Director Matt Reeves has announced, via Twitter, that Golden Globe-nominated actor Peter Sarsgaard (Green Lantern; The Magnificent Seven) has joined the cast of Warner Bros.' highly anticipated The Batman in a mystery role, which The Hollywood Reporter believes is that of a corrupt cop or district attorney.

Further details are currently unavailable, but considering the prominent villain role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face - who is well known for serving as Gotham City's DA - was widely believed to be one of the last major roles left to be cast, it seems increasingly likely that Sarsgaard has landed the highly coveted part.

Sarsgaard joins an all-star cast headlined by Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse), who is starring as the titular Dark Knight, and also features Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Commissioner James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Andy Serkis (Black Panther) as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, newcomer Jayme Lawson in an undisclosed role and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone.

Plot details are being kept locked away at Arkham Asylum for now, but the film is rumored to be a loose adaptation of the popular DC Comics Batman story The Long Halloween.

Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin (Little Fish). Production is expected to commence at the end of 2019 or early 2020.

The Batman hits theaters June 25, 2021.

Great actor

Random: A friend of mine went to Wesleyan University and Sarsgaard and Maggie Gylenhaal were speaking at a film symposium there 3 years ago. He is without a doubt one of the douchiest dudes I've ever heard speak. He has a VERY HIGH OPINION of himself.

There’s a scene in ‘Black Mass’ I thought he was just so subtlety amazing in. When Depp tells him to “take the bag”. Peter is just firing at all cylinders with subtle facial ticks and subtext. Loved that scene and his role in that film.

@DrDafoe - damn, this would be a good take. Hadn't even thought of Hugo Strange. Also, I was just realizing we still hadn't even gotten a Collin Ferrel Penguin confirmation yet.

@maxx - i low-key think that the reason for that is because Ferrel is actually Dent.
