BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Surprises With A $65M Weekend; Nearing $500M Global

Yesterday's projections had The Dark Knight Rises set to pull in only $55 million in it's second weekend, but a strong Saturday has bumped up the numbers to a healthier $65M weekend.

The Dark Knight Rises only pulled in $18M domestically on Friday, but deadline is reporting that Saturday's take was forty-two percent higher with $25.6M.

Domestically the film has pulled in a hefty $290M through Sunday, making it the 3rd highest number for a movie's first 10 days in release. Second highest is The Dark Knight which during that same stretch totaled $313.7M, and Marvel's The Avengers is the champ with an astounding $373M. The Dark Knight Rises will now become the third fastest to reach $300M.

Globally The Dark Knight Rises is nearing a half a billion in its first 10 days. Fantastic numbers, but still not on pace with Nolan's previous Batman film. Most of this is due to the shooting incident in Aurora, Colorado as 20%-25% of domestic moviegoers were still hesitant about seeing the film.

The Dark Knight Rises grossed $27.4M in 57 overseas markets for Friday. That brings the international cume to $176.1M after opening in big-ticket countries like Mexico, Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Japan this weekend. Saturday’s and Sunday’s overseas tally is still to come today.

The Dark Knight Rises is now playing at your local theater. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

Can't wait to see it a third freakin time. My favorite movie of the year so far, and it will most likely be my favorite movie of the whole year by the time 2013 rolls around, just like Inception was my favorite of 2010, TDK of 2008, etc. etc.

I am someone who has been watching all the superhero films over the last 10 years, in fact i think the only one I chose to give a miss was "the Punisher" (but after watching it on tv im glad I did). I support all comic book adaptations and I think we are in a great period were hollywood finally respects the genre so gives it the attention and investment it deserves. But I can honestly say I have been left stunned by the attitude of some of the marvel fans on here. The proactive approach they have taken to trying to promote negativity around the dark knight rises is appalling. This was not the case with the avengers and most people hoped it would succeed so that those individual characters would get more movies. If everyone else had been proactively pushing negativity about marvel movies (of which there are a few coming so many chances to help fail) it wouldnt have been good for anybody not DC or marvel. The unnatural critical and commercial success of the dark knight pushed and cemented the perception of superhero flicks above the "just for kids" banner and made even stuffy critics who dismiss superhero movies as brain dead pop corn flicks to take notice and some suggested that heath ledger be nominated for an oscar for his portrayal of the joker, it meant Hollywood people realised that you could make a superhero film and really respect the source material and treat it with as much seriousness as other blockbusters and audiences would appreciate the fact its not silly or just about smashing things up. The great thing is that batman is propably the only character that could it make it work and the films have done just that. All comic book fans should be happy at how its been brought to life so well and that it has done so with so much success that batman is now regarded as the single most commercial character in Pop culture. A comic book.

one last thing- Nolanites as a term quite frankly is insulting, I thought the avengers was fun (mindless, but fun) it doesnt make me a "whedonite" i enjoyed the first two batman films in the late 80's and 90s it doesnt make a "burtonite" in fact he has made many films I dont like. Every time I read "Nolanite" i get a sense of jealousy that he didnt work his magic with the marvel brands. I think you guys should stop being lazy with your insults and just drop the term.

lastly the continued success of comic book movies is good for all of us, as it ultimately means studios invest more and that even more of our loved characters get the chance to go on the big screen. Support guys, no one wins when one of "our" movies doesnt.

Not bad... 500 reached in 10 days but with only 40% foreigin as usually. So domestically 225 the first week, 105-110 the 2nd, 50-55 the 3rd etc. It will take a couple of months from now to reach 450-470 (generous estimates), but then it will be really hard to continue. At that point, if there will be similar rates to those of TDK
(53,2%-46,8%), TDKR will not have yet reached 900 worldwide. I
hope it manage to reach the billion, cause is well worth,
but it won't be easy this time.

Marvelites. Nolanites.
Take this:

Avengers is great.
Rises is great.
Box-office revenue does not equate success to me.
I'd like Avengers just as much if it would have bombed, and I'd like Rises just as much if it were doing twice as well.
Ticket sales aren't tantamount to greatness.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - worldwide gross of $836,303,693...
The proof is right there.
As a Marvel comics and DC comics fan, Avengers and TDKR are two of the greatest movies I've ever seen. It's been a great year for CBM fans.
I wish we could all just celebrate this.

It's great that things are picking up. I went to see this today (well, yesterday, actually) and boy did this movie exhilarate the sh-t out of me. I'm watching it again tomorrow. Last movie I went to see more than once? (other than Avatar, but that was because I had to) The Dark Knight.

I think at this point the Nolanite/Marvelite/Whedonite ridiculousness is starting to wind down. Only a few people who absolutely insist on keeping it going are actually around these days. I'm not gonna say that anyone who identifies as one of these groups isn't a "real" fan, but I agree with what everyone else is saying: We should ALL be happy about good comic book movies regardless of which franchise/publisher we follow most.

I'm more a Marvel fan, but I am a big batman supporter. I speak a little French, but not enough to understand everything perfectly.
But I went to see the film in the french Swiss in order not to wait another month. The film is very good but not great. Give a judgment more thoroughly when I have seen with my own language. You can not understand what ridiculous is to hear bane in French looooooool

Man as much as I love Batman I still don't think rises was that great. It was a good movie but it was so predictable. Anyone with comic knowledge would have known Bane wasn't the one in the pit. I still hate Bane's voice, he speaks spanish, portugese, latin etc, not sean connory in a darth vader mask. BB and TDK are both better movies. I really want to praise and love this movie but I don't think is the "Movie of the year". That being said I still think it was a really good movie, it's just not as good as alot of people are trying to hype it up as. Avenger's has a slight edge I think.

Avengers is a better movie........... and no i am not Jizzing over the fact that TDKR isn't as great box office wise................ I honestly thought that TDKR would DOMINATE THE B.O.......... But here we are...........

MY OPINION ON TDKR/AVENGERS COMPARISONS

Story: TDKR
Comedy: Avengers
Action: Tie (CGI vs. Realistic makes it even)
Drama: TDKR
Meaning/Symbolism: TDKR
Fun-ness (HATE THIS term): Avengers
Conclusion: TDKR
COMIC ACCURACY (BASED ON STORIES FROM THE COMICS, NOT DESIGNS): TDKR
Villain: TDKR
Heroes: Tie
Romance: Neither, to be honest, they both kinda sucked at it. TDKR at least attempted it though.

So theres my judgment

@VegaKingBlade "Why are Nolanites pretending box
office doesn't matter now? Acting like it's just Marvel fans comparing
Avengers to Rises.
Have you blindly forgotten all the post just a couple weeks ago on here from Nolanites?" <--- you are very right, let's me to report some comment i've marked just for fun :-D

@KaLELnainotpyrKecnirP :
"JULY 20TH MARKS THE FALL OF THE AVENGERS AND MARVEL STUDIOS... ITS A DONE DEAL CALL IT A WRAP. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES WILL MAKE $215 MILLION DOLLARS OPENING WEEKEND.FACT!"

@robertneville: "@DoubleD - Only idiots keep repeating themselves. And you might have to eat your words come the weekend when
figures pick up again".

@Maximus: "The dark knight
came out 4 years ago without 3d and it made over 500 million domestic lol I garuantee it makes at least the same but probably more than that". "It will destroy spiderman for sure but it will be very close against the avengers
lol if it does beat it all this rivalry
nonsense will be over".
"don't worry the dark knight rises
will make quick work of the avengers lol I will laugh when it beats it's record"

@Nolanite: "This movie will outpace The avengers second and third weekend. Everyone I talk to are saying theyre gonna wait till
second or third weekend to go see it".
