Aquaman is already off to a swimming start in China, with box office reports indicating that James Wan's undersea adventure has amassed $1.19 million from Thursday night preview screenings.

This gives The King of Atlantis' first solo outing the second highest opening for a DCEU movie behind Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which took in $1.35 million from previews back in 2016.

If this is any indication of how well the film performs today, Forbes predicts that it could be in line for a $52 million opening weekend - although it will face tough competition from Venom.

Aquaman opens in North America on December 21.

UPDATE: Well, thanks to the timezone difference those Friday numbers are already in, and it's great news for the aquatic DC hero:

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

@L0RDbuckethead

I will for sure👍🏻 Going to be an interesting test for the gf. I don’t think we’ve ever seen an animated movie together...hoping she loves this one haha

@regularmovieguy - I'm sure she will. Gwen Stacy and Peni Parker are definitely great in the film (if she's worried about the female characters). They're all well-written.

@L0RDbuckethead

I think it's more of it being an animated movie-type deal than anything else. That would definitely be a welcome surprise for her, though.

She's never seen The Lego Movie either so I can't be like "it's the same guys, show some faith" etc. Haha I think she'll end up loving it.

“Directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa in the titular role, Aquaman looks set to exceed $60 million in its debut at the Chinese box office, which would be the biggest start to date for a DC title in the territory. ”
