X-MEN: DOFP: Peter Dinklage And Bryan Singer On 'Bolivar Trask' And Hitler Comparisons

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer discuss the similarities between Hitler and Bolivar Trask, as well as how the actor's size factors into the role. The former also recounts a sweet tale about Jennifer Lawrence...

"I wouldn't go so far as Hitler," Peter Dinklage told Empire Magazine in a recent interview when asked whether that real life dictator is a good comparison to the fictional X-Men: Days of Future Past villain, Bolivar Trask. "I sympathise with the man, having played him, and I don't know how one does that with Hitler...Trask does actually believe that what he's doing is going to save the world." However, the comparison to the Nazi leader is one that director Bryan Singer relates to, especially after the opening scene of X-Men an comparisons between the plight of the Jews and mutants in those two movies. "Trask is, ultimately, a peace lover. He feels that humanity will go on fighting each other unless they find some common element to unite against. Perhaps as Hitler used the Jews as a scapegoat to bond the darker parts of Europe, he's doing the same thing with mutants."

As for how Dinklage's size factors into his casting, Singer added: "I'm a huge fan of his. But there's also something interesting about his size. I'm sure he went very underestimated throughout life. Trask comments on that - I don't know if it'll be in the final picture - but he says, 'I was underestimated, so do not underestimate these creatures.'" That's a statement echoed by Dinklage, and it's here that the comparisons to Hitler once again come into play. As it turns out, Trask's size will definitely come into play in the movie. "I am this guy who's four and a half feet tall, but my life doesn't constantly address it. With me playing that role, I had to think about that stuff. I'm not going to play my violin, but with my dwarfism, I'm a bit of a mutant. I can't move metal or anything, but I thought of it as self-loathing. Deep down, Trask can be quite sensitive about that aspect of himself. And sorry to go back to Hitler, but he wasn't a six foot, perfect blond Aryan. He was a short, funny looking fellow. And talk about a moustache!"

Finally, in case you weren't already in love with American Hustle star Jennifer Lawrence, the Game of Thones star had another quirky tale to recount about the beautiful actress. "Jen Lawrence is quite a fan of Game of Thrones. She and her friend would grill me for information, then cover their ears saying they didn't want to hear any of it! I wasn't going to tell them anything anyway, but it was fun to play around..."

First time hearing or reading about any comparisons to Hitler.
TelaVizion - 2/2/2014, 5:57 AM
It's quite easy to see the comparisons to Hitler
DrDoom - 2/2/2014, 6:01 AM
Dat gif doe
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:02 AM
I bet Dinklage would give his right nut to go up on Jen Lawrence!
Hellsboy - 2/2/2014, 6:02 AM
That's a dumbass comparison I still have faith in this movie but singer annoys me a lot
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:06 AM
Trask is probably the character I'm looking forward to the most. Dinklage is incredibly talented, and he's gonna kill it.
batz11 - 2/2/2014, 6:06 AM
Really curious how this movie is gonna turn out...
SuperCat - 2/2/2014, 6:06 AM
McNyagano - 2/2/2014, 6:07 AM
Wait a damn minute, wasn't Trask a tall black guy in X-3? Wonder what happened there. :P
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:07 AM

"I" wouldn't have worked in the context of that sentence. "Someone" would be right, and "one" is just a shortening of that.
SuperCat - 2/2/2014, 6:08 AM
DrDoom - 2/2/2014, 6:08 AM

Fox happened
IUsedToBeThecase - 2/2/2014, 6:10 AM
All Dwarfs are bastards in their Father's eye. #GOT
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:13 AM

C'mon, there is real world precedent for people changing reces.

In the 80's, Michael Jackson was a black man. By 2005, he became a white woman, and by the time he died, he settled on being a purple skeleton.
TheDemonsHead - 2/2/2014, 6:17 AM
Can't wait for this movie, though I don't give two shits about what Singer has to say, lil dude is straight though I guess lol
Battabing - 2/2/2014, 6:22 AM
Singer still doesn't know what's going to be in the final movie?
Well then why are you telling us about it?
TheVirgin - 2/2/2014, 6:23 AM
Dinklage is badass! I would prefer Dinklage as Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg....pffft...
MexicanSuperman - 2/2/2014, 6:25 AM
@DrDoom, my thoughts exactly.

@NcNyagano, well it isn't like they called the Trask in The Lasd Stand by his first name. I don't know how common the name Trask is, but it can be someone unrelated or maybe DOFP's Trask likes him some foxxy black women and The Last Stand's Trask is his son.
MexicanSuperman - 2/2/2014, 6:29 AM
@Battabing, just that they are still editing, which every movie is doing including TASM 2 and CATWS, and this magazine was done about a month or two ago.
dethpillow - 2/2/2014, 6:30 AM
@coreyxyeroc - when does "I" ever serve as a replacement for "one"?
that doesn't even make sense. especially up there in his quote,
but when would that ever mean the same thing?

even using "you" is going to mean a different thing for the most part.
i think u just don't like when people say "one".

MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:30 AM
I want to post this as a preemptive rebuttal for all the Singer hate.

Directing credits

X2:XMen United
The Usual Suspects
Apt Pupil
House (pilot and Occam's Razor ep.)

Those are the good.

Superman Returns
Jack and the Giant Slayer

Those are the bad.

I left out TV movies and Public Access, because I have not seen any of them.

Singer has directed more good movies than bad movies. Why all the hate?
ekrolo2 - 2/2/2014, 6:33 AM

1) Hes not with Marvel Studios, 2) H doesnt just copy/paste everything from costumes, story-lines and dialogue from DA CLASSCIICCZZZ!!!! AKA the Holy Bible (to purist douchebags) and 3) Hes not with Marvel Studios.
dethpillow - 2/2/2014, 6:34 AM
one really mustn't traipse around having such reservations and prejudices.
one shouldn't hate one.
one thinks it's a bad idea, coreyxyeroc.
MovieTheaterLad - 2/2/2014, 6:35 AM

I had the same theory regarding Emma Frost having an affair with Tempest, and that's why we see her daughters in Origins, each with one of her powers.
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:37 AM

Very well put.

I guess we left out the homophobes though. Because him being gay explains everything.
MexicanSuperman - 2/2/2014, 6:40 AM
@MercwithMouth, I just saw Jack the Giant Slayer for the first time last weak, and I thought it was a decent family movie. I think a lot of people who hate that movie is because they haven't seen it and then go by what over people have said about it.
dethpillow - 2/2/2014, 6:41 AM
@ekrolo2 - why no hate for Vaughn then? does he cut and paste everything from the Bible?
how about....Sam Raimi?cut and paster? what about working for Marvel?
i thought that's how u manage to escape hate these days? they don't work for Marvel. Zak Snyder doesn't work for Marvel. Chris Nolan either.
that's weird.

maybe that's not it then. maybe it's cuz Singer has a nose?
let's see, no wait, Vaughn has a nose...Raimi, Snyder, Nolan too. all have noses. so it's not that.

what if it's his name? what if your name is the same as a sewing machine, then people hate u? let's see...
dethpillow - 2/2/2014, 6:44 AM
@MercwithMouth - oh wait, he's homosexual... yeah, that accounts for some of it i suppose. people are weird about that with him.
i don't think it accounts for all of it tho.
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:45 AM
Thanks fangz. Lol.

I just think most Singer haters have never seen anything he's done outside of CBM's.
ezio619 - 2/2/2014, 6:48 AM
i havent watched game of thrones but my uncles have and they love it though i have seen clips of it and he seems awesome in that.i think he is gonna be a great villain though i dont know how much screentime he will actually have
DrunkenNukem - 2/2/2014, 6:50 AM
Maybe if Singer stop it with the lies...and the attitude of think of himself better over everybody else .....

He could be a great politician: pathological liar, oportunitist, Self-righteousness, doesnt take a fault for anything (state of denial).

Yep Singer for Texas Gob!!
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:51 AM

The gay part always makes me laugh.

It's like people forget that Sir Ian McKellan is gay, and treat him like a god for Gandalf and Magneto.
It's like people forget that Neil Patrick Harris is gay, and he's obviously a god(Barney is my hero).
It's like people forget that Jim Parsons is gay, and mom Big Bang Theory is awesome.

I just don't get it.
McNyagano - 2/2/2014, 6:51 AM

Zack Snyder, Marc Webb, Sam Raimi, Chris Nolan are not with Marvel Studios. Like somebody else pointed out, why is there no hate for Matthew Vaughn? What are you playing at bro? I hate it when people think the hate Singer gets is because he's not with the MCU or doesn't stay true to the source material. All the directors of CBMs have strayed away from the source material, but it's the degree at which you stray away from the source material. Unless you read X-Men comics, you'll never understand the frustration of the die hard X-Men fans.
DrunkenNukem - 2/2/2014, 6:51 AM
I dont care any sexual atractions of anybody....that´s personal...

What i care about is someone talking shit and think that people will believe it like if were stupid
DrunkenNukem - 2/2/2014, 6:54 AM
You guys like Singer movies..cool...but don´t try to defend the guy and make him some victim here because his not..

MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:54 AM

What? Who in show business doesn't lie?
And find me a director that doesn't think their work is better than most. I'm sure that Nolan believes he could make better Marvel movies than Marvel Studios does. I'm sure that Whedon thinks he could do a better XMen. It's normal. All directors have their own vision, and most see it as the right vision. They all think they're the Pope.
dethpillow - 2/2/2014, 6:55 AM
well u know as far as him currently working on an X-Men film...
if u don't like his other X-Men films, or certain things about them, and then u see that maybe those things are happening again...
that's pretty much reason enough to not want him doing this one, and to be annoyed with him in general.

but if you really mean 'hate', well that's another thing. even if all his movies were bad, hate's a pretty strong word if that's what you're seriously asking about. i think the homosexual thing for some reason makes people express their dislike for him more. even things like people will insult him on his looks. weird. that part is so weird.
Dan Slott gets it for being fat. cuz that has so much to do with writing a comic book. women get it for everything.
it's just ridiculous. i agree with u guys about that part all of that.
especially women. check out when they're under any kind of scrutiny, the kind of things people think are ok to say in regards to them. really bizarre.
men are terrified of sex is what it comes down to a lot. men are in the position to lose everything, so i guess they get kind testy and bitchy about that stuff. they know there's no way out alive. no way to win.
u can't steal love. can't keep it either.

but back to Singer, one other thing with him, is he's kinda deluded and i think annoying in interviews. not all directors do so many interviews. lots of directors know better than to do interviews. cuz they turn people off to wanting to know more about the movies they're working on.

MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:55 AM

Singer's not a victim at all. But people always conveniently forget all the good work he's done.
MercwithMouth - 2/2/2014, 6:58 AM

And all of us here swallow rumors like it's fine whisky. We all live and breathe it, it's why we're on this site everyday. If someone wasn't spewing rumors, we would bitch and complain that there's no new info on this movie, or that movie.
dethpillow - 2/2/2014, 6:59 AM
@mercwithmouth - well i wouldn't say that i'm a hater of him, and i'm actually excited about this film, especially after that article about action scenes. :)
that one they mentioned with Colossus and Sentinels just sounds rad.

but i could imagine being mistaken for a 'hater' you know? cuz i hate that he's directing this and not someone else. haha. but yeah, you're right i've not seen any of his films besides X-Men and Superman.
but see don't u think that having seen his X-Men films and Superman, isn't that enough to go by, cuz he's doing an X-Men film now?
i mean i don't have to know his whole everything about the guy.

i am excited about it tho. :)
