The world in ruins. Batman carrying a severed Joker head in a lantern, Wonder Woman with a mohawk, and angry Green Lantern babies? Yup, it's the swan song of the Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo partnership.

What started with the Court of Owls way back in 2011 is finally set to be wrapped up this May in what will be Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's final Batman saga together.

Fans are calling The Last Knight a cross between Samurai Jack and Old Man Logan as the story focuses on The Dark Knight suddenly waking up as an inmate o Arkham Asylum to a world eerily reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road.  A world where he was never Batman, which resulted in the world turning out very, very wrong.

To hype the series, DC has released a trailer for the Black Label miniseries, which hits digital and comic book shops on May 29.

Bruce Wayne wakes up in Arkham Asylum. Young. Sane.

And...he was never Batman.

So begins this sprawling tale of the Dark Knight as he embarks on a quest through a devastated DC landscape featuring a massive cast of familiar faces from the DC Universe. As he tries to piece together the mystery of his past, he must unravel the cause of this terrible future and track down the unspeakable force that destroyed the world as he knew it…

From the powerhouse creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, the team that reinvented Batman from the emotional depths of “Court of Owls” to the bombastic power of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, DC Black Label is proud to present the bimonthly, three-issue miniseries BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH, published at DC’s standard comic trim size.

This could be the last Batman story ever told…

batman-severed-joker-head

It seems Batman will escape the confines of Arkham Asylum and will be wandering the desolate landscape of this nightmarish DC Universe. Some fans are joking that this is what Zack Snyder wanted to bring to the DC Universe.
green-lantern-baby-constructs

It seems Green Lantern power rings may have enslaved humanity as The Dark Knight has to avoid angry giant babies to continue his journey. How exactly did the DC Universe become this way and how will Batman undo this travesty?
superman-saves-batman-again

It seems Superman will still be around to save the day. Or is this a flashback? Some comic book fans are theorizing that Batman somehow kills Superman, which results in a radically different future.
superman-clones

If Superman's death truly is the catalyst for this "Knightmare" version of the DC world, it looks as if somehow attempted to replace him with a series of clones.
wonder-woman

Wonder Woman is present in this version of the DC Universe, though her look is radically different. And in the preview below, it's revealed that her new mohawk might actually be to accommodate wearing Doctor's Fate's Helmet of Nabu, which she possesses.

This appears to be a scene from the first issue of the miniseries, where Batman attempts to convince Alfred that he wouldn't have all his various skills if he's been a lifelong resident of Arkham. However, Alfred explains that various inmates have trained him, including alternate versions of Hush and Ra's al Ghul.

The miniseries will retail for $5.99, with each issue consisting of 48-pages of story. DC's Black Label imprint will be releasing each issue in the prestige format (hard stock cover, premiere paper and printing).

Why is the Joker's head in a lantern and how does that factor into the story? Another prevailing theory about the tale is that it's another version of the Emperor Joker storyline, where Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime steals 99% of Mr. Mxyzptlk's powers and rewrites reality.

Amazon's exist in this strange new world and this particular group is made of Supergirl, Poison Ivy, Donna Troy and Vixen. It looks like their base of operations is the Batcave.

6

While the previous group of heroes don't recognize Bruce, Wonder Woman does. Perhaps it's because she possesses the Helmet of Nabu, which allowed her to resists whatever power reset reality, though she informs Batman that the magical artifact is now powerless.

I'd like to think this WON'T be the last time Snyder and Capullo do Batman together. I want more.

Anything Snyder touches turns to gold. I started his Swamp thing run today and it’s so good.

Can’t wait for this and to see what he works on next (hopefully with Capullo in tow)

Anyone think Scarecrow or Mad Hatter are responsible for this future "reality"?
