NEW MUTANTS Movie In The Works

NEW MUTANTS Movie In The Works

At Cinemacon 2012 in Las Vegas, 20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman hints at expanding their X-Men franchise with a New Mutants movie currently in early development stages at Fox.

Not a whole lot of details from this particular announcement, but Collider spoke to Fox CEO Tom Rothman at Cinemcacon, where Rothman reportedly "all but confirmed that a New Mutants movie will be announced soon"---

Collider:When can fans expect an announcement on some of these other properties? Before Comic-Con, after Comic-Con, at Comic-Con?

Rothman: In the summer.

Collider: Are you talking to filmmakers right now?

Rothman: Let me just say this. All I have to say is, I agree with you in your assessment of the potential in a lot of these [Marvel] characters.

X-Men: First Class definitely changed the vast majority of opinions here about Fox and their handling of the X-Men franchise. Of course, many attribute that turn around to Matthew Vaughn and the film's talented acting ensemble so it will be difficult to formulate an opinion about the project until more details are revealed.

The New Mutants are a group of teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training published by Marvel Comics. They have been the main characters of three successive comic book series, which were spin-offs of the popular X-Men franchise.

The first team of New Mutants characters was created by Chris Claremont (long-time writer of Uncanny X-Men) and artist Bob McLeod; although the concept for a "X-Men-in-training team" was originated by Uncanny X-Men artist John Byrne in a letter he wrote to Claremont in 1978. They first appeared in 1982's Marvel Graphic Novel #4 and were subsequently featured in their own title from 1983 until 1991. Also, like its parent title, The New Mutants highlighted interpersonal and group conflict as well as action and adventure, and featured a large ensemble cast. With the end of the first series, the characters were relaunched as X-Force in a new, eponymous series.

The second New Mutants series, launched in 2003, featured a new group of teenage mutants; but unlike the original New Mutants, they were only part of a huge cast of students at the Xavier Institute. At first, they were notable for their drive to become superheroes, but soon rival internal groups played a large role in the series. In 2004, it was relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X, after which the central group was formally dubbed the "New Mutants." In the aftermath of the "M-Day" crossover storyline in late 2005, the remaining students were merged into one junior team, the New X-Men.

The third New Mutants series, reuniting most of the original team, launched in May 2009.

elcaballerooscuro92 - 4/26/2012, 2:07 PM
that's gonna confuse a lot of non comicbooks fans demographic. they'll be all like: "where's wolverine?" "where's magneto and professor X?"
StrangerX - 4/26/2012, 2:09 PM
They better be thinking about Stephan Lang for Cable.
StrangerX - 4/26/2012, 2:14 PM
@elcallerooscuro92- The New Mutants story would most likely pick up right after the death of Prof X which happened in The last Stand.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/26/2012, 2:18 PM
As long as I get my gay mutants back in the X men first class sequel, then I dont care what other mutants they make into movies :P
Fogs - 4/26/2012, 2:20 PM
@imnotahero - I don't know why but I LOLed at your comment, maybe the caps lock, lol!
SamHell - 4/26/2012, 2:23 PM
scroll down for the same ol rhetoric
elcaballerooscuro92 - 4/26/2012, 2:26 PM
but i tought the first class was some kind of reboot
HelaGood - 4/26/2012, 2:27 PM
new mutants are awesome and work as a comic book, but will be a crap movie. the last xmen movie was basically a new mutants movie. and it was crap. would love to see warlock though... and penance...

x-men as a property need to leave fox. forever.
BooYah - 4/26/2012, 2:28 PM
I wouldn't put your hopes up, they'll probably screw up the team roster again.
revloveR - 4/26/2012, 2:31 PM
lol @ imnotahero. and i concur.
Shadowelfz - 4/26/2012, 2:34 PM
New Mutants? Seriously? Lame.
BigHec - 4/26/2012, 2:36 PM
God Fox is gonna try to crank out as many SuperHero movies they can after the Avengers/Batman/Spiderman summer orgasim which would include a Shitty FF, DareDevil, and now New Mutants which by then people will hate superhero movies cuz of the trash fox will put out
ecksmanfan - 4/26/2012, 2:39 PM
Just confused on why they need a whole separate movie. Fox has already butchered timelines and character involvement, why not just include these characters in an X-Men flick?
ecksmanfan - 4/26/2012, 2:40 PM
BooYah!!!!! Where have you been?! I've been worried sick!
dav1dca1n - 4/26/2012, 2:43 PM
Bring on Magma and Wolfsbane!!!!

OtakuPapi - 4/26/2012, 2:43 PM
A good way to move the X-men series forward like i wish they would do Batman...With A Nightwing movie. Everybody knows Robin so its not hard to introduce Dick As Nightwing Get that dude from Vampire Diaries to play him and we have a movie. But New Mutants...YES...YES...YES
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/26/2012, 2:43 PM
Cool!... More teens! -_-
SamHell - 4/26/2012, 2:45 PM
who's the dark character with the yellow eyes, crazy smile and wild hair?
MassExecutions - 4/26/2012, 2:47 PM
As others have stated, all we know is that they are considering making a movie CALLED "New Mutants". There's no way to know what characters will be in it, what the storyline will be, or if it will have ANYTHING to do with the comic.

Also, by the time it gets to theaters, will be called "X-Men: New Mutants" to preserve brand recognition.
HeyVanity - 4/26/2012, 2:48 PM
^It's Warlock. As long as this opens up a doorway to Cable, color me stoked.
acidbath - 4/26/2012, 2:48 PM
Fox.....I hate you
BlindLemonShemp - 4/26/2012, 2:55 PM
this sounds worse than a remake of jungle fever starring arsenio hall and david spade
ralfinader - 4/26/2012, 3:00 PM
Fox presents: The New Mutants. Wolverine must gather a force of young mutants to face off against a threat that shattered the X-Men. See the New Mutants: Emma Frost, Toad, a 4 year old Cyclops, Magik, Cable, and hilarious robot helper Warlock learn to become a team to fight the force known as Apocalypse.

As bad as what I just wrote sounds, I believe Fox will make it even worse.
marvel72 - 4/26/2012, 3:00 PM
it would work better as a tv show & second only marvel studio's would make a decent new mutants movie because they respect the source.
RorMachine - 4/26/2012, 3:11 PM
The original New Mutants was one of my favorite comics for a long time, some really great characters there.
BJD - 4/26/2012, 3:12 PM
X-MEN FIRST CLASS was a good movie but it was still a butchery of the source material and terribly inconsistent with FOX's OWN X-MEN universe...FOX should just give up the rights and let the big boys over at MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT handle it
Zarog - 4/26/2012, 4:11 PM
I hope they don't make it so that the rights revert back to Marvel.
TheStranger - 4/26/2012, 4:23 PM
I would prefer an X-Factor Spin-off with the original team, but oh well...
PsyGuy - 4/26/2012, 4:24 PM
I love the X-Men movies, but I'd kill to see what Marvel Entertainment would do with it!
Peteyparker - 4/26/2012, 4:28 PM
1st: O_o.............
2nd: What happened to Deadpool?
3rd: Here comes another continuity!!!
Im so tired of FOX. Eventually they will be competing with their own CBMs!!!

Ranger14 - 4/26/2012, 4:29 PM
Another teen character movie. Meh. Not to reiterate what has been stated by a few that it will screw up an already screwed up continuity even more. I'm even confused. :-P
PeterParker1991 - 4/26/2012, 4:37 PM
I'm optimistic about this. New Mutants and First Class is basically the same thing, so unless this is after the FIrst Class trilogy, why bother?
GazelTGM - 4/26/2012, 4:41 PM
That's great. So what continuity will this film be set in? X-Men trilogy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, or X-Men First Class?
skullboy - 4/26/2012, 4:43 PM
Macksimus - 4/26/2012, 5:09 PM
I'd rather see an x-force movie centered around x-23. Bring back wolverine, and add archangel, domino, warpath, and wolfsbane. Or do it with the uncanny team.
Macksimus - 4/26/2012, 5:18 PM
Hopefully the new avengers movie makes so much money marvel can finally buy back the rights. FC was a good movie imo but it was a headacheto watch as an x-men fan. I wish marvel had the rights so that they can reboot it by adapting x-men #1 and on into a nice trilogy of movies.
mrHJK - 4/26/2012, 5:18 PM
Cool deal.. X-Men is the franchise I'm least worried about getting back in the MCU. Fox needs to let go of DD&FF soon though.

ThatHawkguy - 4/26/2012, 5:20 PM
Can't wait to see how they fūck this one up!
