not the most, beloved franchises in the Marvel catalog is an absolute [frick]ing dumpster fire. The X-Men films were 90% god awful and the Wolverine movie was so bad it's hard to find the right adjectives to describe the carnage. I am, because I'm a [frick]ing homer idiot, once again excited to see how they handle my all time favorite Wolvie tale. So help me god if they [frick] this up like the last set of films I'll bitch about it a tremendous amount before I give them another chance... :o|
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 1/8/2013, 11:18 AM
Ok I don't consider "First Class" a part of that group lol.
ManofSteel23 - 1/8/2013, 11:18 AM
Kinda makes sense, logan had a sense of purpose when being in a team,he had friends and ''family'' and now jean is dead an hes left the xmen what does he do now, should be an interesting movie, but we have heard all this shit before,so Im optimistic about it,to tie with days of future past I hope he goes back to the xmen after this, otherwise they should set days of future past before xmen 3
Bucht - 1/8/2013, 11:19 AM
7 months to go and my expectations are still below zero.
storyteller - 1/8/2013, 11:21 AM
Well First Class didn't really feature him minus that cameo. Also Logan in the movies has never been apart of the X-men. It's been him guest starring the X-men.
ManofSteel23 - 1/8/2013, 11:26 AM

exactly right, all 3 films was wolverine guest starring the xmen since all 3 films followed his ''journey'' which was [frick]ing stupid
superotherside - 1/8/2013, 11:29 AM
Ehh, it'll probably impress some because their expectations will be so low, but I still say that Fox just needs to give the rights to Marvel Studios.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/8/2013, 11:35 AM
meh. forgot this movie was happening.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/8/2013, 11:35 AM
superotherside That's not going to happen unless they get a BIG check...or the rest of the movies straight tank at the BO AND get negative reviews.

@storyteller said is best. That's the problem with "solo" Wolverine movies.
DioFoRio - 1/8/2013, 11:41 AM
I am with ya ciph?
WelcomeBackFrank - 1/8/2013, 11:43 AM
I'm marginally excited for this and "Days of Future Past" but the thing that ruined "Origins" and the other X-Men films was an overabundance of mutants onscreen. Limit it down. Yeah, they all got unique abilities, but flesh them out and let them grow. I fear Fox is going to tell Mangold to overload this film with unnecessaries like "Origins."

"Days of Future Past" I'm worried about because "First Class" was awesome, best X-Men movie yet, and by adding in time-travel, and trying to fix the already [frick]ed up timelines seems like a sad excuse. I liked Vaughn's idea of having Magneto behind the JFK assassination.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/8/2013, 11:44 AM
SHHH - 1/8/2013, 11:44 AM
say whay u want... everyone will go and see it....
gambgel - 1/8/2013, 11:47 AM
Give me Days of future past teaser poster and Ill be happy for the rest of the year, lol.

about this movie.... good luck to Wolverine fans. I'll watch it at home later in the year, I guess
vtopa - 1/8/2013, 11:47 AM
The more I hear about this movie the more I like what I am hearing. I started out luke warm, especially after Arnonfsky left, but this guy sounds like he has the chops.
gambgel - 1/8/2013, 11:49 AM

great team of x-men. would add another classic x-men like Angel, Iceman, or someone like Rogue or Kitty but still great team/pic
Gunslinger - 1/8/2013, 11:54 AM
Unless the reviews are excellent I won't see it in the cinema. Gone are the times when a comic book movie was a rare thing and something a fan absolutely needed to go and see. We can afford to expect quality. I was hyped about the movie, but it seems they (FUX with its usual let's [frick] this up attitude) is changing the original story to acommoodate the last stand - which is complete garbage imho. Wolverine needed a reboot, and this isn't it.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/8/2013, 11:59 AM
gambgel Yea, I would to. In fact, I would prefer this line up

Maybe not all of them in one movie. lol
jimoakley666 - 1/8/2013, 12:09 PM
Really looking forward to this. Few arse-holish comments above.
BubblesShedAndBreakfast - 1/8/2013, 12:11 PM
Man Fox sure [email protected] the X-Men's continuity up.:(
Kyos - 1/8/2013, 12:15 PM
Will see this movie. Not hyped in the slightest though.
Hellsing - 1/8/2013, 12:16 PM
@Levikutz are you like Xaviers illegitimate son, because that would explain you "attempting" to and very badly I must say predicting the future. I don't think you know much about business but by default IM3 and hell even thor will see boost in there box office collections simply by being loosely connected to the Avengers.

The thing that gives me hope for this movie is the script. Hoping this turns out to be a good movie.
DioFoRio - 1/8/2013, 12:23 PM
lol...no question mark
DioFoRio - 1/8/2013, 12:24 PM
lol....hug that shit out!
TheAbomination - 1/8/2013, 12:24 PM
This X-Men film continuity is all f*ucked up. How this film is gonna tie-in with Days of Future Past is beyond me.
Newbus - 1/8/2013, 12:35 PM
DOFP and the JFK assassination makes no sense whatsoever.

JFK gets assassinated. Magneto wants him dead? So what's the in Magneto deflecting the bullit? To keep JFK alive? Looks good on screen but a fundamentally stupid idea.
8thDynasty - 1/8/2013, 12:43 PM
I am so confused with this story line.

I have no idea what movies "count" and which movies don't.
Ryguy88 - 1/8/2013, 1:12 PM
I don't give a [frick] what he wears, I just want to see a good movie!
Funsize - 1/8/2013, 1:31 PM
I'm not all that excited about this movie but I'll still go see it when it comes out.
HBarnill - 1/8/2013, 1:32 PM
casanovagunny - 1/8/2013, 1:41 PM
kinda excited for this but still have some doubts. I'm not a fan of Origins and I keep going back to the first time Jackman portrayed Wolverine in X-Men, that was classic. He needs to go back to that. we'll see.
m0th3r - 1/8/2013, 1:58 PM
Fox doesnt know..because they dont have a frakin plan. WHY WOULD ANYONE THINK OTHERWISE? They have produced promised high and delivered low across the board. This, along with DOFP, will keep disappointing until WE STOP BUYING TICKETS and they return it home..double goes for FF projects....
AmazingFantasy - 1/8/2013, 2:05 PM

Bring it on a teaser...?
