The Australian actor is coming home, as it has just been announced today that James Mangold will film The Wolverine in Sydney, Australia. Click the jump for more details.

Hugh Jackman won't be homesick when filming for The Wolverine begins as Australia has secured a deal to have part of the movie filmed in Sydney. The deal is said to worth up to $80 million to the local economy, and will generate over 2000 jobs.

"The Wolverine is expected to generate more than $80 million in production expenditure in NSW and create more than 720 jobs for NSW-based cast and crew, along with opportunities for 1200 extras," said Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner.

"It is a testament to our screen industry that Hugh Jackman and his team have chosen to come back to Australia after such a positive experience making the X-Men Origins."

Although some production work is scheduled for the US, another $10 million worth of post-production work will be done here, especially visual effects. Both state and federal government incentives were provided to bring the film to Sydney.

Plot - Logan beginning a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man. Since Logan won’t take “no” for an answer, it puts him into battle with her father and her samurai-sword-wielding brothers and Silver Samurai.

The Wolverine will be directed by James Mangold (Knight and Day), the script has been written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects). Hugh Jackman will of course be back in the lead role of Logan/Wolverine, and the film will claw into theaters July 26, 2013.

Ha1frican - 4/19/2012, 10:32 AM
Tbh I used to love Jackman as Wolverine but after XO:W I felt like he as just phoning it in and doesn't wanna do it anymore.
MovieMaster - 4/19/2012, 10:38 AM
Is that synopsis new?
Greengo - 4/19/2012, 10:39 AM
Cool. Hope this is Jackman's last one.

In Hugh's defense I've never known him to 'phone in' a role.
BlazinTexan - 4/19/2012, 10:42 AM
He needs to wear the yellow and brown suit !!!!!!! with a goddamn mask!
nuck82 - 4/19/2012, 10:44 AM
Because Australia looks just like japan lol
nuck82 - 4/19/2012, 10:46 AM
And of course he wants to film in Australia again. That's where he's from lol
ComicReader - 4/19/2012, 10:46 AM
The first one sucked, hopefully this one is a lot better.
JohnWilbanks - 4/19/2012, 10:49 AM
Long past time to reboot Wolverine. Hugh Jackman needs to be replaced with someone a little more Wolverinish...
MattSpatola - 4/19/2012, 10:49 AM
It does say that part of the movie is being filmed in Australia. That doesn't mean that part of the movie won't be filmed in Japan too.
superotherside - 4/19/2012, 10:49 AM
Fox: "Since Origins was so good we are going to make another one."

optimus69 - 4/19/2012, 10:49 AM

YeaOkYea - 4/19/2012, 10:50 AM
"...such a positive experience making the X-Men Origins."........ HUH?! Excuse me? Origins was crap. I didn't have a positive experience watching it.
YeaOkYea - 4/19/2012, 10:50 AM
I 2nd that @PatientZero "Can't believe the movie got sequel. The first was absolutely crap, the acting wasn't very good, except Liev Schreiber, and sometimes Hugh Jackman. They tried to cram in waaaaaaay to many mutants, and the whole Blob scene was just stupid. Also Gambit was shitty too."
Odin - 4/19/2012, 10:51 AM
The Origins was otherwise good except the "Barakapool", they sould've put the Omega Red into ending battle instead.
tford14 - 4/19/2012, 10:52 AM
Hopefully they use a different effects company this time as origins special effects were terrible!
Sourpatch64 - 4/19/2012, 10:56 AM
Sooo....he is a home wrecker...nice.
KNIGHT3000 - 4/19/2012, 10:56 AM
Love the plot!
6of13 - 4/19/2012, 10:59 AM
I was kind of hoping it would film in the snow - especially in a Japanese winter.

I'm always happy to just see a favorite character from comics on the big screen.I'm old enough to remember when there were none.I don't think Origins was the greatest comic book movie ever but I still liked it.The only problem I had was the stupid fake Deadpool character other than that it was an enjoyable film.I'm looking forward to part 2.I think Jackman does a great job as Wolvie and that's coming from someone who has read X-Men comics his whole life.
valeriesghost - 4/19/2012, 11:02 AM
what ever. I'll believe it when i see it.
thalidomide - 4/19/2012, 11:02 AM
Guys check this out
ManThing - 4/19/2012, 11:06 AM

The "Japan story" is my favorite Wolverine story. I bought the books in the 80's when they were new. To this day I look upon that Wolverine as the best Wolverine. It's the character's defining moment. His finest moment.

I know, with almost 100% certainty that it is impossible that this particular film studio could do that story justice. After all that we have seen come and go I just don't beleive it could happen.

I despised the last one. I won't even waste my money on this one.
MarvelChile - 4/19/2012, 11:09 AM
Wolverine in more x-men films and in The Avengers, no more solo films...
SuperJoe - 4/19/2012, 11:14 AM
how bout they recast as well then I might be interested. I'm tired of watching a closet homosexual broadway actor playing one of the most badass comicbook characters ever.

That is all.
jazzman - 4/19/2012, 11:14 AM
WTF so once again Hugh Jackman lied he said the next one would be filmed in Japan.

Starjammer - 4/19/2012, 11:21 AM
Dude come on. Hugh Jackman is still bad ass.
headlopper - 4/19/2012, 11:24 AM
Read this. That is all...
ralfinader - 4/19/2012, 11:24 AM
Hated the last movie, but I love Wolverine, so damn it, good or bad, I'll see it.
Joe6Pack74 - 4/19/2012, 11:25 AM
I thought we already started filming this.
Curmudgeon - 4/19/2012, 11:25 AM
There is a LOT of studio space in Sydney. Studio space they can use to make sets that LOOK like Japan.

Just FYI, since some people here apparently don't understand how movies work.
thewolfx - 4/19/2012, 11:42 AM
so the director everyone wanted left becuase he didnt want to travel so far to japan , now there not going to japan at all

dumb move
sexfoodcomics - 4/19/2012, 11:44 AM
Why do all the wolverine movies have to be a love story. Why can't they be dark gritty movies that look into the mind of a man captu and tortured and not knowing who he is.
SLK - 4/19/2012, 11:52 AM
Hugh Jackman FTW!
TheMyth - 4/19/2012, 11:57 AM
Soooooo cannot wait for this. After my excitement of Avengers dies down, this and First Class 2 will take its place.
GreyChaos13Zero - 4/19/2012, 11:59 AM
who is the main villain in this? I enjoyed Origins, hope this one is better tho?)
jimoakley666 - 4/19/2012, 12:05 PM
At least it's moving ahead again. After First Class I think FOX may have learned their lesson and I can't wait to see what they do with this.
Fogs - 4/19/2012, 12:09 PM
The 1st was such a shit movie.

The only ppl I know who tolerated the movie are the ones who don't know NOTHING of the character. My highlights:

- They killed half world in the beginning of the movie for a adamantium stone that had no value for the man, stryker could've just asked that.

- Logan accepting willingly to participate in the x-weapon program.

- The whole X-weapon escape, he was having dinner with the old fellas at the same night. He was supposed to wander in the snow for god knows how long, killing animals to survive, totally crazy.

- That shitty blob scene was ridiculous. BTW almost ANY fight on the movie could be avoiding just talking over the situation.

- Bad Gambit. Not the one I know. Also another unnecessary fight, without reason.

- Deadpool. What to say about that one? Besides he can shoot optic blasts with his head chopped off and has swords (sigh) longer than his forearms?

- And the damn adamantium bullet. Seems someone remembered "OMG WE NEED TO ERASE HIS MEMORY! SOMEONE HAS AN IDEA?". That was the worst. How the hell Stryker KNEW it would erase his memory? He even says so, before shooting, "this will erase his memory"! WTF? What's wrong with the memory implants? I can't believe that was TOO HARD!

- Shitty special effects. I remember noticing that in the theater, when he's looking at his claws on that bathroom scene, the claws dancing loosely in his fists.

As you see this sequel will need to be VERY GOOD for me to even bothering to watch.
headlopper - 4/19/2012, 12:10 PM
@jimoakley666- Fox only learns their lesson when it involves apes.
But I hope I'm wrong n' your right.;)
Vadakin - 4/19/2012, 12:15 PM
@sexfoodcomics A hell of a lot of Wolverine stories in the comics revolve around love interests. In fact if you want a "dark and gritty" Wolverine movie then having a love interest is actually not a bad idea. XO: Wolverine, as terrible as it was, had a pretty good set up with Wolvie hunting the man who killed his Love Interest (was it Silver Fox? Doesn't matter). The problem of course was what happened in the rest of the movie.

The thing about Wolverine is that actually, he's not all that different from the Hulk. He puts on a facade of wanting to be left alone but actually, he wants nothing more than to belong somewhere. That's why he was such a great part of the X-Men. For his loner attitude and all his bravado, you knew that you could always count on him.

Of course he also has a lot of demons, a lot of rage inside him and some of his best stories essentially see him struggling to hold on to his humanity and a love interest tends to play a big part in that. Of course it's awesome to see him enter that beserker rage state but it's not something he wants to embrace.

In truth, Wolverine's life before joining the X-Men is defined by his failures. It seems that any time he finds a moment of peace or happiness, it's snatched away from him and it tends to be his own fault, at least partially. Wolverine doesn't see himself as a loner because he hates people, he forces himself to play the loner role because he feels that otherwise people will get hurt, including himself. His wounds may heal, but that doesn't mean the pain goes away.

A love interest can play an important role in exploring that.
