AVENGERS: ENDGAME Director On Possibly Helming A DC Movie; Reaffirms Desire For A SECRET WARS Film

Now that the Russo Brothers are just about done with Avengers: Endgame, questions regarding their next project have begun to arise. Will it be a DC movie, or their dream project of The Secret Wars?

For over a year now, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have talked about their dream project of helming a Secret Wars movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the directors have previously indicated they will take a break from the superhero universe following Avengers: Endgame, Joe Russo reaffirmed that it would be the Secret Wars to draw them back to the MCU.

"I keep saying Secret Wars, cause that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid, was Secret Wars," Joe Russo said when asked by MTV News. "This notion of like, you know, event storytelling, and I think that’s part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films. The notion that like you can contain so many different characters, and so many different points of view, and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us."

As the directors have pointed out numerous times in the past, now that Disney has acquired Fox and the X-Men and Fantastic Four are back with Marvel Studios, a Secret Wars movie is entirely possible. However, given how far down the line Marvel plans these movies, this sort of ensemble blockbuster might not come to fruition for quite some time. If it did, though, you can bet it would be a way bigger cinematic event than anything we've seen in the MCU thus far. This would be a monumental undertaking, but if there are any directors who have proven capable of managing ensemble movies, it's the Russo brothers.

Beyond the MCU, the directors were asked if they would ever consider helming a DC Universe film. While they didn't jump at the idea of entering the ring with DC, they didn't exactly rule it out either.

"I mean, our brains are so fogged at this point that I don't know we can consider anything," Joe responded. "But, you know, you never say, 'never.'"

One Marvel director who didn't say no is James Gunn, who will be directing Suicide Squad. Gunn agreed to helm the DC film after he was let go by Disney for some inappropriate tweets that resurfaced online; however, realizing there was no one better visionary for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney and Marvel Studios recently announced that they would be bringing Gunn back on board. As a result, Gunn is now directing both Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy.
