ETERNALS Star Gemma Chan On Returning To The MCU As A Different Character After CAPTAIN MARVEL

Gemma Chan had a small role as Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel, and is set to play Sersi in Eternals. Now, the actress has commented on returning to the MCU as a completely different character...

Captain Marvel featured the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians, Humans) as Minn-Erva, and although the blue-skinned warrior made an impression thanks to some impressive action scenes, it wasn't exactly the type of role that an actress of Chan's talents could really sink her teeth into.

Thankfully, Chan was given the opportunity to return for Chloe Zhao's upcoming Eternals as one of the movie's main characters, Sersi, and during an interview with Empire, she spoke about playing a completely different character in the MCU.

“I feel very lucky to have been welcomed back into the MCU so quickly after my first appearance; the reception has been very warm,” she tells the mag. “I feel fortunate because we had a lot of crossover in the crew between the two films so there was continuity in that sense, but these are completely different projects, in completely different times, the characters are different.”

Based on everything we've seen and heard, Eternals is also going to be a very different sort of Marvel movie, with Zhao (Nomadland, The Rider) given the go-ahead to bring her distinctive style to the project.

“We shot it like it was an indie film, almost completely on location using natural light, pretty much all at magic hour,” adds Chan. “It’s such an epic, ambitious film, with [Zhao] bringing her signature style and sensibility.”

Marvel's Eternals also stars Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as the cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayak as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as the aloof Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harrington will also appear as Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight.

Marvel Studios' Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, The Deviants.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 4.
