BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Scores An Incredible $25M In Advance Ticket Sales

Pre-release tracking is at an all-time high for The Dark Knight Rises as the release of Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated finale creeps ever closer. And it's not just good news in the US! London's BFI IMAX also notes record breaking sales.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The Dark Knight Rises has now earned a whopping $25 million in advance ticket sales; one of the highest figures of all-time. With analysts (and at this point, common sense) indicating that it will surpass The Dark Knight's $158.4 million to earn the accolade of being the highest opening for a 2D film, the question now is exactly how much it will end up making in total. With predictions of between $185 million and $195 million, Warner Bros. themselves are estimating a far more conservative $170 million, pointing out that, "Anything above that is going into unknown territory." To put it into context for you, Marvel's The Avengers currently has the highest opening ever at the North American box office with $207.4 million, although $35 million of that came from the higher 3D ticket prices. Regardless, the film will have the widest IMAX release of all-time at 330 theaters, meaning that it will easily surpass the record-breaking $15.3 million earned by The Avengers. Meanwhile, the following press release was issued by London's BFI IMAX earlier today.

London’s BFI IMAX cinema announces today that it has now sold 62,300 tickets for The Dark Knight Rises – The IMAX Experience, grossing £1,001,300, two days ahead of the film’s opening this Friday 20 July. Since tickets went on sale five weeks ago, thousands of Batman fans have been snapping them up to ensure they see the film in the best possible way – on Britain’s biggest screen.

The figures for both the advance box office gross and the number of tickets sold have beaten the cinema’s previous best-ever advance sales, which were for Avatar in December 2009 (£607,000 sales for 47,000 tickets). The Dark Knight Rises also broke BFI IMAX records for highest first day sales ever (24,754 tickets grossing £409,838) and the highest first week sales ever (38,658 tickets grossing £634,013). Both these records were previously held by Prometheus. 43 shows are now sold out, including screenings for early birds at 04.25 and 04.55 this weekend.

Nolan is utilising IMAX cameras even more extensively than he did on The Dark Knight, which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX cameras. Over an hour of the footage from the film is in IMAX format, with the image filling the giant screen. Dennis Laws, General and Technical Manager, BFI IMAX comments: "These figures prove that seeing The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, to truly experience Christopher Nolan’s incredible vision for the film, is an unmissable event this summer. People are even flying in from abroad especially to see the film at BFI IMAX. We want as many people as possible to be able to see it, so we’re already adding extra shows to meet the demand."

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

@marvel72 Well, you gotta talk all things into consideration... Batman has a huge following because of TDK (Take into faction that I am only watching it because of BB) and ticket prices have scaled significantly higher since 2008, also, it's summer, July, Avengers was in May, families are on Vacation now, they don't want to see a movie, they want to spend time with each other. Avengers did amazing because, well, it was, and it had no decent competition, though I'm not saying something could go up against it. TDKR, is on a Teeter-Totter, on one end, it could very well make a billion in 3 months due to the fanbase, or it could stay steady and make 800 million. It may beat the opening weekend of Avengers, but it won't demolish it's earnings, it's just a factual census of the pedigree of box offices.

But records are meant to be upped-1, so...

Im not surprised its that popular, its Batman, one of the greatest comic book characters, who is known by EVERYBODY (even my mum and dad who have no knowledge about comic books know who Batman is). He brings in people through his iconic status alone

But then you add one of the most respected & talented filmmakers in the shape of Nolan who has a great love for the character, knows what makes him tick & rescued him from movie hell. He is another huge reason why it will bring in more people

and then finally, its the third movie in a much loved series which contains two of the finest comic book movies ever

these are the reasons The Dark Knight Rises is going to do amazing. I hope its on par with The Avengers, to have two of the most amazing comic book movies ever, which are relatively true to the core of the characters they are based on, in the top 5 highest grossing movies would be mind blowingly awesome and ensure the future of the CBM genre!

I dont understand why people take this so serious, as i say, money doesnt say how great is a movie, just look avatar, This movie grossed like 2 billion and I didnt enjoy so much, see, we should not care about the money, the most important is that the movie will be enjoyable and thats all.

I think we can all agree if the Dark Knight Rises were to be released in 3D it would own the record for opening weekend gross. Now having said that, it really doesn't matter, because I think anyone with 1/8 of a working brain knew this film (and the Avengers) were going to be titans at the box office.

Well this is my last time on CBM until I see the Dark Knight Rises so I hope all of my fellow CBM fans enjoy the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight trilogy

And remember, dont have any heart attacks, for most of you, your hearts are weak after the awesome Avengers and the great Amazing Spider-Man, dont let the superbly incredible Dark Knight Rises finish you guys off lol

After the brilliant, fun journey to the Avengers alongside you guys, the journey to the Dark Knight Rises has been equally as fantastic. Apart from the few negative users & trolls, it has been the best fun keeping up with the news on Batman!

I remember when I first got into the Nolan Batman movies, my friend gave me a lend of Batman Begins DVD back in 2006 and omg, I was blown away by the brilliant characters played by stellar actors, the superb plot and just the story of Batman himself was interestingly fresh and new again and it was yet another movie that continues to make me a lifelong fan of CBMs. It got me so excited for the Dark Knight which just blew me away all over again with one of the most tear-jerking endings I have ever seen in a movie. I know Gordon's son was a little cheesy at the end but he portrayed my thoughts exactly, it wasnt fair that a true hero like Batman was forced to take the blame for Dent's crime to protect the city and I cant wait to see how the rest of the story plays out on Sunday!!!!

It will be great to finally see Batman become the hero Gotham deserves AND needs!

Later guys

At 2hrs 40min italy also limit the number of viewings per theater per day. That may impact the weekend draw. The length may also make people less likely to go back for repete viewings during the opening weekend... I expect 180-190m...

Why people have to pull number out of their ass to tell that TDKR can't break that Record, it can't break that!
Please just SHUT UP!!

It's just 1 day away & in 1.5 day we'll find out MidNight earnings!
Whatever it earned its gona be HUGE & we'll find out!

We'll find out soon how many records it broke or can't broke!
Stop pulling out predictions that it'll do 850 million or 977 Million... WTF is THAT!

BoxOfficeMojo analysed several months ago that TDKR can do 850 million in Foreign countries ALONE!
& they predicted Avengers to do 600 million foreign & now look where it is! Over 840 in foreign!

Foreign BoxOffice has expanded HUGELY since AVATAR, TF-3, Pirates-4, HP-8 & AVENGERS etc!
If TDKR is as EPIC in Action & Scale & as Satisfying in Ending as MOST reviews & reactions are suggesting then 600-650 is a No-Brainer in foreign markets & I'm being very careful!
TDK did 468 in foreign without any Grand scale Action stuff!!
This one got HUGE amounts of that!

After all that positive reaction & reviews; it's just stupid to even think it can't do 1 Billion worldwide!
Whether in 10 day or 10 months!
1 Billion is a guarantee at this point!
& that's analysts analysis, & without 3D & with being Sooo DARK & Not that Kids friendly & not as funny!
Building a reputation & an audience for ur self & ur film is whats most important!
Nolan has done that with His name & "Dark Knight" brands!
He delivers & people trust him to deliver!
