Just realised I had Maria and Monica mixed up LOL

They ever give a reason for carol Danvers not aging in the 20+ years between her solo and endgame
Blergh
Blergh - 2/3/2021, 4:16 AM
@dracula - figured her powers are keeping her young a fresh.

@dracula - her powers?
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 2/3/2021, 4:25 AM
@dracula - She learned the power from the foxmen characters.
AC1
AC1 - 2/3/2021, 4:34 AM
@dracula - probably her powers. I wonder if they'll bring it up at some point though, I mean by Endgame (baring in mind it's set in 2023) she was like 60 years old lol.
Franshu
Franshu - 2/3/2021, 5:27 AM
@dracula - Most likely, because of her powers. And/or, she was staying in a planet orbiting a black hole, INTERSTELLAR-style, which would also explain her long abscence from Earth (especially during events where she'd have come handy).

Off-screen killing get a bad rep because the way it's usually utilized is the explain away an actors departure. But if it's properly woven into the story such tropes can still hold a lot of power and I think they did a great job here.

It's different if you kill off a character off screen because their respective actor has left due to issues or using it to deliver a proper blow to viewers

@Blergh - Sometimes on-screen killing just to deliver a blow to viewers is arguably worse. Especially when it isn’t earned.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 2/3/2021, 5:53 AM
@JFerguson - I think this was earned. Joel was a villain in the first game, in my opinion. Also, it was gut wrenching to watch. I thought it was well done

I felt it worked because Maria wasn't a character who necessarily made a huge impact but at the same time, its shocking because of how much it affects Monica, who seems far more important to the wider MCU.
Kumkani

Personally I found Monica not being there while her mum was dying to be a very relatable story so I really appreciated that they used a moment like that to explore just how tragic the Decimation and the Blip can be.

I liked how they brought a bit of creepyness to the snap. Far from made it look like a joke lol

Imagine losing a loved one in the years you were snapped away, imagine that loved on being on their death bed and losing you first.

Damn I loved that bit of the episode
Kingdork
Kingdork - 2/3/2021, 4:48 AM
@DaClungerlorian - I love that they can just drop you in the middle of the chaos without a warning and know exactly what is going on. You automatically connect emotionally with what's happening. This is one of the biggest strength of the MCU and why I think WandaVision works so well so far. I honestly don't know if it's possible to truly appreciate the show without a prior knowledge of the MCU.
Origame
Origame - 2/3/2021, 5:03 AM
@DaClungerlorian - should've been there before far from home, that only explored the comedic implications of the blip.
DeadClunge
DeadClunge - 2/3/2021, 5:11 AM
@Kingdork - yeah you 100% right about having prior knowledge to the MCU. its even similar when it comes to the comics books a lot of the Easter eggs from the first 3 episodes went over my head as my X-Men knowledge is limited 🤣....
DeadClunge
DeadClunge - 2/3/2021, 5:11 AM
@Origame - very true
Kingdork
Kingdork - 2/3/2021, 5:25 AM
@Origame - I kinda disagree. It would feel out of place in Far From Home. Here it fits perfectly and adds to Monica's character and story. I like the fact that we have different perspectives.

We had the Endgame one which happened off-screen with Scott looking at the window and Hawkeye having a phone call, very minimalistic almost ethereal moment before it was paid-off with the "on your left" mic drop later on. We had Far From Home with a more light-hearted perspective from high-school kids who wanted to unwind and move on with a school trip abroad (which also happened many months after the reverse Snap). And now with have WandaVision which deals with it in a more tragic way as the show's central themes revolve around loss and trauma.
Origame
Origame - 2/3/2021, 5:31 AM
@Kingdork - it's really not out of place. The best way I'd describe Spiderman is a tragedy disguised as a comedy. If your Spiderman movie doesn't work without this kind of sense of tragedy then you aren't making a Spiderman movie.
Kingdork
Kingdork - 2/3/2021, 5:56 AM
@Origame - On paper I agree with what you're saying. But in reality, Watts Spider-Man movies don't abide by that rule and while fun and entertaining they always seem to miss the mark of what Spider-Man is and should be. They never hold no dramatic weight, Aunt May is just there to be the "hot aunt" and they never got passed that in more than 3 movies. No struggle, so real drama, no real tragedy (I mean you don't feel the toll of the loss of Uncle Ben and what he meant to her AT ALL). There's no real sense of sacrifice, you don't feel Peter having to carry so much on his shoulders and he's basically a dumb kid who makes dumb mistake but always has some assist from someone from the MCU.

I think Homecoming and FFH work in the context of the MCU and succeed at aping 80's inspired teen comedies. They're fun but Holland's Spidey never really feels like Spider-Man to me. Which is fine, it's a different interpretation I can get behind for the sake of continuity. But they fail as a Spider-Man movie IMO.
Origame
Origame - 2/3/2021, 6:07 AM
@Kingdork - so...what's your point. I'm arguing they could've been better both in being Spiderman movies as well as representing ideas in the mcu.
Kingdork
Kingdork - 2/3/2021, 6:13 AM
@Origame - What I'm saying is Watts movies (especially FFH) aren't DESIGNED to support that kind of dramatic weight. That's why it doesn't fit in FFH but works in WandaVision.
Origame
Origame - 2/3/2021, 6:19 AM
@Kingdork - ...then design them to.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 2/3/2021, 9:09 AM
@Origame - That seems like a moot point
Origame
Origame - 2/3/2021, 10:25 AM
@OmegaBlack13 - it's only a moot point when they stop making Spiderman movies.
AC1
AC1 - 2/3/2021, 4:37 AM
Monica losing her mother in such an unexpected and sudden way instantly added a tonne of emotional weight to both characters and the Snap itself.
