Did the Avengers' version beat X-Men's?

Feature Opinion
By RobGrizzly - May 06, 2015 10:05 AM EST

It all started with a hint. Joss Whedon was considering using Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for his highly anticipated followup to the biggest comic book movie of all time. Weeks after he confirmed it, Bryan Singer revealed he'd be using Quicksilver in his highly anticipated return to the X-Men franchise. A line was drawn, shots were fired, and the race was on.

Mega-studios Marvel and Fox were both courting a character that had previously been unknown to the general public. Now he was the most sought after free agent of 2013. Some might say Fox's hasty casting of Quicksilver was a direct jab at Marvel, while others can argue he has just as much, perhaps even more of a right to be in an X-Men film than an Avengers one. A legal battle over rights insued, and in the end, with a decision that made us ALL winners, BOTH companies were allowed to use the speedster.

But not without some guidlines, of course. There can be no overlap, so X-Men could not mention Avengers 2 and Avengers could not refer to Maximoff as a mutant, or as Magneto's son. Fair enough. (Well not really- for comic book fans this was equal parts complicated, confusing, and annoying.) But the bottom line is, both movies were going to get to complete their visions.

***SPOILERS for X-MEN and AVENGERS 2***

So how did these versions turn out? Days of Future Past invisioned a kid that who's life around him just can't keep up. He steals for the fun/ease of it, and is commissioned to break Magneto out of a high security prison. What follows is perhaps the scene-stealing setpiece of the film, while also making a inside joke about Erik and Quicksilver's relationship. At the end, we see him cradeling his baby sister, and assumed Scarlet Witch.

Age of Ultron correctly makes Pietro and Wanda twins, and even with the backstory changed, the destruction of their home as children, which turned them into villains, still basically works, and is in line with some versions of the characters. No Magento needed. This Quicksilver is a little more henchman like, though; the muscle to get the job done. No standout scenes like the X-Men version, but he is in the movie much more, and has a fun rivalry with Hawkeye.

EVAN PETERS.Way better Quicksilver but nothing like the comic book. I really liked the way his power was portrayed on film. And I liked the way he was impatient and talked fast.

You might as well have asked who do you like more: Marvel or Fox?

As this is going to become a popularity contest, rather than an analytical, non-biased opinion.

I have a strong feeling some of you know much about Quicksilver... Like at all.

^^^ Why thank you MrCBM. Usually people make cynical comments like "I have a feeling you guys know nothing about this character." But here you are...seeing the best in all of us. Not assuming we're ignorant.

I have a strong feeling that comment is exactly how you intended to write it. That you didn't forget to put in the word "don't" before "know."

I'll say this.

I think AoU's Quicksilver felt like he belonged in Fox's X-Men movies and DOFP Quicksilver felt like he belonged in the MCU.

As awesome as that scene was, Evan's QS was just that, a scene, a plot device.
Aaron's was a real character, that (spoilers) sadly died too early.

I can't really decide, both were great in their own ways for very different reasons. In DOFP, it seemed more like a glorified/extended cameo but it was a really cool part of the film, and I really liked aspects of his personality (impatience, short attention span, etc.) which does align itself with his comic counterpart in some ways.

On the other hand, AOU's version had a much more fleshed out role, with a real character arc and development. He also displayed traits that weren't seen in DOFP but also align with the comic version (protective relationship with Wanda, misguided hatred toward someone who doesn't really deserve it, cockiness, wit). In that regard, AOU comes out on top because he's a more developed, rounded character - although X-Men Apocalypse may well develop DOFP's Quicksilver further.

Having said all that though, it still kind of feels like each version was only half of Quicksilver, and we've yet to see the full character on screen.

Quicksilver in Days of Future Past had a better story, the film had a better speed effect with him and he was so much more likable.

I found it fitting that Quicksilver died(or "died" I guess since N.E.R.D. when it comes to MCU).

Pietro is much better in Age Of Ultron (And he is not really over powered)

Peter on the other hand is obviously shoe horned into the plot. Anyone who doesn't see this is probably a cuck (:

Weird that so many people are under the illusion that the AoU version is better.
