I'm pretty sure that's a picture of a fence through a fence. #FENCES

@Kr08 - he looked so angry when casey affleck won the oscar denzel was ready to turn into the hulk lol

@auditore - But Affleck deserved it more. Denzel delivered a great performance, but not as good as Affleck's in Manchester By The Sea.

I'm pretty sure that the Academy also took into account that Denzel has had 6 years to perfect his performance for Fences on stage. Viola won simply because the other performances were nowhere near her level. Gosling shouldn't have even been nominated. He gave a much better performance in Drive than he did in La La Land.

@Kr08 - people think loud acting automatically means the best.

People don't appreciate quiet acting like what Casey brought to the table.

@NoMeaning45 - EXACTLY! *said loudly

That police station scene alone in Manchester was far more powerful than Denzel's whole performance. Not only did it give me chills, but it damn near broke my heart watching that.

I think that Denzel's performance was spoiled due to him having done it on stage and the trailer giving away all the pivotal scenes. Less of an impact.

@Kr08 @NoMeaning45 - I'm in the camp that thinks La La Land was indeed the best film of the year, but Gosling wasn't exactly the best part of the film. He was much better in The Nice Guys this year.

However, I do think Denzel deserved the win. Yes, he's very loud and boisterous and intense in Fences. But watch the scene where he's confronting his son for the first time in the backyard. He's yelling at him with that tough guy persona, yeah. But look at his eyes. You can see pain. You can see the uncertainty behind the man's cold exterior. He was over-the-top in one aspect to subtly deliver another.

That, my friend, is brilliant [frick]ing acting.

@BillMurray - Affleck did that as well, but he did it better. Denzel was great, but even in his own Fences role he wasn't the best. James Earl Jones was far better than Denzel when he was taking on the role on stage.

For me, there were only 2 people that could've won: Casey Affleck and Dev Patel. Dev Patel was snubbed, and his performance was beyond that of Denzel's.

@BillMurray - all of that pain in the eyes, all of that silent horror, the subtle acting.

I found that double in Caseys performance.

Denzel was a close second, imo

@NoMeaning45 @Kr08 - I can't speak for Dev, because no theaters in my area were playing Lion.

The thing about Affleck... yes, he did fantastic. But he really only played that horror and subtly. Denzel juggled that and his character's larger-than-life element very well. The characters said it themselves. He was a shadow lurking on the walls. He was huge. Denzel was that force of nature they described. But in his weakest moments, he captured that fragile humanity we all have.

At the end of the day, this is somewhat objective. They were all really close.
