Director James Cameron Hopes Audiences Will Get "Avenger Fatigue"; Compares AVATAR Sequels To THE GODFATHER

In a recent interview, Avatar director James Cameron admitted that he hopes to see audiences grow tired of films like the Avengers and commented on his own Avatar sequels. Hit the jump for more details...

Marvel Studios has been making films for the past decade, and when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters in just a few days, they will have made almost 20 superhero adventures. That’s a rather large amount of movies that grows even larger, especially when one adds it to the list of superhero films produced by other studios.

While the abundance of comic book-based projcts has given fans plenty of reasons to rejoice, James Cameron finds the quantity of films a bit concerning. Specifically, the director believes that by dominating the market, superhero and comic book films like Avengers are preventing other types of sci-fi stories from being told — though he does admit to being a fan:

“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”

Of course, the director didn’t just discuss superheros, as he also brought up his series of Avatar films. “I’ve found myself as a father of five starting to think about what would an ‘Avatar’ story be like if it was a family drama,” Cameron said, before revealing he is drawing influence from a specific element of a certain cinematic masterpiece. “What if it was ‘The Godfather’? It’s a generational family saga. That’s very different than the first film.”

The director then went on to further explain how much of a family saga the sequels can be. “What happens when warriors who are willing to go on suicide charges and leap off cliffs, what happens when they grow up and have their own kids? It becomes a very different story.”

That’s certainly an interesting bit of info on the future of the Avatar series, as up until this point there was nothing that suggested the films would be following different sets of characters, much less the children of those we've seen before. In all, it sounds a bit like Star Wars, which largely follows different generations of the Skywalker family.
