Avengers: Endgame Officially Breaks Avatar’s Record in Initial Theatrical Run

Avatar now only stands above Avengers: Endgame due to it's re-release a year later, a record which Endgame will likely also break during its own re-release.

We’ve been hearing a lot about how Avengers: Endgame will be re-released in theaters this year, with six minutes of additional footage, in order to push it over the line and break Avatar’s all-time record of a $2.788 billion gross.

Now, if that may seem like cheating to some, it should be pointed out (and has been by many) that Avatar only attained that number due to its own re-release, Avatar: Special Edition, in 2010, which itself included 9 minutes of additional footage, and grossed an additional $33 million. In it’s original release, Avatar made an actual gross of $2,749,064,328. It's a fairly arguable point that this is all that should really count towards the record books anyway.

Well, today, Avengers: Endgame broke that record, having now taken in a total of 2,749,603,966.

Now that it’s beaten Avatar’s record in the initial theatrical run, it's a fairly safe assumption that it break it's record when including re-releases as well, when the new edition hits theaters later this year.
