Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hit theaters earlier this year and exceeded both critical and commercial expectations. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a major new player on the board, but Shang-Chi could have looked a whole lot different based on these early designs.

While the first is relatively close to what we saw in the movie, Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park explains, "It was before I incorporated dragon skin/scales, and this had a bit of a modern urban flavor to it with the hoodie and all." If anything, this looks a little closer to the comic books, and you can see how it inspired what would become the final design.

The second version is vastly different from what made it to the big screen, and Park explains how the comic books - primarily Shang-Chi's association with MI6 - played into his thought process for this very early take on the master of martial arts. "This is some kind of jumpsuit kung-fu hero type look that I got to explore. Perhaps this lent to a more spy MI-6-type mission look."

There's a lot to love about these designs, but the suit we ended up with is arguably superior to both. Hopefully, more concept art is on the way as it's always fun to explore these early takes.

Even though he looks like antman without the helmet, that suit is fresh as [frick]!

As a half Chinese man, I always feel super uncomfortable when asian heroes have like dragon powers and shit...

I hated his outfit in the movie tbh it just felt too generic (especially for the MCU), I wish they would've gone with the more Bruce Lee-inspired tracksuit like the one he used to wear in the comics.

Wait, Shang-Chi is an MI6 agent in the comics?

I literally know almost nothing about the character outside of the movie, but holy shit it was so good it's probably in my top 5 MCU movies.

I actually don't get any Ant-Man vibes from the second suit and it has a little bit of a Bruce Lee silhouette with the baggy pants and plimsolls. Perhaps they could give it a different colour scheme (black and red is very generic and mostly covered by Ant-Man, Spider-Man, and Daredevil), but it's a cool suit and I hope it shows up in a sequel sometime.

Concept art looks cool, I guess having the Ta Lo people give him the supersuit was a later addition. I could see him stealing this from his father's compound.

More of the same. They look so generic and boring now. All heroes' outfits have the same materials and designs even though they're in vastly different corner of the universe.
