READY PLAYER ONE Heading Toward A Stellar $53M+ Domestic Debut; Spielberg's Biggest Opening In Ten Years
Following widespread critical acclaim and a strong fan reception, Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One is off to a stellar start at the box office and is on pace to score over $53M over the Easter weekend.
If the numbers hold, RPO will be Spielberg's biggest opening, as a director, in almost ten years since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opened to $100.1 million back in 2008. The film will also be his fifth-biggest three-day opening weekend, after the aforementioned Crystal Skull, The Lost World: Jurassic Park ($72.1M), War of the Worlds ($64.8M), and Jurassic Park ($47.0M).
Internationally, the film has opened day and date in 62 foreign markets and has earned well over $42.6 million already (not including China). As for the Middle Kingdom, it's opened in the #1 spot with approximately $39.2 million in two days, making it the third-highest Chinese debut for a Warner Bros. film ever. Overall, Ready Player One has already earned approximately $109 million worldwide and will likely top the $150 million mark when the weekend actuals come in on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, last week's #1 film, Pacific Rim Uprising is expected to take a pretty steep drop in its second frame, taking in just around $9 million this weekend for a fifth-place finish in the United States. However, while it will ultimately finish as a domestic disappointment, it's international totals have been an entirely different story as it's earned over $122.4 million overseas, as of 3/25/18.
