Only One New Character For X-Men: First Class Sequel?

Only One New Character For X-Men: First Class Sequel?

Speaking more about his plans for a possible sequel, Mathew Vaughn reveals that if one were to happen , only ONE new character would be introduced. The director doesn't say who, but does give hints..

Vaughn seems very confident that a sequel to First Class will happen, and why shouldn't he be? Although the official reviews will not hit until tomorrow, the reactions have been extremely positive so far. In the article below you can read about his plans for a (possible) opening scene, now speaking exclusively to Movieweb he reveals that he would be bringing in a new character too, but only one!. Oh, and while talking about this character Vaughn reveals a pretty big SPOILER: about another one from the movie..

"We will only have one more new character. I won't say who he...I won't say who he or she is! But we will only be bringing one more new character in. Because, I think, as Professor X is in a wheelchair, Magneto needs to have a nemesis he can fight with. Someone that will be his equal. I know who it is. It would be nice if I could say something, but I can't, mate!

Now, from this we can deduce that said character would be working WITH Xavier, and be powerful enough to go toe to toe with Magneto. We know it can't be Wolverine(unless there is some SERIOUS retconning done). So who? Guesses below! Vaughn also doesn't rule out the possibility of either Ian McKellen or Patrick Stewart appearing for flash forward scenes, saying..

"I have worked with Sir Ian McKellen before, and he is a lovely guy. I would love to work with him again. So, never say never!"

Of course, all of this is subject to change, a sequel is likely but who knows what direction it will be taking by the time it goes into production.

Huh, not sure how to feel about this. Magneto having someone to take on would of course be very cool, but I would have thought introducing a few new mutants on BOTH side would be a must...guess it'll depend how interesting the current bunch are!
Dynamo - 5/24/2011, 11:50 AM
It'll probably either a young Jean Grey or Cyclops.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/24/2011, 11:54 AM
En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister, Shadow King or Black Tom Cassidy!:)

Or Storm, Jean Grey or Cyclops.
marvel72 - 5/24/2011, 11:54 AM
so none of the original five,oh thats just f*ckin awesome news.
Hellsing - 5/24/2011, 11:55 AM
Jean Grey's the only I can think of thats powerful enough, pretty sure Fox will force him to pick another character, the rosters pretty small which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

RorMachine - 5/24/2011, 12:07 PM
Actually could be anyone guys. By..

Putting Xavier in the chair at the end of this film he has already done away with the events of the third one, and by all accounts that's not the only thing that gets rebooted. You could very well see one of the original team.

Hellsing - 5/24/2011, 12:11 PM
@RorMachine yeah thats what I was thinking if the movie is a success wouldn't be surprised if they decide to just call this a reboot.
GillytheKid33 - 5/24/2011, 12:12 PM
Probs Jean. Which is no fun. If that happens itll be a chick based movie. I aint pumped anymore!
luckylu - 5/24/2011, 12:13 PM
LeeShard - 5/24/2011, 12:14 PM

No to a sequel.
supercajun - 5/24/2011, 12:15 PM
It would be Polaris, she can go toe to toe with him because they have similar powers.
Xandera - 5/24/2011, 12:16 PM
I'd say Cyclops FTW!

Guys, check out the Fourteenth Sub-chapter of WHITE FIRE... Shadow Blood!

White Fire
luckylu - 5/24/2011, 12:17 PM
so its official. i will not watch first class in theaters.
zmikey - 5/24/2011, 12:17 PM
I could see it being a child Jean, 'cause if Magneto really did go evil and stuff by the end of the film, that means Jean's already at the mansion (as he helped recruit her). And by the end of the film, Xavier has to put mental blocks in her brain to stop the Phoenix
RedeyeJedi - 5/24/2011, 12:20 PM
I would like to see Gambit done the right way, and I think he could pose at least some threat to Magneto.
SamHell - 5/24/2011, 12:22 PM
Im thinking Cyclops, but Magneto can take him down
IDK ,but they need to do Cyclops right cuz the nimrods running the last 3 flicks sure didnt do him justice, ya know
CherryBomb - 5/24/2011, 12:24 PM

Mr Sinister ... although I think his character will be too confusing for the movies. So possible Apocalypse, but ret-conned
CherryBomb - 5/24/2011, 12:25 PM

This sucks.
The main reason I watch these X-Movies is for the new characters they introduce in each instalment, it keeps it more fun and less boring.
bigshow2312 - 5/24/2011, 12:26 PM
So, we cant have the preliminary relationship of THE XMen?

Maybe how Beast got into politics?

If you cant then just

The series

YeaOkYea - 5/24/2011, 12:26 PM
I say Sinister will be the villain.
SamHell - 5/24/2011, 12:27 PM
I find these abundance of ads disturbing
TheHierophant - 5/24/2011, 12:28 PM
I know most didn't like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," but I think Taylor Kitsch did a decent job as Gambit. But, the role seemed like a rush job. Like they casted at last minute and didn't give Kitsch enough time to prepare...
CaptainAmerica - 5/24/2011, 12:29 PM
How does this mean no Cyclops or Jean Grey? He says only 1 NEW characters, Cyclops wouldn't be a new character neither would any of the other original members.
HBOMB83 - 5/24/2011, 12:35 PM
Polaris and Mr. Sinister make sense. None of the other characters yal have mentioned could possibly be a choice. Wolverine, Gambit, Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Iceman, Angel, Shadow King, Apocalypse, or Black Tom could never be an option.
StevilNYC - 5/24/2011, 12:40 PM
It has to be either Cable or Bishop so they can fix the F'd up timeline.
supert - 5/24/2011, 12:41 PM
I think you guys are interpreting his answer a little incorrectly.

I think he means not literally, that there will only be one new character in the entire sequel. I think he means that since Hellfire Club will clearly be incapacitated in this film, and Professor X is in a wheelchair by the end, that there needs to be a new villain for Magneto and Prof. X to face off against, since it can't be against each other.

So it sounds like they are going to introduce a new villain that can keep up with Magneto in the second film. So there will be one new third party, or villain, but there will still probably be more X-Men characters introduced to the team.
Yourdaddydevilandlord - 5/24/2011, 12:41 PM
The new character will be Halle Berry's Oscar statue, out to unleash more unrational, chaotic havok on the world!!!! Then, at the end, Prof. X will telepathically project a video of Catwoman and X-3 into the Oscars mind, and it will see the error of its evil ways and repent.
Yourdaddydevilandlord - 5/24/2011, 12:42 PM
Or Barakapool.
MassExecutions - 5/24/2011, 12:42 PM
What about Cable?
SonOfStarKiller - 5/24/2011, 12:43 PM

Since Singer had no involvement, I believe this X-Men movie doesn't acknowledge X3 or the Wolverine film. Much like Superman returns didn't acknowledge any superman movie after Superman 2. If it's looked at it in that perspective suddenly much, if not all the continuity problems go away.
LMFA0 - 5/24/2011, 12:44 PM
Well he stuttered when he said "he" and changed it to he or she so I'm guessing it will be a male. That means Jean and polarrus won't be in it by just looking at that. So it could be cyclops but how? I mean he was in his early thirties in the original movies so he would have been born in the seventies.
Yourdaddydevilandlord - 5/24/2011, 12:44 PM
Actually the Cable/Bishop idea isn't bad, Cable comes back and stops X-3 from being made so his Dad doesn't die, and isn't such a whiny douche. That or he begs Jean to bang Wolverine instead so he can be his Dad.
Smudge - 5/24/2011, 12:48 PM
They should have the first class films build up to a deadpool movie, through the first class movies they could introduce cable.
Hannibal_King - 5/24/2011, 12:49 PM
I'd love to see Cyclops go up against Magneto in the XFC sequel.
Finally us fans could see Cyclops given his worth in the X-Men films.
Fogs - 5/24/2011, 12:50 PM
Maybe Quicksilver? Won't confront him with powers, but Magneto won't mess with his own son.
Moakynubs - 5/24/2011, 12:52 PM
I think by "fight with" he means somebody that can match Magneto's leadership and charisma, not a real physical fight, since Magneto would wreck Prof X in a fight any day. So Cyclops seems like a likely option (Maybe that's just because I love Cyclops). I don't know Havok works in to that... They said only one new character, not that all the others were staying, right?

And the first movie isn't even out yet, I'm sure that anything we're hearing about a sequel is just an idea. Ideas change.
marvelguy - 5/24/2011, 1:12 PM
He may just mean the new character will cause Magneto to choose his path that parts with Xavier.

Options would be Sinister, Apocalypse, Shadow King, or possibly the likes of Shiva, Stryker, the Sentinels/their creator, or a rogue element within the government.
marvel72 - 5/24/2011, 1:17 PM
cable or bishop are the only two that can sort out this shitfest.
Trey - 5/24/2011, 1:25 PM
It should be Gambit, Bryan Singer showed his name in X2 but never showed him, X3 he was supposed to be in but im glad he wasn't and he was only okay in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Just reintroduce him and make him as badass as he should be.
