In an absolutely shocking development, Deadline is reporting that Chris Evans (Avengers: Infinity WarAvengers: Endgame) is close to striking a new deal with Marvel Studios to return as Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, in a future Marvel project.

While details are still scarce, Evans is expected to show up in at least one future Marvel project with an option to appear in a second film as well. However, the report notes that it's unlikely to be another solo Captain America film, and will instead be something more akin to the deal Robert Downey Jr. signed after Iron Man 3, where he played a supporting role in other heroes' standalone features.

No word yet on what this means for his future in the Avengers movies.

Despite previously saying he would be hanging up the shield following the record-breaking release of Avengers: Endgame, it appears as though Evans has had a change of heart over the past few months after the idea of a return was floated to him by Marvel Studios sometime last year. Then, as he became more on board with Marvel's vision, the two sides began to hammer out a new contract, and it sounds like they came to an official agreement right after the New Year.

It's not entirely clear when he may show up again, and it's probably safe to rule out The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is already wrapped and set to premiere in March, but anything is a possibility, from Spider-Man 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder to Blade and Fantastic Four to possibly even an X-Men or Secret Wars movie - if those projects are, in fact, in the works.
