Spider-Man: Homecoming writer Jonathan Goldstein has admitted to having reservations about giving Peter Parker an A.I. "Suit Lady" in the reboot, revealing concerns it was too similar to Iron Man...

Spider-Man: Homecoming made some sweeping changes to Peter Parker, including giving the teenager a suit that had been created by Tony Stark, a.k.a. the Invincible Iron Man. Many fans were unhappy with the wall-crawler getting so many technological advancements, hence why some on social media would later dub him "Iron Man Jr."

That wasn't helped by an A.I. in his costume named "Karen" or "Suit Lady," and one of the reboot's writers has now admitted that they had reservations about heading down that route.

"It ultimately worked but we were skeptical about the Spider suit talking," Jonathan Goldstein explains. "Felt it brought us too close to Iron Man and Jarvis." It did work, and actually led to some of Spider-Man: Homecoming's funniest moments; however, by the time the Avengers movies and Spider-Man: Far From Home rolled around, the idea of Peter having an A.I. had been dropped.

While we don't know this for sure, it seems likely Marvel Studios decided it was unnecessary or simply didn't work as well as they'd hoped based on the reaction from fans.

There's nothing wrong with the MCU's Spidey having a few extra gadgets, but Karen did feel a tad superfluous and not something Peter really needed after his clash with The Vulture. We'll see if the A.I. is referenced in Spider-Man: No Way Home in any way, but we're not banking on it!

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in U.S. on December 17 and in the UK on December 15.

Glad they dropped it first thing thought of was iron man

Well, it WAS too close to Jarvis. It was only occasionally funny.

I miss it tbh. Karen was hilarious.

@TheLobster - she helped Peter learn about the suit's capabilities and that is likely the only way he would have.

Oh come on, the ai didn't work. It was such a forced way to include the introspective bubbles from the comics while making it so he isn't coming up with the strategies he otherwise would've. On top of that, it's one of the most compelling points for the iron man Jr. argument.

It was nice way of including Spider-Man monologuing to himself, without actually having him talking to himself the whole movie, which is something that works with comic book word/thought balloons, but not really anywhere else (as seen with the 90's animated series).

No it didn't work, and yes it did bring it too close to Iron Man and Jarvis. Lmao.

His skin-tight suit being full of tech popping out of it like Iron Man armor is annoying in general.

It served its purpose, despite others seeing it as a negative.

I noticed changes from homecoming to far from home. Watts is definitely aware and has a goal in mind for Peter Parker. The fact that Pete better understood his spider sense in far from home showed that

That was one of the worst bits in Homecoming. Loathe as I am at this point of MCU Pete that was still a pretty good movie regardless

For me it was too close to Jaime and Khajida.

I actually wonder how they'll play out that relationship seeing as we've also had Venom recently.

“It did work”

NARRATOR: It, in fact, did not work.

The first movie was written so much better than the second (and third, judging by the leaks).

The current writers have a penchant to double down on the things fans don't like.
Don't like the Stark AI? We'll make it the whole plot of the second movie. We'll just change her name from Karen to Edith.
Don't like how everybody knows Spidey's secret identity? Fine, we'll [SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER].

Here goes Josh with the subtle spoilers…The guy already watched the movie…AND he very clearly gets off on spoiling it for others without telling them that he is, in fact, spoiling the thing…

“ We'll see if the A.I. is referenced in Spider-Man: No Way Home in any way, but we're not banking on it!”

Best to outright NOT click on any Josh, Ruby, Hamilton or any other Josh alias articles until after you've seen the movie…

Yeah the AI thing was terrible. It did make spiderman too close to Ironman, and it was an intentional direct rip off of Tony/Jarvis. It kinda made sense with the plot of Ironman trying to make Spiderman in his own image and spidey learning to be his own person. But they didn’t stick the landing on that arc and there were better ways to do it.

Like Spidey wears the iron spider suit (not a standard spidey suit with ai added), fails, then does things ‘his own way’, succeeds, then refuses Tony’s suit (and everything it implies, showing he learned do to the movies arc) at the end. And they actually stick with it: no Stark suit in Infinity War completely defeating the purpose of the entire first movie. And don’t center the 2nd movie on Spidey being the new Stark: the first movie already had him supposedly reject that role.

Or just go a totally different route with homecoming and keep the plot in far from home.

The best mcu spiderman is still the Russo bros spidey: civil war, infinity war, endgame. The ‘home’ trilogy has been very disappointing so far

I felt it was fun for the first film and liked the idea of capturing Spider-Man’s internal monologue from the comics in a natural way. That being said, it didn’t need to be around for more than one movie as it fit the themes of the first film.

I wish at the very least they explained what happened to "her". Did Peter remove the AI and give it to someone else? Did Tony remove "her"? Same with Friday. Are we gonna see Friday return for Ironheart? Will one of them become Jocosta?
