The first Angry Birds movie was released back in 2016 and didn't manage to break the so-called "video game curse" with mixed to negative reviews, achieving a disappointing 43% on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being hated by many critics, The Angry Birds Movie did pretty decent business with over $350 million in the bank, so it shouldn't be surprising that after the fall of the Smurfs, Sony bets on red.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 is being made by Sony Pictures Imageworks in association with Rovio Entertainment and is slated to fly into theaters on September 20, 2019. The first film’s voice cast will reprise their respective roles, including Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses) as the temperamental Red, Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast, Frozen) as speedy Chuck, Bill Hader (Barry, Trainwreck) as Leonard, king of the pigs, Danny McBride (Vice Principals, This is the End) as the volatile Bomb, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, Avengers: Infinity War), as the legendary Mighty Eagle.
Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly won't return to helm the sequel as Thurop Van Orman (The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Adventure Time) and John Rice (King of the Hill, Rick and Morty) are taking over to direct the movie. Ice Age and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs writer Peter Ackerman is penning the script and John Cohen (Despicable Me, The Angry Birds Movie) is producing the animated film.
