Earlier this month, the Arkham Origins developer teased an upcoming project centred on the Court of Owls. Now we know exactly when to expect its release and it's a lot sooner than you would have thought...

While Rocksteady, the studio behind Batman: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight, is busy working on an upcoming mystery video game, it would appear that Arkham Origins developer WB Games Montreal has plans of their own. Earlier this month, they Tweeted an image of one of their employees wearing the logo of the Court of Owls, revealing that they were partnering on a project with a redacted development team. This of course led to immediate speculation that a sequel to 2013's Origins is in the works.

For the uninitiated, the Court of Owls are a secret cabal in the DC Universe that founded Gotham City and controlled it from the shadows for centuries, serving as enemies to Batman ever since revealing themselves in the 2011 storyline Night of the Owls. They quickly became fan favourites, already leaving a strong mark on the Batman mythos compared to other contemporary Bat-foes.

Now, thanks to a couple of follow up teases, we know exactly when to expect this project (or a reveal, at the very least). In fact, it could be as early as 2019.

It's no surprise that they would be selected as the main antagonists in an Arkham Origins continuation, given that the game itself included a few Easter Eggs directly hinting at the Court's influence:

With Rocksteady having retired from the Batman franchise after Arkham Knight, it makes sense for WB Montreal to pick up the reigns, even if there was a consensus that Origins was subpar to the work that Rocksteady had previously done. The game largely reused the Arkham City assets and mechanics, with a story focusing on Batman's first encounter with the Joker. It showed how the supervillains took over the criminal underworld as mob bosses faded out, which prompted the opening of Arkham Asylum. Its campanion game Arkham Origins: Blackgate (released on the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Vita) elaborated on the after credits scene, showing the origin of the Suicide Squad and setting up Batman: Assault on Arkham.

I'm down for more Arkham style games. Though I hate the sneaking around in those games, city ass near perfect.

League of Assassins > Black Glove > Court of Owls

Still...one of the few good things Snyder managed to pull in all these years writing the character of Batman.

I'd love to see some OG Dynamic Duo action.

Please WB Games, you're my only hope.

@KurtCrawler -
My personal ranking is:
1. City
2. Asylum

And then several pegs below them are Origins, Origins Blackgate, and Knight, although neither of them were particularly bad. All three had a huge set of pros and cons.

Bring it! Origins had a great story despite some shaky gameplay.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - only thing that brought Origins down for me really were the bugs and some gameplay elements that could be fixed. But it’s a solid game and has my favorite story out of all of the Arkham games. Hell has one of my favorite moments period

This might not be a good. WB Montreal is a HORRIBLE game studio.

These are the guys who refused to fix legitimate bugs and game breaking glitch's in Origin so they could pump out DLC and turned Shadow of War 2 into a lootbox focused pay to win system.
While they don't get as much attention as companies like EA and Activation they often pull crap that is just as bad.

@shadowspider9 -
I agree that Arkham Origins had a lot of problems, and isn't as good as a lot of people say it is (or as bad as other people say it is).

However, EA is pretty much the king of lootboxes and stuff. I didn't even buy Battlefront II when I heard about that crap, because I felt so ripped off at how incomplete the first one was. I've heard a lot of similar criticisms for the Battlefield series from friends of mine, which is why I haven't really gotten into those.

Still, if WB Montreal can improve upon Arkham Knight with a tankless Batmobile that isn't overused, taller buildings, a well-designed bigger city, a solid story that does the Court of Owls justice (the Arkham Origins story felt like fan fiction, especially with that awful Black Mask twist), better side missions, new mechanics that aren't clones of the previous games, less glitches, ETC, I'm all for it.

That being said, we're probably not getting a Batman game as good as Arkham Asylum and Arkham City any time soon. Those were bonified masterpieces and the two greatest superhero games ever made.

@Darkknight2149 - The truly sad part is that Wb Montreal is capable of making amazing and actually complete games. But they are undercut by executives who are as obsessed with nickel and dimming customers as EA and Activision.

There was an article a while back and where someone asked when they would patch Origins bugs, which for most users were minor but for some users were game breaking, and they responded they couldn't because they were to busy making the first DLC pack.
Then there is Shadow of War Mordor and it's horrible pay to win lootbox system.

The game itself will likely be a very good and complete game. But it's also highly likely it will have horrible predatory practices bolted onto it.
