CAPTAIN MARVEL Reactions Say It's Surprising & Unlike Any Marvel Movie Ever; Ben Mendelsohn Steals The Show
The first legitimate social media reactions for Marvel's Captain Marvel are in, and the verdict seems to be good as press members hail the film as one of the studio's most surprising and fun entries yet.
Almost all are in agreement that the film hits all the right notes as far as fun and spectacle go, and also packs more than a few unexpected surprises - although some more mixed reactions do note that the second half does seem to play stronger than its first.
It also seems to be pretty unanimous that Ben Mendelsohn's Skrull villain Talos steals the show and all but solidifies himself as one of the MCU's best villains ever by the time the credits roll, which is certainly welcome news. Plus, Carol's cat Goose also seems to be a big hit, which shouldn't be the least bit surprising.

#CaptainMarvel has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe w/ a tone unlike any other Marvel movie, really. It’s retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in surprising places & badass in all the right places. It remains entertaining because it’s always changing. It’s got the right stuff pic.twitter.com/o7AvqYY63x— Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) February 20, 2019
Love the cat, love Sam Jackson, LOVE Ben Mendelsohn, but honestly I’m calling Lashana Lynch as MVP. She brings an emotional weight to the film that is needed and transforms the entire movie upon arrival. Definitely need to see more of her#CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/QeEzUBM8O1— Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) February 20, 2019
Captain Marvel is a blast! Has some cool surprises that I definitely didn't see coming, and the mystery/origin it weaves is engaging and fun. Brie Larson is awesome, and makes a fantastic first step into the MCU #CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/oqrRtgDQrp— Eric Eisenberg (@eeisenberg) February 20, 2019
Oh, and yes, Goose is a brilliant scene-stealer— Eric Eisenberg (@eeisenberg) February 20, 2019
Fans of #CaptainMarvel comics are going to love the movie. Plain and simple.— Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) February 20, 2019
I’m really hoping Skrulls will be the Infinity Stones of the MCU going forward. Ben Mendelsohn is awesome and so is the whole shapeshifting concept. #CaptainMarvel— Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel is very fun. And I am thrilled to announce Brie Larson wears my EXACT SAME NINE INCH NAILS tee for more than half the film. Seriously. I’ve never seen anyone else with this shirt.— Anna Klassen (@AnnaJKlassen) February 20, 2019
Lots of fun Easter eggs in #CaptainMarvel that link it to the history and other films in the MCU. Watch closely.— Anna Klassen (@AnnaJKlassen) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel also offers Ben Mendelssohn his funniest and perhaps most endearing role ever.— Anna Klassen (@AnnaJKlassen) February 20, 2019
There’s an earnestness to #CaptainMarvel that feels different than other MCU films. I got chills watching Carol Danvers get back up over & over & over again.— Anna Klassen (@AnnaJKlassen) February 20, 2019
Captain Marvel is a mixed bag. First half is slow and uninspired. Second half much better. Feels like directors could not escape Marvel formula. Mendelson steals the move. VfX of full Marvel powers much better than trailers.— Gregory Ellwood - Playlist 🎬 (@TheGregoryE) February 20, 2019
CAPTAIN MARVEL isn’t what I expected based on marketing. It’s pretty much an “all in” cosmic space movie. Also, it’s a lot weirder than I expected. Ben Mendelsohn is awesome as Talos.— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) February 20, 2019
And not wacky weird like the GOTG movies. Think more “Rey snapping into endless mirrors” from The Last Jedi type scenes. Also, finally, the MCU and a Nirvana song come together (as Kurt Cobain wanted)— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) February 20, 2019
I can’t get over how great Ben Mendelsohn is. I was worried he was just going to be one of those Marvel villains with alien makeup, but that’s not the case at all. This movie doesn’t work without him.— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) February 20, 2019
Captain Marvel is everything that I hoped it would be. It feels completely unlike any other Marvel film. A unique and fresh take on an origin story that feels new. Brie Larson is fantastic as Carol Danvers. This is one of my favorite Marvel movies of all time. #CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/0ou7HU93MY— Scott Menzel (@TheOtherScottM) February 20, 2019
Just out of #CaptainMarvel. So many fun surprises I didn't expect + new (and old?) characters to love.— Kara Warner (@karawarner) February 20, 2019
Really loved #CaptainMarvel. It’s a little wobbly at times but only because it’s so ambitious. It’s beautifully constructed, hilarious and offers tons of surprises. @brielarson obviously rules but Ben Mendelsohn is the surprise MVP. pic.twitter.com/yQLQGl2Yt0— Drew Taylor (@DrewTailored) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel: Well, Thanos is [frick]ed.— Angie J. Han (@ajhan) February 20, 2019
My kingdom for a Nick Fury & Goose buddy comedy #CaptainMarvel— Angie J. Han (@ajhan) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel is a great origin story. Brie’s buddy cop chemistry with @SamuelLJackson is so much fun and her relationship with Lashana Lynch is the real heart of it. Ben Mendelsohn and the cat both steal the show.— Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) February 20, 2019
Marvel does a prequel right, not overexplaining too much but giving us unexpected answers in interesting ways. MCU’s most multilayered villain story. A fun 90s soundtrack, but sometimes the song choices feel too obvious.— Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) February 20, 2019
The future of the MCU gets even brighter adding #CaptainMarvel to the mix. Really fell for @brielarson’s sass, strength & energy in the role. Same with @LashanaLynch too! Ben Mendelsohn is A+ casting as Talos. And yes, Goose is a scene stealer. 2nd viewing can’t come soon enough.— Perri Nemiroff (@PNemiroff) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel is pure joy. I cannot wait for the generation of little girls who will grow up with Carol Danvers as a hero.— Devan Coggan (@devancoggan) February 20, 2019
And in news that is very true to my brand, I would die for Goose the cat. #CaptainMarvel— Devan Coggan (@devancoggan) February 20, 2019
I was fortune enough to see @captainmarvel and all I will say is every child on Earth should see this movie.— B. Dave Walters — Writer @ IDW & WoTC #DoTheThing (@BDaveWalters) February 20, 2019
Boys, girls, both and neither need to see the various portrayals of strength, courage, heroism and treachery in it.
They did it. That was my girl. ‘#HigherFurtherFaster, baby.’— Amy Dallen (@enthusiamy) February 20, 2019
@captainmarvel has a lot of heart is is super relevant to the times now. I loved all of the characters in this but Goose the cat might be my favorite MCU character. I’m excited to see @brielarson the the future of the MCU. #CaptainMarvel #marvel #marvelstudios pic.twitter.com/WdhL3WixbO— Joseph Deckelmeier (@ThatHashtagJoe) February 20, 2019
Captain Marvel is an effective Avengers prequel in some ways akin to the 1st Captain America movie. It’s pro-woman without being overdone with pre and post credit scenes that made me tear up and gave me goosebumps respectively pic.twitter.com/or2Oj7CdRV— sonaiya kelley (@sonaiyak) February 20, 2019
By pre* I mean before the movie starts! Though there are two post credits scenes that are worth staying for and the anticipation for ENDGAME is definitely stoked by this film pic.twitter.com/6LtCtXPJoa— sonaiya kelley (@sonaiyak) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel was a lot of fun! Just enough ‘90s nostalgia without overdoing it. Brie Larson is great. Ditto Sam Jackson & Ben Mendelsohn. Goose the cat is purr-fect. Some nice surprises and clever decisions throughout. Cool sci-fi elements. And funny! Thumbs up! pic.twitter.com/PzzxXir8pZ— Jim Vejvoda (@JimVejvoda) February 20, 2019
#CaptainMarvel is a welcome addition to the #MCU. The movie is really well done with some great moments. #benmendelsohn steals almost every scene he's in. @brielarson literally shines in the role. So ready for #AvengersEndGame pic.twitter.com/GET0socRjl— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) February 20, 2019
Make mine #CAPTAINMARVEL— Sabina Graves (@SabinaHasNoR) February 20, 2019
Hella empowering & filled with my 90’s Cali childhood! I saw the metro station near where I grew up by the old Marvel Studios, the Naval base my dad worked at when he immigrated here, & a friendship that made me miss my best friend.#HigherFurtherFaster
Facts: @brielarson is an unstoppable force as #CaptainMarvel. A supreme embodiment of the late 80’s to 90’s heroines that we looked up to, fully formed with agency and whose main relationship is with her best friend. So many girls are gonna see themselves, their struggle & fight!— Sabina Graves (@SabinaHasNoR) February 20, 2019
Some initial #CaptainMarvel reactions:— Kayti Burt (@kaytiburt) February 20, 2019
1. Cat people will love this movie.
2. Several truly magnificent music moments for this 90s kid.
3. Carol's hero moment was very cathartic/true to the female experience, imho.
4. The MCU feels more complete now that Carol is in it. ♥️
#CaptainMarvel was my ultimate 90s nerd girl fever dream + a cat. 💕🐈 💫 ✈️ Ben Mendelssohn gives Samuel L Jackson a run for his scene-stealer $$$. But it’s ultimately cool AF to see @brielarson harness the power of being “just a girl” 👸 pic.twitter.com/bFHUwa3Gb8— Angelique Jackson (@angelique814) February 20, 2019
