We know Denis Villeneuve is not a huge fan of Marvel movies, but it turns out there is one comic book superhero the Dune director might be interested in developing for the big screen: The Batman.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve recently threw some shade at the superhero movie genre by stating that “there are too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others,” but it seems there is one - and only one - comic book hero the filmmaker might be interested in developing for the big screen.

Before Matt Reeves signed on to helm The Batman, Villeneuve was rumored to be in contention to land the gig, and Josh Horowitz asked the director about those reports while speaking to him during the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Denis said he couldn't actually recall if he'd been offered the chance to helm the project (he thinks he'd have been too immersed in Dune at the time, anyway), before revealing that the Dark Knight is the "only [superhero]" he can relate to.

Of course, Reeves has taken charge of the current incarnation of Batman, but there's nothing to say Villeneuve couldn't come on board for a sequel or spinoff. The director names Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum as one of the stories he most enjoyed, and there's already some buzz online about the prospect of him helming a live-action Batman Beyond adaptation.

Villeneuve will (hopefully) be too busy with Dune Part 2 to even think about the Caped Crusader for the foreseeable, but would you guys be interested in seeing the acclaimed filmmaker's take on the iconic vigilante some day?

Company man trying to get his sequel green lit

I understand his frustrations

He has to wait to see how Dune does before WB goes ahead with part 2

While Feige has 20 movies in the next 5 years green lit

@regularmovieguy - begs the question... which is his worst movie?

@Itwasme

I still have yet to see one movie of his that’s name is escaping me right now but Enemy is at the bottom of my Villenueve list.

I deleted the original comment because it was hyperbolic. I think the top 5-10% of CBMs are pretty [frick]ing great.

@regularmovieguy - I assumed it was hyperbolic, but you're right people are the absolute worst at dealing with hyperbole online.

I don't think I've seen Enemy, I'll check it out.

Very good movie that warrants a rewatch. Kind of had my head spinning the first time I saw it but it’s a cool. Jake Gyllenhaal in a dual performance (which is also very good).

That's so DEEP.

@SKetCH - if thats as far as your understanding of the character goes, i can see why you could think that way, but as a psychologist myself I find him very interesting and complex. You just need the right person to translate that to the screen.

@DarkDetective - No, not my understanding. I actually do a lot of critical thinking on characters in pop culture and have taken classes diving deep into the psyche of fictional characters throughout TV, cinema, novels, games, and comics.

This was fun being poked at Villeneuve, as I assumed - for fun - that he relates to Batman on a surface level, akin to most millennial & gen-z girls' fascination with Harley Quinn's relationship with the Joker.
