With the excitement surrounding Birds of Prey and Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn for the first time in four years, it’s easy to forget Harley was created by writer Paul Dini nearly three decades ago.

At the time, he had been one of the writers working to bring Batman: The Animated Series to life, and in his attempt to do something different with the Joker, he gradually came up with the idea for Harley Quinn. Now Dini is appearing on the Voices From Krypton podcast, just as enthused for Birds of Prey as everybody else.

Over the course of this conversation he reflects on how Harley came into existence in the first place, why she managed to connect with the audience in the way that she has and how she’s changed over the years. Also, as a writer who has spent much of his time working with pre-existing characters, he seems genuinely enthusiastic about the way Harley has been brought forward by different writers, though he makes it clear that she’s never really too far away from him.

Harley Quinn has been great so far. I die laughing every week. Hope it stays around for a long time.

@zachman2013 - They made 26 episodes, so season 2 is pretty much in the can.

@zachman2013 - Amen. They could shitcan the entire DCEU production slate and just make $500M worth of the HQ cartoon.

Eh, for my money, nobody’s done the character better than Dini.

Shout-out to Arleen Sorkin! Her unique voice & vocal performances, was crucial to Harley Quinn's popularity.

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - There's a reference to her in the movie, one of the TVs plays her soap opera appearance that inspired Harley Quinn

Paul Dini and Bruce Timm are legends. Instead of twisting existing characters to fit their vision they created of DC’s most popular characters out of nothing. The good standard of improving the source material and being true creators.

@TheUnworthyThor - Good point. They elevated the source material instead of "deconstructing" it.

@TheUnworthyThor - Are we talking about the same Bruce Timm who can't seem to keep Bruce's cock out of Barbara Gordon's vagina?

@GhostofCipher - Well, the point was whether either of the duo were twisting characters to fit their vision. Timm keeps trying to pair Batgirl and Batman when such a coupling makes zero sense for the characters.

@Battabing - love the polar opposites in decorum with your uses if cock & vagina.

@Battabing - That’s not even close to completely changing a character. That’s two very recognizable versions of characters that are doing something that you think is a little out of character. It’s like night and day from what I’m talking about.

@TheUnworthyThor - Well, what are you talking about, then, because Dini and Timm did their take on Batman, which is different from Miller's take, which is different from Snyder's take, which is different from Kane's take on the character.
At DC the multiverse exists, which means all versions are somewhat valid.

But, given the Timmverse, I find it very odd that Dick Grayson's "dad" started dicking one of his great loves.

@Battabing - All those takes are incredibly similar, all exploring the same motifs, themes, and motivations with similar looks and apparel. None of those are a wholesale recreation of the character.

Well, you still haven't said what it is you're referring to.

@Battabing - We just had a movie turn the mute daughter of two assassins, deprived of human contact, trained to be a killer from birth into a foul mouthed pickpocket for no reason when the character could have been named anything under the sun.

Paul is the greatest, along with everyone else that worked on the animated universe. Bring back Justice League Action! It had Alan Burnett's, Paul Dini's, Jim Krieg's, and Butch Lukic's love written all over it. Much like The Brave and the Bold, it was comedy-drama that worked. It truly felt like a continuation of JLU of sorts.

All I know is that Dini and Timm must be raking in the cash. The creator of El Diablo from the first Suicide Squad movie said he got a check from DC that allowed him to buy a new house; for [frick]ing El Diablo!

I can't even imagine what they're dropping in Dini's and Timm's bank accounts.

Slow news day, apparently.

Deadline has "Birds of Prey" coming in way under the $50m+ tracking in an article titled "‘Birds Of Prey’ Not OK With $33M+ Opening"

@Chewtoy - “ It’s a lazy R movie full of F bombs, and it feels in its bones like a PG-13 movie, especially coming off Suicide Squad. It’s not edgy, ultraviolent and genre pushing like Deadpool, Logan, Joker, heck, even Watchmen. And by making this movie R, the studio has potentially sidelined the younger female skewing Harley Quinn fanbase (and there’s plenty from the cartoon series, not just Suicide Squad).”

Hmmmm. I didn’t really think about that. I mean I’m a million years old, I don’t always really pay attention to ratings, but yeah now that I think about it, “Birds of Prey” really didn’t make much use of that R rating. It seems like it could have easily been PG-13 with the story they wanted to tell. (Also an actual Birds of Prey movie should always have been PG-13.
