AVENGERS: ENDGAME Writers Say Peggy Carter's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Husband Was Steve Rogers

Avengers: Endgame wrapped up with Steve Rogers choosing to remain in the past to live out his life with Peggy Carter and it's thought he returned to the main MCU timeline using the final batch of stolen Pym Particles. It's also been said that there were two versions of Cap at the same time but it just seems easier to assume that was in the main timeline rather that an alternate one.

Now, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have doubled down on their argument that the husband we learned Peggy Carter had in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was indeed Steve Rogers...why didn't the hero recognise himself? That's a question for another day!

"It depends on what story Marvel wants to tell going forward," McFeely said about their take on what happened. "I don’t know if Marvel wants to tell any more Captain America stories or if Chris [Evans] is up for it. Do they want to tell an alternate timeline story? Chris and I are partial to the idea that Steve is part of a strange, unique time-loop where he has always been there."

"The husband that you very purposefully did not see at Peggy’s bedside in Winter Soldier is Chris’ Steve," he continued. "We have always thought that he was her husband. The movies you have been watching follow a line where he always goes back. To be fair, not everyone agrees with us. I don’t even know if Marvel agrees with us. But that’s what we think."

Honestly, that's a much better theory than Steve being in a branching timeline and it's nice to think that the hero is living out that loop, getting the life he so desperately wanted in the first place.

An Awkward Goodbye For Thor And Valkyrie

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor leaves New Asgard in the capable hands of Valkyrie, but their farewell was originally going to play out quite a bit differently. According to Anthony Russo, she was going to put her arm on the God of Thunder's shoulder, something he would have misread as a sign to lean in and kiss her!

"[She] goes, 'What are you doing?' And he goes, 'Oh, I thought that the touch–', and she's like, 'It's a goodbye tap I'm giving you'. It was a really funny beat, but we cut it," he reveals.

This was actually shot, so there's a good chance it will make it on to the Blu-ray as a deleted scene. As funny as it would have been to see, it was clearly one joke too many for the movie's closing moments and it's thought that the MCU's Valkyrie is supposed to be gay.

Black Widow's New Job

Avengers: Endgame had a lengthy running time of three hours, but the Russo Brothers still had to cut a lot of content in order to tell the story they wanted. That included scrapping plans for Black Widow to be running an organisation based in Washington DC that would have seen her helping the orphans left behind by the snap.

In terms of character development, this obviously makes a lot of sense, especially as Natasha was also orphaned as a child. However, the filmmakers scrapped the idea early on and instead decided to have her leading the remaining Avengers. Had they had more time, though, this would have made a very interesting plot thread.

Iron Man Vs. Heimdall

It's hard to complain about the way this movie revisits the Marvel Cinematic Universe's past, but we missed out on what sounds like an amazing sequence. Apparently, early ideas for Avengers: Endgame had Iron Man and Thor travelling to Asgard in 2013 in order to retrieve both the Power and Space Stones.

During that adventure, Tony Stark would have donned a stealth suit and gone head to head with Heimdall (who would have been able to see the Armored Avenger thanks to his unique abilities).

Thor, meanwhile, would have spent a little more time with Jane Foster. None of this got past the scripting stages, so don't expect to see any of this when the Blu-ray is released a little later this year.

More Alternate Time Heists

For quite some time, Avengers: Endgame's writers shied away from heading back to the events of The Avengers and that meant they looked at other key moments in the MCU for ideas on where the team could go in order to get their hands on the Infinity Stones.

At one point, we were set to see them break in to S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a confrontation in the Sanctum Sanctorum with Doctor Strange, and some sort of underwater battle on Morag (which would have been a result of the team going too far back in time and getting to the planet long before Star-Lord did).

"Love You 3000"

Another very real possibility for the eventual home video release of Avengers: Endgame, it was recently revealed that 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford shots scenes for the movie as an older Morgan Stark. After Iron Man used the Infinity Stones, he would have visited that mysterious Soul realm where Thanos saw Gamora and got to interact with his daughter as a grown woman.

"What we realised about it was we didn't feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter," Anthony Russo explained. "So it wasn't ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level." It's a shame we didn't get to see this in the final cut of the film but you can see why casual moviegoers struggling with the concept of time-travel might have been confused.

Battlefield Reunions

Avengers: Endgame's final battle is massive, and you'd best believe that a lot of scenes were shot that sadly ended up on the cutting room floor. Among them were a series of reunions which saw Earth's Mightiest Heroes take a breather from the fight to catch up and attempt to formulate a plan.

"It didn’t play well, but we had a scene in a trench where, for reasons, the battle got paused for about three minutes and now there’s 18 people all going, ‘What are we going to do?’ ‘I’m going to do this.’ ‘I’m going to do this.’ Just bouncing around this completely fake, fraudulent scene," writer Stephen McFeely explained, expressing his regrets regarding reunions we didn't see.

Ultimately, you can see why they didn't want to have the action too bogged down in conversations such as this, but we'll hopefully get to see it in the form of some deleted scenes.

Returning To 2012

Once the filmmakers decided that they would return to the events of Avengers: Endgame, they then needed to figure out at what moment Earth's Mightiest Heroes would arrive in 2012.

Well, editor Jeff Ford recently revealed that things kicked off with Iron Man flying through the Leviathan, a scene that was shown to test audiences but once again proved to be too confusing.

That means this was shot and could easily find its way on to the Blu-ray. Another option was reportedly the moment The Hulk smashes Loki, but it sounds like that was also too late.

Hank Pym And Janet Van Dyne Join The Fight

According to the movie's writers, they did seriously consider having Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne join the fight on the battlefield but with so many other characters to think about, they ultimately decided to leave them on the sidelines which is a genuine shame.

There have been reports that had Robert Redford been unwilling to reprise his role as the villainous Alexander Pierce, Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders would have instead confronted Tony Stark as Nick Fury and Maria Hill in a bid to regain the Tesseract.

Smart Hulk's Lab Time

Avengers: Endgame's writers have revealed that there was a time when Bruce Banner was going to transform into Smart Hulk during Avengers: Infinity War's final battle in Wakanda. That ultimately changed, and when it came time to figure out how they would introduce this new version of the Jade Giant in the sequel, they struggled to find a way to make that happen.

Apparently, one possibility was to actually show the Green Goliath in his lab, figuring out how to combine his intelligence and strength. It doesn't sound like those scenes got past the scriptwriting stage, and they later decided to cut straight to his new persona in that diner while he tucked into breakfast alongside Captain America, Black Widow, Ant-Man, and some big fans!

Hawkeye's Sacrifice

Originally, it was going to be Hawkeye who sacrificed himself on Vormir in order to get the Soul Stone but the writers quickly realised that that was the wrong direction to take things in, especially after a number of women working on Avengers: Endgame expressed their disappointment with the idea to take such a big moment away from Black Widow.

Interestingly, the entire sequence was actually going to be very different, and the one we saw in theaters was a result of reshoots.

The original would have seen Thanos arriving on the planet to try and take the heroes out, with them then forced to try to fend off his soldiers while also battling each other to make that leap.

Seriously, you guys wrote the damn movie. If you wanted this to be the idea of Steve being Peggys husband all along you should have written the time travel rules to fit that logic. With the rules you've established sure it's a nice ending in general for the character and a nice idea. But in terms of the time travel rules YOU WROTE!! it doesn't work.

In fairness, he did offer the appropriate caveats. I don't mind people saying "I like this", and he even handwaves it as a unique special thing (which is romantic and all).

I doubt it will be addressed any time soon, if ever. This was intended as the end of Rogers' road, and leaving it vague and open to poetry is sort of the point. If they do circle around to it being a meaningful plot point, I do hope they make it explicit that he went to an alternate world (and kicked ass there for 70 years). I'd love to see the reality where Steve Rogers was President Captain America 4 Life.

Jeez, how many articles are we gonna get about this?! No, it's not "a much better theory than Steve being in a branching timeline", it's wrong by account of the very dialogue they themselves wrote into the movie explaining their own time travel mechanics.

In fact, considering that the writers were involved in the Agent Carter series, it's implied there that her husband was Agent Sousa, so it's pretty clear that they haven't been planning some magical infinite time loop for Steve.

He's in an alternate timeline. They don't agree? Fair enough, each to their own. Guess it's like that "ambiguous" ending to The Dark Knight Rises where people think Bruce might not have survived after all (he did) and that Alfred was dreaming when he saw him (he wasn't). The proof is all there when you actually pay attention, but whatever.

Is it a nice idea that Steve and Peggy will always be together no matter what? Sure, but that's not how time travel is said to work in Endgame so I don't know why they keep saying it.

It's just their own headcanon.

I don’t know why this is so hard for people to grasp. Steve travels back and creates a branching timeline where he lives as Peggy’s husband. That is the timeline we have viewing this entire time. That does not mean in that time line Steve wasnt also defrosted and joined the Avengers. In fact, knowing how things play out and that Thanos will eventually do what he does - it makes total sense for Steve to allow the events of his younger self to play out in the present. It’s not that [frick]ing hard to grasp. It STILL fits with the established rules!

I assumed that as soon as all of the stones were back in their proper timelines, the timeline would be corrected, and he could plant himself in the past without disrupting the timeline, for the most part.

Im doubling down on this theory as well. I agree there has always been 2 caps in our time line! Old cap went back and lived his life with peg after capsicle went down in the ice. Old cap couldn't interfere with the current timeline as it would branch off and mess up everything he knew about the future or what was to come. They could have easily have got a stand in for old cap or some face hologram shiz that black widow wore in winter soldier. Old cap was working in the shadows for shield/hydra stopping major threats that we as the public wouldn't know about (knowing it was hydra but knowing the good peeps) - until current cap was unfrozen. Then he walked to the spot where he gives up the shield to sam (why he didn't land on the timetravel pod). Boom - Marvel send my cheque!!
