Marvel Television's Jeph Loeb Unsure Of How The Disney + Fox Merger Will Impact The TV Side Of Marvel

There's a lot of moving parts in the Disney and Fox merger. Where Marvel movies stream after theatrical runs and where television shows premiere are all being carefully weighed and calculated.

While the X-Men and Fantastic Four were barred from Marvel Studios, Marvel Television has worked with the Fox-owned Marvel properties for quite some time, with shows like The Gifted and Legion achieving relative levels of success.  So just precisely how the impending merger will affect the television side of Marvel remains to be seen.

Jeph Loeb, comic scribe turned Executive VP of Marvel Television, told CB at the TCA's that he's not quite sure himself.

"I have to wait for them to be resolved and I'm not trying ... You know me well enough to know that I usually go that's classified or any," said Loeb.

He continued, "We are literally waiting for two multi-billion dollar corporations to figure out how they're going to merge. And when that happens then they'll be a decision made as to where these characters land and what happens with them and that kind of thing...Like you know the thought that the X-Men and the Fantastic Four are coming home, in whatever format that turns out to be, is extraordinary you know. And I can't wait to see what the movie division does. I can't wait to see what we do. I can't wait to see what the gaming division [does]..."

How do you think the merger will impact the television side of Marvel?

Instead of X-Men and Avengers characters walled-off in their own universe, perhaps we'll see a show that has leads from both those corners of the Marvel universe.

It's really telling how much distanced Marvel Studios and Marvel TV are from each other, damn.

Loeb isn't really saying anything here that isn't already obvious (I think the more important info from the day this interview was published was that Loeb said he hopes there will be additional Marvel shows on FX after Legion ends. Cough cough Daredevil I hope...)

"How do you think the merger will impact the television side of Marvel?"

Its honestly too hard to say right now because the future of Marvel TV after 2020 is kind of uncertain right now. But on the TV side, I think any changes, any doors opened up by Marvel now having complete access (even though the TV division always had access) to mutants and other former Fox characters will be seen on Agents of SHIELD.

SHIELD tends to introduce and test out characters or races first in the MCU (i.e. Kree, Inhumans [yes lets forget there was ever an Inhumans show, its not in the MCU... ;-)], etc.). So I think that the idea of mutants will first be heavily played with on SHIELD; perhaps not in season 6 since that season has already finished filming and the Fox deal wasn't done yet, but season 7 could be a very good bet for first seeing the impact of the acquisition in the MCU.

Putting the TV shows in the same universe as the movies was always going to create some strange circumstances, but now having to balance that with a far more structurally integrated set of Television shows appears to be starting to really pull at the seams

I’m glad that ENDGAME stands as sort of a bold punctuation mark in the MCU, because if Marvel Studios somehow fumbles with the X-Men or the Fantastic Four, we’ll at least have a checkpoint to return to. Kind of like how ALIENS and TERMINATOR 2 serve as clean break-off points for people watching those series.

@NoAssemblyReqd - I don't think Marvel will fumble, but I do agree with you about Endgame serving as a checkpoint, and of how Aliens and Terminator 2 serve as checkpoints as well. No matter what happens/happened after those films, they will still be timeless.

You will basically lose your job jeph. And i hope your boss ike follows you. I think marvel has the best cb shows out there but that is more telling on how subpar most dc shows are.

Im getting really sick and tired of the non existent budgets and the grounded aesthetic that tries to present itself as a thoughtful crime drama. In reality they just dont have the budget required to pull those shows off.

Its the main reason i think the mcu disney shows will be game changing. Fewer episodes + 100 million for each of them.

@Jeight8 - If a certain leak is anything to go by, you're probably right.
