Will Fox Ever Make A Sequel To X-MEN: THE LAST STAND? A Brief Update From Iceman Actor Shawn Ashmore

Will Fox Ever Make A Sequel To X-MEN: THE LAST STAND? A Brief Update From Iceman Actor Shawn Ashmore

Fox's X-Men:The Last Stand may have been panned by the critics but it's still the #1 X-Men film to date with a box office gross of $459M. So will we ever see a continuation of that series?

Jean killed Cyclops and Professor X before Wolverine ultimately put her down. At the end of the film, we're left with an X-Men team minus Professor X [who stole a new body], his first two students and a mutant population that now has a cure. At this point, there's not a whole lot you can do with the franchise.....except put things back the way they're constituted in the source material. Technically, you never see Jean kill Cyclops and Professor X does indeed jump into a new body. The end scene with Magneto also suggests that the "mutant cure" was not permanent. And if you're familiar with the comic books, you know that The Phoenix and Jean Grey have come back from the dead more times than most would like. Here's what Shawn Ashmore who portrayed Bobby Drake aka Iceman shared with Examiner about potentially returning for a continuation of that particular X-Men series (I refuse to believe X-Men: First Class is in continuity)---

“I am still under contract to play Iceman if they make another 'X-Men' movie but there are so many superhero films out there right now. The market is saturated with them. I would love to come back and play that character again, though. It was really unique to sort of grow up playing a character. As I was growing up and maturing, so was the character. But it was an amazing experience and I would love to do it again. I hope that we get chance to make another 'X-Men movie but I really do not know if we will. I guess we will just have to wait and see.”

Not much hope offered up there, but it's interesting to see that he's still under contract. I'd have to think that if he's still under contract then so are the rest of the cast, except maybe Hugh Jackman who's gone on to make two solo Wolverine films. I personally hope they do make a direct sequel and that they somehow bring the story to a more "sensical" conclusion.

Running Time: 1 hr 44 min
Release Date: 26 May 2006 (USA)
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Starring: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry
Directed by: Brett Ratner
Written by: Simon Kinberg, Zak Penn

The X-Men film series consists of superhero films based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The films star an ensemble cast, focusing on Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, who is drawn into the conflict between Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart / James McAvoy) and Magneto (Ian McKellen / Michael Fassbender), who have opposing views on humanity's relationship with mutants. Xavier believes humanity and mutants can coexist, but Magneto believes that mutants are destined to rule humanity. The films also developed subplots based on the comics' Weapon X and Dark Phoenix storylines.

20th Century Fox earned the film rights to the characters in 1994, and after numerous drafts, Bryan Singer was hired to direct X-Men (2000) and returned for X2 (2003). He left a potential third and fourth film to direct Superman Returns, leaving Brett Ratner to direct X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Critics praised Singer's films for their dark, realistic tone, and subtexts dealing with discrimination and intolerance, but Ratner's film was met with mixed reviews. Nonetheless, each film outgrossed the last, and Fox developed two prequels: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and X-Men: First Class (2011). Both prequels have been planned to continue into two separate trilogies. Some spin-offs of certain characters are being considered, with Deadpool being the only one confirmed so far. There are also discussions of a potential continuation to the main trilogy.

[frick] U FOX
WolvieCBM - 5/11/2012, 7:29 AM
Why would they? They have a good thing going with FC.
Kosiji - 5/11/2012, 7:31 AM
Let's hope not.
Stumblin - 5/11/2012, 7:33 AM
After seeing First Class why even fathom this idea? First Class made all three of the X-Men movies its bitch.
Mego - 5/11/2012, 7:38 AM
If you read up on X Men 1st class its sort of a reboot. Marvel has quality clauses in the contracts, WHY DIDNT THEY STOP LAST STAND FROM BEING MADE??
TheOther - 5/11/2012, 7:38 AM
just continue the X-Men First Class sequels
Kalel219 - 5/11/2012, 7:38 AM
IM, please PLEASE keep posting more Jayden :D
Stumblin - 5/11/2012, 7:43 AM
@monkeyballs3, X2 was the best, but I still enjoyed First Class more, I wish they had done this in the first place.
SiriusC - 5/11/2012, 7:44 AM
I agree with ROBBEATZZZ. I'm all for the writers changing things here & there to adapt for film, but Fox has taken way too many liberties with their Marvel material.

But we are living in a new age considering what The Avengers showed what you can do when you follow the source material a little more faithfully. FC stinks.

I say just do it and bring in Apocalypse as the main villain?)
ralfinader - 5/11/2012, 7:48 AM
X3 was not good. And they will reboot rather than continue, someday, when this First Class crap has run it's course. Marvel and Disney will never get it back, not in any of our lifetimes.
Gigacrusher45 - 5/11/2012, 7:49 AM
Why the F don't they realize they set up Shadowking. I assume Prof X had to go through the Astral Plane to get to his new body therefore ShadowKing could use that as an opportunity to someone make his way to the actual world and start shit up. Not that I'm dieing for a sequel I'm just amazed they haven't noticed it.

But for now they need to concentrate on First Class 2 and a Deadpool movie.
xfan320 - 5/11/2012, 7:49 AM
I would say FC was an experiment, if it failed, than it was in continuity with singer's film...BUT because it was a hit, they are exploring that world now and will expand the 'retro-verse'.

By the time we have proper sequels, Fox/Matthew Vaughn/Marvel will have fixed any problems they had previously (biggest gripe being the lack of costumes and color/fun)
Fogs - 5/11/2012, 7:51 AM
Unfortunately I have no hopes that the X-Men rights will ever revert to Marvel Studios so I can only hope for the best on the Fox movies, disregarding my hate on the idea...

Hope good movies come our way anyhow. I wish they were by Marvel but...
marknjoanna - 5/11/2012, 7:51 AM
ditch the last stand and stay with 1st class till the reboot.but by all means keep that beat down on dc going ok marvel.
Kayo - 5/11/2012, 7:52 AM
Agree............APOCALYPSE OR MR. SINISTER for X-Men First Class 2
ralfinader - 5/11/2012, 7:52 AM
Gigacrusher45 - Why the F don't they realize they set up Shadowking.

Would love to see the First Class series touch on this. The only time Prof X showed any sense of power was in the beginning with Mystique, then he was a piece of furniture the rest of the movie. Seeing him explore the astral plane, showing his power more graphically, and losing all the crap mutant cameos, and I would be interested.
Fogs - 5/11/2012, 7:53 AM
Sinister in FC2 and Sentinels for FC3
Zombie137 - 5/11/2012, 7:54 AM
Wow, its been 6 years since that came out?
xfan320 - 5/11/2012, 7:55 AM
And a real biggy for them is to not rush magneto into the bad guy role. Personally, id want mr. Sinister harvesting mutants for Apocalypse to be revealed as the man pullin the strings for a third film maybe.
ironknight - 5/11/2012, 7:56 AM
If they come back and make another, it NEEDS to be Apocalypse.
MovieTheaterLad - 5/11/2012, 7:58 AM
Hatred sure are indeed hating. What else is new with these nerds?

Also, First Class is in continuity. Deal with it.

Now, as for this piece of news, there are endless possibilities and directions they can go with. Anyone who says otherwise has NO imagination.
Greengo - 5/11/2012, 7:58 AM
Saturated my ass!!!!
AlibiBreakfast - 5/11/2012, 7:59 AM
This movie was so bad. The scene where they pick out their names is one of the cheesiest in any comic book movie to date.
MovieTheaterLad - 5/11/2012, 8:00 AM
@ Fogs

It should be reversed, that way they can do the mutant massacre story with Gambit and Sinister for FC3.
mrHJK - 5/11/2012, 8:00 AM
I thought they stated a while back they had written X4&5 and they kind of went together..

FC2: Casandra Nova, Sentinels, Geonosha (the event that turns Magneto to terrorist)
FC3: Weapon X (tie in w/Origins)

X4: Sinister, Danger; return of Cyclops
X5: Apocolypse, (the real) Dark Pheonix

Make it so!
MovieTheaterLad - 5/11/2012, 8:03 AM

Alan Cumming didn't want to do X3. Don't blame Ratner.
Greengo - 5/11/2012, 8:05 AM
Brian Singer sucks cock

He was sooooo over rated as a director just because fans had been waiting soooo long for an X-Men live action movie that it was successful then we sat through that shit fest and where then "rewarded" with the Superman Returns travesty. -_-

felixxx - 5/11/2012, 8:07 AM
God I hope not. Let that crap ass series die. X1-pretty good, X2-was alright but not really impressive, X3- complete load of crap. Give it back to Marvel or reboot it.
Shaman - 5/11/2012, 8:07 AM
Take out Fassbender from FC and you don't even have a movie. The whole show was built on his back. FC's supporting cast was just sugar coated canon fodder (not to mention how shitty their intro montage was, making Cap's war montage look practically better than Rocky 4's training montage), Xavier was annoying as [frick] and Beast & Mystique were shoehorned. Hell, even Kevin Bacon hammed it up and he's one of my all time favorite actors. X2 on the other hand had everybody in it shine as well as have a purpose. THAT was a good X-Men film that actually gave us characters to care for. I sure as hell wish they'd continue with an X4 that when back to the good ol' X2 blueprint.
tazmaniak - 5/11/2012, 8:08 AM
How the hell do they still have him under contract when The Last Stand was released 6 years ago? How long do these things last?
Greengo - 5/11/2012, 8:09 AM
X2 was good.

Shaman - 5/11/2012, 8:12 AM
Greengo- "X2 was good."

Damn right, compared to the rest of the Xfilms AND Superman Returns, it practically looks like a fluke!
StrangerX - 5/11/2012, 8:15 AM
My hope is they use the New Mutants storyline for the follow up. I can see Fox mixing up the muties like they did in first class using Iceman and Kitty, but also add Cannonball and Wolfsbane to the mix.
Fogs - 5/11/2012, 8:16 AM
I also confirm Nomis' comment, although I think that's unlikely.
xfan320 - 5/11/2012, 8:17 AM
I think Sinister and apocalypse are really what this franchise needs right now. If they don't flip the villain-aspect on its head, than this is gonna get stale real quick (if not already!)

Honestly, I could see a killer film using sinister to bring in the x-men.element...magneto builds his Genosha...the human side starts developing sentinels...end with a sentinel assault on genosha and magneto having to save the x-mens ass/be the hero.

Really, x-men is a franchise just waiting for PROPER VISION and the immensity of powers to be truthfully represented in all the characters!!!
Shaman - 5/11/2012, 8:18 AM
StrangerX- Cannonball on the big screen would be a dream come true for me ;)
