Well, it sounds like we may soon be heading back to Free City as Ryan Reynolds has revealed that Disney has already approached him about a possible follow-up to his acclaimed action-comedy Free Guy!

Well, today is no longer a good day, it's a great day because Ryan Reynolds has announced that Walt Disney Studios is keen on developing a sequel to his critically acclaimed action-comedy Free Guy, which opened in theaters yesterday and is already exceeding box office tracking with a projected $26 million opening.

He writes, "Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo! #irony.

Director Shawn Levy responded to the news with a big, "Yuuuuuuuup," so it seems likely he'll be back to helm the follow-up whenever it heads into production. It's still too early for casting news, but expect Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi to also reprise their roles.

Free Guy is currently boasting an 81% Certified Fresh certification review aggregator RottenTomatoes and has also earned a rare "A" CinemaScore, which makes it one of the best-received films of the year.

As for when a sequel could hypothetically begin production, Reynolds has already wrapped both Red Notice and The Adam Project (also with Levy) for Netflix and is currently filming the musical comedy Spirited. He's also been tapped to star in Everyday Parenting Tips and Clue, although the development status on those remains TBD, and he has been heavily rumored to begin production on Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 at some point next year. So, it seems like a potential Free Guy sequel may not roll cameras until 2023, at the earliest, barring any unforeseen developments.

That MCU cameo was great.

It was a fun movie, not sure where they'd go for a sequel though

That literally contradicts the overall theme of the movie, so a sequel would make them sellouts lol. They even bring to light how Hollywood only wants reboots or sequels, but money is money haha. Ryan Reynolds should stop playing himself in literally every movie, even if he's great

@bobevanz - If it works, why change it? See also Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson 🤷🏽‍♂️

Looks like Free Guy will be opening above projections to a $25 - $26m haul! Same amount as TSS, so good news for Mr. Reynolds!

Speaking of TSS, reports are saying it’s looking at a 70% - 72% drop this weekend, ouch!

@Jordanstine -
Thanks to HBO Max.

@Battabing -

Can you really make that claim when F9 dropped 67% and Snake Eyes dropped 69%? Neither of those films had streaming options day and date and they dropped hard, just like most films have this summer.

I feel like it's more that there is a finite amount of people willing to go to the theaters right now and most of them just don't go back a second time regardless of streaming options.

Nothing's making big money theatrically for a while, especially since Delta hasn't even peaked yet

Guess those guys were frontloaded compared to TSS where you have the option from day one to stay home.

Guess I should watch this then if the reactions are indeed as positive as I'm hearing/reading.

Haven’t seen it yet. But as with most comedic sequels, as long as they can keep or expand on the charm without getting too cocksure about what worked (and subsequently overdoing that), why not?

I’d watch a sequel. But not if they are gonna shoehorn in Disney property stuff to pat themselves on the back. That part was embarrassing

@Twenty23Three - weird cus everyone talks about how much they liked the chris evans cameo

Might check it out later. But this is really showing that movies need to go straight to theaters from now on.

@Origame - No, what it shows is that its hit or miss and miss is MUCH worse than it was before covid. It seems like you are hit or flop and not much in the middle. There used to be a middle. Seriously, we used to have one and now......pfffft, nuttin'.
Origame
Origame - 8/14/2021, 4:46 PM
@JDL - are you seriously telling me it's just a coincidence that the one movie that's a success here is the one that didn't have a simultaneous release? There's no reason the black widow box office should've been that low.
JDL
JDL - 8/14/2021, 6:03 PM
@Origame - No. What I am saying is that there are movies that people will not go to the theater to see right now that pre-covid they would have. You were making a blanket statement that won't work for too many films. I was not addressing the split between B.O., pvod, or piracy in any way shape or form.
Origame
Origame - 8/14/2021, 6:43 PM
@JDL - so you think free guy is a movie people want to see in theaters but not black widow?

Dude, blockbuster films simply can't work on streaming. They simply cost too much.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 8/14/2021, 8:30 PM
@Origame - if anything these numbers show that streaming doesn't really impact BO.

Free Guy: $26mm opening
Suicide Squad: $26mm opening
Black Widow: $80mm opening
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2021, 4:20 AM
@Itwasme - that argument only works if you think free guy had the same interest as the suicide squad.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 8/15/2021, 8:17 AM
@Origame - Free Guy isn't coming off the heals of a BO failure by the same name. Theres been plenty of articles, by people way smarter than us, that say SS was going to fail anyway.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2021, 9:43 AM
@Itwasme - ...because they were also calculating hbo max. You can't just pretend that matters when they were calculating a variable you're ignoring.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 8/15/2021, 10:01 AM
@Origame - the numbers are showing that streaming isn't materially impacting BO. Its marginal compared to the pandemic. SS had 2.8mm views on HBO Max (new numbers should be out tomorrow). If we assume that's an average 2 people per view, you are looking at 5.6mm potential tickets, and at $10 a ticket, only $56mm in potential ticket gross - and you have to consider a number of the HBO Max viewers opted to watch SS because it was free to them. That's hardly setting the world alight.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2021, 2:29 PM
@Itwasme - hbo max...and pandemic.
JDL
JDL - 8/15/2021, 2:55 PM
@Origame - I didn't say that. Obviously you haven't understood my point which is: not every movie can make make it at the B.O. right now and whining for that doesn't help.

Otoh I have no problem with taking a position to the effect of not sending stuff straight to streaming like HBO max is doing. I understand why they are doing it but there is no doubt it is harming theaters.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2021, 3:11 PM
@JDL - dude you're the one coming to me saying I'm wrong for suggesting this is a sign for us to move from the simultaneous releases. It's not me who missed your point. It's the other way around.
