Hawkeye arrives on Disney+ this Thanksgiving with the show's first two episodes, and a new minute-long promo for the show aired on ABC last night. There are some great, never-before-seen footage from the series here, including Kate Bishop expressing her excitement to be working with an Avenger.

Ronin can once again be seen in action, but the biggest reveal here is a clear shot of Alaqua Cox's Echo. There's no handprint on her face, but the fact that she's joined by Fra Fee's Kazimierz Kazimierczak (better known as the villainous Clown in the comic books) is definitely interesting. Clearly, she's going to start off on the wrong side here, but is The Kingpin, Wilson Fisk, pulling the strings?

That remains to be seen, but it feels like Hawkeye could be a real game-changer for the MCU. After all, Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop is a character who could soon be an Avenger in her own right.

"Set in post-blip New York City, former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero," reads the synopsis for the series. "The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit."

Starring Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Hawkeye also features Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. Helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie, Hawkeye is set to debut exclusively on Disney+ on November 24, 2021...with the first two episodes!

I have a feeling this is gonna end up being my favorite MCU tv show this year. Also, the premise makes it sound really fun

@bkmeijer - I'm hoping this is my favorite of all the shows, period. I'm more hyped for this than I have been for any of the previous shows, and I was definitely hyped for most of those.

you know, after all the pent-up grief, political speeches, existential crisis and watching the Avengers die horrible deaths several times, it's nice to have one these D+ shows that just seems to be focused on being fun, specially when it's airing near the holiday season, we could really use some joy this year.

@Spidey91 - I'll admit most of them were pretty dark, but I thoroughly liked seeing Bucky and Sam hang out at the neighbourhood bbq at the end of FATWS

There's a fair amount in the MCU right now that i feel myself losing interest in, but this show is still hype-central. Cannot wait.

@TheManWithoutFear - I do feel that covid and delays (not the newest delays who cares, I mean last year) knocker the wind out of marvel’s sails somewhat. Also I know people who say they won’t watch all of em at the movies like they used to before Endgame and that had nothing to do with covid. A friend of mine literally said I’m just gonna watch Spider-Man in theaters. He didn’t care bout Black Widow, Shang Chi, or Eternals. He ain’t some Sony shill, just doesn’t care. What’s worse tho is my friends who stopped watching Disney plus marvel stuff. They straight up didnt like what they’ve seen and won’t be tuning in. I’m sitting here like dang, we used to go in a big group and watch MCU stuff opening night! I’m still gonna, with my kids.

@TheWalkingCuban - I know two people who were loyal MCU fans and lost most of their interest and excitement after Tony Stark died. One doesn't see them at the theaters anymore (nothing to do with COVID), buys the Blu-rays, but doesn't watch them. And the other just stopped watching them, as Tony was their favorite character.

I sometimes wonder how many fans Marvel Studios lost by killing Tony.

@LSHF - I would say a lot, and I think it was great writing and made for a great movie, but he was the golden goose. Thing is… it would’ve been a good way to end things. I see this as somebody that’s going to watch all of it, but I know a lot of people that used to wont anymore.

@TheWalkingCuban - The actor was leaving no matter what. Are you in any way suggesting that simply having Tony alive but always off camera would make a difference ?

@JDL - no
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 10/20/2021, 10:53 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - I think it's very interesting. Marvel took a gamble of developing less well known IP in phase 4 like Eternals and Shang-Chi. With the wind in their sails after Endgame they had license to print money and i totally understand the reasons. But then the pandemic hit and knocked the wind out of everything. Now they are left releasing "riskier" IP at a time when people are generally less enthusiastic. So it's an interesting dynamic. I know for me i am not that interested in Eternals and debating whether to wait until it hits D+.

I also think that covid has left a lot of people wanting comfort-watches. Which is why Hawkeye might do well. He's an OG Avenger and people associate him with a time when life was good haha.

But i am just an old man waffling at this point so i'll stop. Way too interested in viewer psychology haha.

@TheManWithoutFear - same, just turned 39 and sittin here lookin for a primary physician cuz the way I eat, if I ain’t got diabetes, nobody does, but yeah covid knocked a lot of wind out of alot of sails. Guess Marvel ain’t immune.

JDL - 10/20/2021, 2:50 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Fair enough. FWIW although Strange hits some of the same vibes as Tony (which I think is intentional) he shouldn't interact with others nearly so much which may be at least part of what you are getting at.
StSteven
StSteven - 10/24/2021, 2:01 PM
@JDL - You know guys (and gals) if there is a perceived "MCU fatigue" coming on I think it's not really that. It's simply that the movies/TV shows are becoming like the comics in the sense that there are so many of them now and they are spreading into all these different genres that it's not all for everyone (although I for one will continue to watch anything and everything MCU related). It's kinda like this: when I was younger and collected comics I used to get all the X-Men books and all the Spidey books. Then I also started collecting Ghost Rider and Punisher. And Wolverine. But I never collected Captain America,Iron Man, dare Devil, the Avengers, etc. Not that I had anything against those characters, but I just wasn't as interested in them as I was in the other characters. And of course being a kid in high school time and money was a factor. So that's how I see the MCU going: it's getting so expansive that a lot of folks will end up picking some sub-areas of it that they like the most (like, say, the cosmic side or the supernatural side) and there will ultimately be SO MUCH MCU content in those sub-areas that it will be enough to keep those people satisfied. I'm sure that this has occurred to Kevin Feige and the rest of the head honchos at Marvel and they seem to be totally leaning into it. For us as fans all I can say is what a great time to live (all things considered) where even the worst Marvel Studios content is better than most stuff that in on TV or in the theaters. I mean 10 years ago I never thought that I'd be able to say "yeah I'm typically into the cosmic and supernatural MCU stuff but I'm not that into the spy/espionage stuff although a friend of mine recommended Secret Wars so I might check that out after I finish this other stuff"). It's like are you talking about the shows or the comics?

Oh, and I have a feeling that Lucky is going to steal this show. Just wait. They're holding the Lucky stuff back. Fo sho.
JDL
JDL - 10/24/2021, 7:07 PM
@StSteven - There are only two obvious non cosmic ways to go. 1) Street Level 2) Horror/Macabre.

With Sony owning Spidey and the Netflix shows not being all that popular overseas Street Level is doa. As for Horror Sony is already there. Sorry it's either Cosmic or Global imo which is the same group of characters. So I disagree. Mostly. It depends on how well Sony does outside of Venom.
StSteven
StSteven - 10/25/2021, 12:34 PM
@JDL - Hi. First off, thanks for disagreeing respectfully. I shouldn't have to say that but I've seen too many folks get verbally attacked here for just having a different opinion than someone else. Anyhow, so I guess what I was trying to say is that it seems like Marvel is consciously trying to carve out different genres within its own "super hero movie" genre and that will ultimately lead to different people gravitating toward the areas that they like more than others (although some of us will be there for everything we can get our hands on :)). Case in point: Guardians of the Galaxy (and whatever spin-offs that will undoubted come from it i.e. Nova, etc.) are pretty much exclusively cosmic (i.e. non-Earth) movies. Feige has said before that they are definitely expanding in that direction (please don't ask me for the direct quote as I don't have it handy). So there is going to be that corner of the MCU which continue to grow. Depending on what they decide to do with Captain Marvel, she could also fit in there, although I think that "The Marvels" movie will be primarily Earth-centered, but it's still too early to tell.

Then we have the more "grounded" Earth-bound characters like Sam and Bucky (and the new Captain America movie coming), if that's more your cup of tea. In that same vein (although a different flavor) are the spy/espionage movies/shows like Black Widow, Secret Wars, and pretty much anything that Nick Fury is involved in. Sure you can make the argument that because Nick in currently out in space on a ship full of Skrulls that he fits into that cosmic genre, but aside from that being a convenient place to put him for now and set him up for his future adventures I don't really think that that space setting matters for his character. At least not like it does for, say, Peter Quill.

Anyhow, then we could go on for the magical/mystical side of things, the multiverse, etc. But hopefully you see where I'm going with this. Regarding the horror aspect, I don't know that Sony is purposely trying to go down that route (meaning "scary comic book movies") but they definitely seem to have more of those aspects in their CBMs than Marvel does between Venom and presumably Morbius. However keep in mind that Sony wants butts in seats so they're most likely not going to violate that PG-13 rating with any of their CBMs (sorry I'm just getting tire of writing out "Comic Book Movies"). And Marvel has, in addition to Dr. Strange and tMoM (which may or may not have horror elements), their whole new "horror" genre coming out with Blade, Moon Knight, and possibly other titles like "Werewolf by Night" and other things that we've heard rumors about. Again, Marvel obviously won't keep these genres mutually exclusive (like how do you keep the magical/mystical side separate from the horror side?), but I think that over time we will see definitive genres arise (I haven't even mentioned the martial arts genre yet for example).

Finally, regarding your point about the street level characters (i.e. Netflix ones), you are spot-on about Marvel's deficiency in that area and (although I don't work for Marvel or am privy to any of their internal schemes) I'm pretty sure that they are aware of it. They have been very good at making world-level or even universe-level stories that they've somewhat neglected the street-level ones. Now, in their defense, for a number of years the Netflix shows were covering that aspect. But now that that's done I think that Marvel is stepping up to fill that void with their D+ shows like "Hawkeye", "Jessica Jones', and possibly "Ms. Marvel". "Echo" will probably fall in there as well. And whatever the hell they're doing with DareDevil will likely fall in there as well.

So I guess that my original point was just that whether you like the gritty crime drama or the space opera (or both) Marvel Studios seems to be diversifying to the point that there's going to a lot of content in each genre for everyone. Which works out really well for someone like me who's about to have some pretty serious surgery and nothing to do for a while but lie in bed and watch D+/Netflix and drool on myself (and that's because of the meds, NOT because of ScarJo in that tight leather outfit. Or Lizzy. Or Sophia. Damn it I'm married! What's wrong with you people?!?). BTW, sorry for the TL;DR. Best :)

JDL - 10/27/2021, 10:01 PM
@StSteven - OK you are splitting things up into what I would deem 'sub genres'. Part of which; Earth Global vs. the rest of the Universe I can see because there is so much crossover already, but beyond that it gets tricky. Finally keep in mind that I am for the most part addressing films. D+ is another animal. Stuff is possible on it that won't play as well in theaters.

Imo nobody gets a movie unless a) they are going to be in the next Avengers or b) they die in their movie. (a one- shot) or c) you split things into an Avengers group and a second, to be named, later group or d) you allow standalone films that are only peripherally in the MCU. B & D could work but I don't think they would ever give them a shot. So either A or C.

Two groups would be hard to service with 9-10 films over 3 years before your group efforts. More likely you would end up with 12-13 films over 4 years, followed up by the group gropes. I don't think that works.

The second group won't do as much business as the Avengers and might even decrease the latter's sense of specialness which would decrease it's BO. Imo a second character group makes more sense on D+ than at the BO. YMMV.

Street Level stuff other than Spidey. The characters do not travel well. Outside of North America they are much less popular. Now the production costs on shows like this can be much much lower. Those Netflix shows were sold to them for about three million dollars an episode. Their cost was maybe 65 to 75% of that since Disney needed to make a profit.

There is no doubt in my mind that Marvel could make a movie with these characters at a low cost (25-30 million let's say) that would be profitable in North America at least. It just wouldn't do well elsewhere. That sets up a two tier system and I don't think that they will do that. Having a bunch of Marvel Movies making a Global Box Office number in the low 200 millions looks bad along side of the major releases. You also are going to run ito the same problem the TV shows did. Nothing that happened on them was ever going to be referenced elsewhere in the MCU if they are movies and too few people overseas watch them. So I just can't see this genre as a good movie candidate.

Where these characters could show up is D+. They really need content for that and there are no box office numbers to get in the way. Moreover since they wouldn't cost subscribers anything extra they probably would get higher viewership overseas than if they were released in movie form.

There are two categories for these Disney+ shows in my mind. “Good show”, and “should have been a movie”. Wandavision was a good show. The other two should have been movies. Hawkeye looks like a good show. I thought the same for Falcon tho but it’s more fun being positive in life.
