Spider-Man: Homecoming made some sweeping changes to Peter Parker, including giving the teenager a suit that had been created by Tony Stark, a.k.a. the Invincible Iron Man. Many fans were unhappy with the wall-crawler getting so many technological advancements, hence why some on social media would later dub him "Iron Man Jr."
That wasn't helped by an A.I. in his costume named "Karen" or "Suit Lady," and one of the reboot's writers has now admitted that they had reservations about heading down that route.
"It ultimately worked but we were skeptical about the Spider suit talking," Jonathan Goldstein explains. "Felt it brought us too close to Iron Man and Jarvis." It did work, and actually led to some of Spider-Man: Homecoming's funniest moments; however, by the time the Avengers movies and Spider-Man: Far From Home rolled around, the idea of Peter having an A.I. had been dropped.
While we don't know this for sure, it seems likely Marvel Studios decided it was unnecessary or simply didn't work as well as they'd hoped based on the reaction from fans.
There's nothing wrong with the MCU's Spidey having a few extra gadgets, but Karen did feel a tad superfluous and not something Peter really needed after his clash with The Vulture. We'll see if the A.I. is referenced in Spider-Man: No Way Home in any way, but we're not banking on it!
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in U.S. on December 17 and in the UK on December 15.
