LOS ANGELES (AP) — Facebook fans are getting an early shot to see the all-star superhero tale "The Avengers."
Disney's Marvel Studios announced Monday that it will offer advance screenings around the world in cities where "The Avengers" has gained the most fans on Facebook.
Early screenings will start with shows in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston and Miami on April 14, nearly three weeks before the film's May 4 U.S. debut. Admission will be free, first-come, first-served.
Marvel plans another round of early screenings in five more cities. Fans can lobby for their city on "The Avengers" Facebook page.
"The Avengers" features Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johannson, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner.
UPDATE: This unprecedented screening event will enable Facebook fans of “Marvel’s The Avengers” in cities that have assembled the most fans on Facebook to win the first access to screenings of the film, weeks before the May 4 release in theatres. This event will kick off on April 14 at 10 a.m PT with the top five cities in the U.S. with the most fans on Facebook: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston and Miami. The next five cities to garner the most Facebook “Marvel’s The Avengers” fans will be awarded an early screening as well--to be announced shortly on Facebook. Participating fans are encouraged to celebrate this movie event by coming to their local screenings dressed in their finest super hero costumes inspired by “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the winners of the Best Costume contest will be awarded reserved seats.

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August 2011 and New York City in September 2011. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.
The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States in 2D and 3D.
