Dave Bautista's name wasn't on the massive cast list for What If...?, and the Guardians of the Galaxy star has now confirmed that Marvel Studios never actually asked him to reprise the role of Drax...

Marvel Studios recently shared an incredible cast list for What If...? with some big names and plenty of surprises. There were some noteworthy omissions, however, with some expected (Robert Downey Jr.) and others not (Dave Bautista). Asked on Twitter by a fan why he's not lending his voice to the animated series, the actor confirmed he was never actually asked!

As you can see, that prompted a surprised reaction from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, and it definitely seems a little odd that Bautista was never approached.

While he has spoken openly about not being happy with Disney after they (briefly) fired Gunn from Vol. 3, those recent comments about not liking where Drax's story has gone in the MCU likely came after dialogue for the show was recorded. Plus, the actor is coming back for the next Guardians movie, so it's not as if Bautista has parted ways with the studio!

Having seen the first three episodes of What If...?, we can tell you that Drax does have a minor role - and speaking lines - in one of them.

In related news, the show's Head Writer, A.C. Bradley, recently revealed in a roundtable interview with Kakuchopurei.com that she pitched an episode that was turned down due to being too similar to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. "It took me a couple of days to break it. I was very excited about it. I went to Bryan [Andrews, director] and was like, here we go, this is what happens, do you think Kevin Feige would approve? He went, oh, yeah, Kevin would love that, that’s half the plot of Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3."

"I was like, 'You’re kidding,' and he went, 'Nope, good job, you guessed it,'" she added. "So, that one I can’t do because the amazing James Gunn is already going to do it."

If this unknown concept was considered for a show like What If...?, something tells us Gunn has some crazy ideas for the threequel we definitely haven't been able to predict yet!

Maybe he was just standing so still that nobody at Marvel could see him when they tried to find him.

That is very strange. But brie Larson isn't playing Carol danvers either so it could just be he maybe only has one scene with a few lines so it would be a little much to get him to come in to do those.

Although with Feige involved he likes his consistency so you think he'd want to get everyone he can. Even for the smallest lines.

@Mrcool210 - from the 50 or so characters that are to appear based on the voice casting lineup, 10 episodes and some 25-30mins of run time for each. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of characters for more than a few minutes cumulative through the 10eps.

Jesus, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on the Guardians 3 set no matter how much I was getting paid at this point.

@McMurdo - Batista is the one helping to destroy the character... considering the character shift Thor has had in the MCU i could see Drax being given a similar one to make Batista happy, but being vocal about all his gripes has not helped that to happen. Heck a variant could have come out played by Batista that could have been the bada$$ that everyone wanted.

@JonC - so what? Make Drax fat too? As if he isn’t already a walking sight gag as is. You’re out of touch. Drax’ character was butchered by Gunn when they deleted his human origins, glossed over the death of his family by Thanos, and tossed his vengeance under the rug. Pick up a comic!

I'm guessing they figured for some of the actors who only had short appearances that it wasn't worth paying them their fee.

@ThePott - I think you're probably right. But considering they got so many others back it stands out as a strange omission. I've also noticed Zoe Saldana doesn't appear to be voicing Gamora either.

@Orphix - Maybe, guessing some of the ones that are mostly cameos or not recurring were not asked back depending on their asking price.

I mean he has been shitting on Marvel since Gunn was fired. He's said he didnt like way character was, that he'd never do a D+ series etc.

Maybe they just dont want to even be bothered with him at this point.

He doesnt seem very grateful or happy to be with Marvel.

@Chris827 - Agreed, both him and Gunn have been digging at Marvel and Superhero movies in general since then and i'm ready to move on from both of them tbf

@Chris827 - for real. Why should he expect them to do him the favor of asking him to return for this when he's been very vocally whining about Drax and Marvel all the time.

Batista needs to just stfu until they inevitably kill him off in Vol 3 tbh. He's one of the worst side characters in the whole MCU anyways, so no great loss

Maybe if you keep shitting on your employer continuously they won't bring you back for projects that aren't totally necessary and would save them a buck or two if they just got a sound-alike on the cheap.

I don't side with Disney on this but if you're prone to trash a studio so vocally and have seemingly embraced the side of the competitions fanbase you're considered a liability.

Also why I think Bautista, Gunn or Johansson are positively not going to return. Disney is tribalistic, if youre in opposition to them they'll find a way to cut you loose.
