X-MEN: DOFP Writer On Why Logan, Not Kitty, Was Chosen To Go Back To The Past

While talking to Total Film, Simon Kinberg outlines why the decision was made pretty early on to have Wolverine go back to try to stop the human/mutant war from ever beginning, and not Kitty Pryde like in the source comics. Read on for more.

"Well of course it was Wolverine! All of these movies are just Wolverine movies!" etc etc. Yes, Hugh Jackman's mutant berserker has been the primary protagonist (every movie needs one folks) in all but one of the X-Men movies so far, and will likely continue to be until he gives up playing the role. But, although Simon Kinberg admits that his popularity was a factor, there was a much more logical reason why Logan was chosen to go back to the past in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and not Kitty Pryde. Turns out they did think of Miss Pryde first, but from the beginning it was always the plan to send only the consciousness and not the character's actual body back..and that really limited their options.

"We made the decision for a lot of reasons, some of them obvious and some of them more nuanced, to make it Wolverine who goes back in time. One reason is that he's the protagonist of the franchise, and probably the most beloved character to a mass audience. Probably the bigger reason is that when we started thinking about the logistical realities of Kitty's consciousness being sent back in time, to her younger self, as opposed to her physical body being sent back..it was impossible. Obviously in the book it's Kitty..but you're talking about an actress (Ellen Page) who, in the age of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, would have been negative 20 years old. So we started thinking again, and the first reflex response to that was a character who doesn't age. Wolverine is the only character who would looks the same in 1973 as he does in the future."

ManofSteel23 - 12/2/2013, 9:49 AM
and if they wanted cyclops back, they could of done it like someone goes back in time to the point where scott was ''killed'', and instead of him being killed, someone saved him and brough him to the future, because there was never a body
ATrueHero1987 - 12/2/2013, 9:50 AM

A hooker once paid yossarian for sex. He gave her the 5 finger discount
NeoBaggins - 12/2/2013, 9:54 AM
That's some pretty legit bullshit. I can dig it. And they come right out and say he's the face man of the franchise.

I think Page could have held her own, but it's a good excuse to site Wolvy's age factor as the catalyst.
redlion - 12/2/2013, 9:54 AM
Because Wolverine is the most popular character in the X-men franchise, no biggie. It's the same reason that Tony Stark/IM is going to be responsible for having input into creating Ultron.
SageMode - 12/2/2013, 9:56 AM
What a bullshit excuse.

If age was a problem why didn't Xavier mind travel back then? Or Magneto? Or both? Problem solved.
Bl00dwerK - 12/2/2013, 10:00 AM
Wolvie brings in the bucks. Nuff said...
Bucky - 12/2/2013, 10:03 AM
Wolverine is the most beloved character in X-Men, and has been for a long time before and outside of the movies. Sending him back in time makes sense for so many reasons, I don't even think its something they needed to explain.

IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:04 AM
I don't mind the switch. Fox pushes wolverine anyway but I still wanna smash kitty
YoungThanos - 12/2/2013, 10:05 AM
They did it because they have no faith in the other X-men characters. Which is the reason most people have lost faith in FOX and just want the rights reverted.

Singer's lame mind meld solution don't help. Xavier has never displayed this type of power. And why not just send it to himself???

Either way it sounds cheap and I'm certain this franchise will continue to under-perform as usual.
Bucky - 12/2/2013, 10:07 AM

You didn't enjoy this!?

IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:08 AM
I'm still sore there is no NightCrawler. Xmen 2 still the best IMO
Joementum - 12/2/2013, 10:08 AM
Someone else needs to take the lead in future films. Wolverine should only have cameos on team films and focus on his solo stories.

But who should take the lead?

My choices
3.Kitty and Colossus
4.Nathan Summers
IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:08 AM
@maniac great scene. The White House scene is better though
RorMachine - 12/2/2013, 10:10 AM
It has nothing to do with "having faith" in other characters. Guys, whether you want to admit it or not, Wolverine is and always has been -- even before the movies -- the most popular X-Man. Your PERSONAL favorite X-Man? maybe not..but he was always going to be the choice to lead these movies, and that's that. They began with Logan in the driver's seat, the movies make money, they continue that way. I don't think they give too much of a flying [frick] that some fanboys would rather see a Husk centric movie.
IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:12 AM
Ror is correct. Hate it or love it,Wolverine is the fan fav.
lntrn8 - 12/2/2013, 10:15 AM
why hugh?

Battabing - 12/2/2013, 10:15 AM
Why do they even try to bullshit us? These movies are all about how much everyone except Wolverine sucks.

We've all accepted that.
Nomis - 12/2/2013, 10:16 AM
He is he Older but he don't have better hair than me!

redlion - 12/2/2013, 10:17 AM
@ OmegaDaGod
That would definitely be cool. We've seen team fights before on film in X3, etc., but nothing like the sheer pandemonium and chaos that's in the comics. I would love for MOE to show up in an Avengers film.
IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:18 AM
Lol nommy
Nomis - 12/2/2013, 10:19 AM
@ IM53 - What's up? Long time. :)
FantasticSpidey - 12/2/2013, 10:20 AM
At this point in the FOX fiasco known as the X-Men films... I'm really bewildered that people are so optimistic about these films.

Aside from X2 being good back when it was released (mostly because X1 was boring, and X2 was infinitely better by comparison), and First Class being mostly good (should have been a full reboot and no Angel Salvatore or Kevin Bacon), these films are a far cry from the level of quality that Marvel Studios or even Sony have put forth.

Maybe it's just optimism about the potential of the film being good? But nothing that has been shown yet really makes me think that this one will be any different.

- Weak-ass Sentinel pics.
- Bringing back the old cast including Halle Berry
- Horrible inconsistencies in the time line.

About the only thing making this a watch are Fassbender, McAvoy and Dinklage. And the possibility of a larger and more badass Sentinel.

I certainly hope it will be good. But that seems to be why everyone says it will "rock" or "own" 2014 CBMs. Hope. But hope that something will be good does not equal something being good.

examples are as follows:
- X3, Wolverine Origins
- Star Wars Episodes 1-3
- Superman Returns
- Green Lantern
- Spider-Man 3
- Iron Man 3
CorndogBurglar - 12/2/2013, 10:21 AM
I can actually appreciate this way of thinking. It makes sense and it sounds like they are actually trying to fix the things that First Class messed up.

For instance, in First Class, we see a young Scott Summers playing baseball as a small kid (maybe 10 years old?), the first time they use Cerebro. That movie was in the 60's. Are we to believe that Cyke was in his mid 40's, early 50's in the X-Men films?? Of course he wasn't.

And that is the kind of thing that really irritates me. At least this explanation doesn't create any more problems like that and makes sense.

I feel like if the people that made First Class made this, then they just would have said, "You know what? Who cares if Kitty wasn't born yet back then? Lets do it anyway!"
TheRealRemyLebeau - 12/2/2013, 10:21 AM
Hahahahaha XMDOFP won't own 2014!!!

Terrible lazy excuse. So many characters they could have used. How about cyclops older brother (never was older) havok! You make characters into fan favorites with writing and directorial skills. Smdh.
WruceBayne - 12/2/2013, 10:23 AM
They sent Wolverine back instead of Kitty because this movie is called "Wolverine 6 featuring cameos from the xmen". "First class" did so well because it wasn't centered around Wolverine.
Bucky - 12/2/2013, 10:23 AM
I present to you Jean Grey, Queen of Destruction Porn.

IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:24 AM
Much going on brother, but I'm back in action here. Look foward to convos and random awesome here dude. Cheers
IM53 - 12/2/2013, 10:26 AM
