Bryan Singer Talks About His Role In X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Director Bryan Singer doesn't think he's two films removed from the X-Men franchise, considering he wrote First Class and was instrumental in the film's casting. The director also continues to tease the multiple timelines that will be present in the film.

Talking to Crave Online, Bryan Singer talks about his behind the scenes role in the X-Men franchise since directing X2.

Singer talks about his involvement with X-Men: First Class and dismisses the notion that he's picking up the pieces left by Matthew Vaughn. Singer says he's been involved in the X-Men all along.
Singer: It would be [weird to direct Days of Future Past] if I didn’t write the story for X-Men: First Class. I wrote the story to that movie and I produced it and I was instrumental in the casting, in design and involved in the post-production, so I was part of that movie. I initiated that movie and originated it so in that way, and worked with Matthew and I was the one who actually hired Matthew so in a way I feel like I’m not completely entering someone else’s franchise. I’m entering one that he executed wonderfully, but one that I was also part of.

Singer makes a comparison to the Aliens franchise, where multiple directors have helmed different entries.
Singer: It would be different if I was doing a sequel to Star Trek where somebody else cast everybody, somebody else designed it, somebody else created a look and a mood and a story and then I’m just coming in, which can be done. James Cameron did it beautifully with [his sequel to] Alien but it’s just a different thing. I’m returning to my [world]. The only thing that will be a unique and exciting thing for me is I get to finally direct Jennifer Lawrence. I’ve already directed Nicholas Hoult, but Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, who are phenomenal actors, and I get to work with them as a director as opposed to producer.

The director continues to tease the multiple timelines and his desire to address a few continuity issues.
Singer: Yes, that’s the answer to your question [on is this the X-Men 3 Singer wanted to do and will this film 'fix' things]. And a lot more because this combines the stories and the casts of both X-Men: First Class and my original X-Men films, so I get to do a little bit of that kind of fun stuff, but I also get to do a lot more. It’s a very epic story. It takes place in multiple times and a crazy, crazy cast.

This movie will be [frick]ing EPIC!
marvelman64 - 2/23/2013, 7:30 AM
I think Singer is just jealous that he didn't direct First Class.
Christuffer - 2/23/2013, 7:38 AM
Even though this is good news, I still feel like the X-Men movies are hopelessly lost
nach1wan - 2/23/2013, 7:41 AM
if it works, it could be really awesome
Superspecialawesomeguy - 2/23/2013, 7:48 AM
God I hope this works.
Spideyguy94 - 2/23/2013, 7:48 AM
The X-Men have the potential to be bigger than the Avengers, and as someone who is more of an X-Men fan than Avengers fan i hope it does one day though i doubt it.
superotherside - 2/23/2013, 7:50 AM
Yeah, we might actually get a great Fox-men film this time! YAY!

Wait... what?

:P
gambgel - 2/23/2013, 7:51 AM
multiple times? thats new to me
I thought it was gonna be just two timelines, past (70's) and future. But if he will adress more than two timelines, mmm, that will open the door to new and cool things and of course, certain characters. Interesting, Singer
40oz - 2/23/2013, 7:54 AM
If we get production stills and set photos as often as this guy talks about this movie, we will be able to see the movie frame by frame before it comes out.
marvel72 - 2/23/2013, 7:57 AM
so singer wrote & produced x-men first class but he couldn't see all the continuity f*ck ups he was creating with the previous films.

i've just got a little worried for days of future past,as long as it features 25 ft sentinels & the original cast members it may be good.
40oz - 2/23/2013, 8:02 AM
@Marve72, good point. He wrote and produced First class, yet he states that he is going to fix all the continuity errors? Lol, he created them!
deamon - 2/23/2013, 8:04 AM
All changes in past creates new timelines.
deamon - 2/23/2013, 8:05 AM
X2 was better than any Marvel movie.
Gulon180 - 2/23/2013, 8:09 AM
he better do something after his latest flop.
Spidey31 - 2/23/2013, 8:12 AM
This movie is gonna be good
JoeMomma29 - 2/23/2013, 8:15 AM
Here is one scene they are putting into the movie!

Spidey31 - 2/23/2013, 8:16 AM
I wish DD stayed at fox, they would've made a better DD movie
JoeMomma29 - 2/23/2013, 8:16 AM
Lets hope this movie does not end up like Jack and Giant whatever!

ATrueHero1987 - 2/23/2013, 8:20 AM
I'm starting to get excited interested in this movie. More than The Wolverine anyway. I concur with @marvel72 statement though. I know one thing though either this movie needs a new release date or the third Hobbit movie release date needs to change. Other wise, this movie may be in trouble.
OrgasmicPotatoe - 2/23/2013, 8:27 AM
I'm just getting more and more excited for this movie. It has the potential to be goddamn epic, and it has the director of the two best X-Men movies yet (although First Class isn't far behind). Bring it on !
ComicBookGoth - 2/23/2013, 8:28 AM
i hope this works.

still didn't like this douche being in first class insted of cyke.

Taboggon - 2/23/2013, 8:38 AM
I've always thought the X-men franchise could be HUGE, bigger than Avengers even, but it needs a clean slate and a fresh start.
Carl - 2/23/2013, 8:45 AM
I want whatever levitikuz is smoking.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 2/23/2013, 8:48 AM
what i want is more powers on display, more battles, wolverine being a [frick]ing badass not a sissy boy, magneto wrecking shit, storm being a sexy african queen, cajun ass gambit (my favorite as a cajun jew myself) and maybe a homage to the classic x-men suits.

levitikuz

i don't think you want people cumming at you :P
but i agree, it has potential to be [frick]ing great or outright suck.
marvel72 - 2/23/2013, 8:51 AM
@ taboggon

exactly,i'm a way bigger fan of the x-men comic books than the avengers but the avengers movie is better than all of the x-men movies.

to be a contender they need to reboot the franchise & follow the comics a bit more,if you call a movie x-men first class at least have the original five x-men in it up against magneto.

you can tell whatever original story you like as long as you keep the line up as close to the source as possible.
sinsear912 - 2/23/2013, 8:51 AM
The reason xmen movies always suck is because unlike the avengers movies, fox seems to think they need a main star. Avengers gave everybody their time to shine.
marvel72 - 2/23/2013, 8:58 AM
@ sinsear912

i agree, the screen time difference between wolverine & cyclops is terrible considering cyclops is meant to the leader.
CharlesTheIncredible - 2/23/2013, 8:59 AM
marvel72 has an excellent point...
sKeemAn - 2/23/2013, 9:45 AM
Lets pray he can fix the mess of Xmen trilogy. As much as I'm tired of hearing him, I'm starting to believe he can pull it off
NightAvenger - 2/23/2013, 9:49 AM
I cannot wait for this movie.
Shamo - 2/23/2013, 9:52 AM
theirs only 2 directors with 3 good CBM's under thier belt. Singer and Nolan.

In Singer we Trust.
Newbus - 2/23/2013, 10:00 AM
sinsear912 - "The reason xmen movies always suck is because unlike the avengers movies, fox seems to think they need a main star. Avengers gave everybody their time to shine."

And this is why I just don't think he can handle so many big names in one film. He'll put the 'it' crowd Fassbender, Hoult, Lawrence and Jackman in the front and everyone else will get shafted.

There's lots of potential in DOFP but Singer will just not get it.
luckylu - 2/23/2013, 10:11 AM
costumes, sentinels, and cyclops as the badass leader he is and i may just see this movie.
genx13 - 2/23/2013, 10:42 AM
Anybody who think the Bryan singer men movies are any good is an idiot and is retarded All four movies was all garbage. The 90’s Xmen cartoon was better than does sorry ass movies. The only reason they are now doing a movies with Sentinels. Because of how much money the Avengers made.
StrawberryAlarmclock - 2/23/2013, 10:55 AM
He didn't "Write" First Class. It was written by Zack Stentz, Ashley Miller, Jane Goldman & Mathew Vaughn. They wrote the script based on Singer's treatment & story. It was Singer's ideal to have the film focus on Charles and Eric and have cuban missle backdrop story. You can blame Havoc, Emma Frost and all the other continuity issues on the writers and producers and the director.(I love how no one blames Vaughn)so to say Singer cares sooo much about the franchise but made even more mistakes with First Class is retarded. DOFP will own and will shut up all the haters just like "FIST ASS" did. History is repeating itself.
Superguy15 - 2/23/2013, 11:00 AM
FIRST CLASS seemed like the Marvel Studios reboot of X-MEN to me...
Shamo - 2/23/2013, 11:01 AM
@genx, what does the Avengers have to do with Sentinels? and techinically, this won't be the Sentinels 1st appearence.
deamon - 2/23/2013, 11:09 AM
Anybody who think X1 or X2 were bad is dumb hater as genx13.
Fogs - 2/23/2013, 11:14 AM
First class was a solid movie, but imo it doesn't pass the test of multiple viewings, I keep forwarding to the Fassbender appearances and that's it. The ending was really bad with that unnecessary bullet destroying the continuity.

X-Men have so much potential. They should put some effort on approaching the comic version a little bit.
RaleighAntrobus - 2/23/2013, 11:28 AM
Whoa... He WROTE First Class!?!?? He must REALLY hate X-Men then.
RaleighAntrobus - 2/23/2013, 11:35 AM
EDIT: Nevermind. He didn't write the script for First Class. Singer's heart seems to be in the right place but so much damage has been done that I'm not sure it's repairable.

And damn, if only they treated First Class like the origin film it should have been than a lot of this wouldn't be so difficult.
shadearts - 2/23/2013, 11:49 AM
So no wonder xmen first class stofy was fricked up by having random.characters like havok others thats weren't even part of the real first class
ralfinader - 2/23/2013, 12:20 PM
All these announcements, tweets, casting news, and still nobody confirmed a script beyond an 8-page outline. That is not that inspiring. At least he is sharing the blame for the last X-movie. I have way more faith that Wolverine will be better than this mashed together mutant-fest, and that ain't much after Origins left that bad taste in my brain.
Azazel1 - 2/23/2013, 12:55 PM
First Class was really good, not perfect, but a pretty damn good movie.

So [frick]ing glad Marvel doesn't have rights to the X-men....
Fabius - 2/23/2013, 12:55 PM
Cool it was so many times that we haven't read "singer talks..." , I like U. Good director, but please Brian [frick]ing quiet only one month and do you're movie better than U can. After that U will can talk again.
But don't worry, just can't wait to see the results of XMEN DOFP !
TerminalVoyd - 2/23/2013, 1:09 PM
@marvel72

While Singer (and Jaimie Moss) did write the first version of First Class, he's not responsible for any continuity screw-ups. Once Matthew Vaughn entered the picture, he and Jane Goldman did a major ground up rewrite of the film, keeping the basic story that Singer concocted but making it very much their own film.

Had it been a Singer/Moss written film, as Singer envisioned when he was going to direct the movie, I suspect it would have been a lot more streamlined continuity-wise.

@marvelman64

I don't think he sounds so much jealous as regretful about it. He was so close to coming back and then WB yanked his leash on Jack The Giant Slayer (then Killer) deciding it needed more development and that was that. Luckily he was able to bring Matthew Vaughn back into the fold and unlike X3, was able to talk Vaughn into staying when he walked for a second time early in the negotiations.
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/23/2013, 1:23 PM
I like how he said Matthew Vaughan executed it properly, I hope he does too. I loved the xmen and this movie world. I hope he does it right so that I can forget about X3.
Jollem - 2/23/2013, 1:57 PM
i wanna see some bishop and cable action

all new x-men. *squee*
ToddDamian - 2/23/2013, 2:10 PM
Gonna be a good one.
Jer3miah - 2/23/2013, 2:15 PM
So, he wrote First Class, eh? Hmm... I'll give him super kudos for such a beautifully-crafted film. In fact, the film is near perfect, except with one major drawback... A racial undertone. "Mutant and Proud" is set conveniently during the time "Black and Proud" existed, and is a direct slap in the face. Especially since the Equality Black movement was occurring around the same time. I guess Singer is to blame for that...
