WANDAVISION Star Paul Bettany Shares The Benefits Of Filming The Series In Front Of A Live Studio Audience
With parts of WandaVision set in some sort of sitcom reality, a real audience was brought in for many of those scenes in the Disney+ series. Now, star Paul Bettany describes why that helped the show...
WandaVision is clearly going to be a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it arrives on Disney+ on January 15th, especially with the Scarlet Witch clearly set to play a huge role in future stories (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, for example).
Marvel Studios is definitely taking a different approach to the show, though, especially as a big part of it is going to see Wanda and The Vision seeming trapped in sitcoms from across the decades.
Some of those required a real live studio audience (all of whom signed strict NDAs) and WandaVision star Paul Bettany has now explained the benefit of having them present for shooting. "It was the best fun ever. I kind of thought, 'God, I've totally wasted my life. I should have been doing sitcoms all this time,'" Bettany told the ReelBlend Podcast.
"It was so much fun. It was like being in summer stock [theater] or something, just running around backstage grabbing props or prob tables, and bumping into Kathryn Hahn as she's coming into the door at the right moment."
"It was so much fun, and there was a practical reason for it, which is you're trying to have exactly the same production values as you would in one of the movies," the actor continued. "So being able to shoot one episode in two days and really curtail the amount of time you're spending on those early episodes — and shooting them as they would have been shot in the 1950s, with three-camera setups and through sets that are built on a stage with an audience — you get through it really quickly. And then you're able to bank that time to shoot the action."
It's going to be amazing seeing these scenes play out in WandaVision, and it's clear that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige went to great efforts to ensure that they feel as authentic as possible.
