Fans of television comedy are in mourning today at the loss of the legendary Ed Asner, who passed away at the age of 91. Asner was well known for his comedic role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show which he then reprised in the dramatic series Lou Grant. He was also a lifelong activist serving as the President of the Screen Actors Guild, and fought for the rights of his fellow actors long after he served his time in the position.
Younger audiences will know Asner for his roles in the likes of Up and Elf, and for comic book fans, he was the voice of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man The Animated Series as well as Uncle Ben in Spectacular Spider-Man, Granny Goodness in Superman The Animated Series, Roland Daggett in Batman The Animated Series, Freakazoid's buddy Sgt. Mike Cosgrove in Freakazoid, and many other memorable shows.
Asner is survived by his four children who announced the news. Our thoughts are with them in this difficult time. RIP Ed.
